Some evacuation orders, alerts linked to Vancouver Island wildfire lifted
PORT ALBERNI — Some of the evacuation orders and alerts linked to the Mount Underwood wildfire on Vancouver Island have been lifted or downgraded, as firefighters report 'minimal' behaviour from the blaze.
The Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, the City of Port Alberni and the Tseshaht First Nation jointly issued an update at 8 a.m. saying evacuation orders are lifted for the China Creek Campground and Headquarters Bay, which remain on evacuation alert.
The update also says that the City of Port Alberni and the Tseshaht First Nation's reserves are no longer under alert.
The Cowichan Valley Regional District says it has also rescinded an evacuation order for a number of properties, noting that 'the threat to life and safety has passed.'
The main road access to Bamfield, B.C., remains closed for a stretch between the community and Port Alberni.
The BC Wildfire Service says significant rainfall in the area over the weekend helped reduce fire behaviour at Mount Underwood, and another 8 millimetres of rain fell on the blaze on Tuesday.
The fire is still listed as out of control, but the service says the fire is not expected to grow beyond its 36-square-kilometres size.
There are about 60 active wildfires burning across B.C., with only one started in the last 24 hours while 55 have been declared out in the last week.

Wildfire near Port Alberni, B.C., that triggered evacuation orders being held

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Chad Hipolito PORT ALBERNI — A Vancouver Island blaze near Port Alberni, B.C., that triggered several evacuation orders last week is now classified as being held. The BC Wildfire Service dashboard says the fire, about 35 square kilometres in size, is projected to remain within its current perimeter. The fire had shown aggressive, intense behaviour in its first few days before being tempered by significant rainfall over the weekend. Some evacuation orders and alerts were downgraded Wednesday by the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District, the City of Port Alberni and the Tseshaht First Nation. However, nearby Bamfield continues to be without power and its main road access. BC Hydro has said that it's aiming to have power restored for Aug. 30, as a six-kilometre span of power infrastructure was destroyed and must be rebuilt. There were four new wildland fires confirmed in the Northeast Region by the evening of Aug. 20, Ontario Forest Fires reported late Wednesday. The updated fire map showed the status of the fires in the area Thursday morning. Sudbury 36 was discovered Wednesday evening. It's a 0.3-hectare fire located north of Espanola and southeast of Greater Sudbury. It is now under control. Sudbury 35 is 0.1 hectares in size and is also now under control. The fire is located on the north shore of Long Lake, southwest of Greater Sudbury. North Bay 11 is 0.1 hectares and located on the southern shore of Diamond Lake in the Temagami area. This fire is not under control. North Bay 10 was a 0.2-hectare fire located on the eastern shore of Anima Nipissing Lake. This fire is now out.
