That was the case for one woman, 24, who spoke exclusively to DailyMail.com about how she made a shocking discovery about her boyfriend after his passing that turned her whole world upside down.
The woman asked to keep her identity private so she will be referred to as the pseudonym Kate throughout the story.
Kate explained that she met her boyfriend through a website for furries: enthusiasts for humans who dress up like animals.
They became close immediately, bonding over their shared love of the phenomenon, which has grown in popularity in recent years.
They were friends for three years before they started dating in 2021, and Kate believed she had found her soulmate.
But their happy love story was sadly cut short when he was diagnosed with a terminal disease a year into their romance.
And after nearly two years of battling the illness, he recently passed away.
Following his tragic death, Kate began clearing out his old devices... when she came across something devastating on his laptop.
It turns out, the man she had loved had a secret and disturbing fascination that went way beyond their innocent involvement in the furry fandom.
She found tons of saved pages containing zoophile material, which is a term used to describe a person who is sexually attracted to animals.
While she didn't divulge any more information on the content she saw, she admitted that it left her pretty shaken up.
While chatting with DailyMail.com about the horrific discovery, Kate said she's trying not to let it 'get in the way of her mourning.'
She explained that she has no plans to tell anyone else about what she found because she doesn't want to 'damage' his legacy.
'Even though he has passed it would still be a betrayal of his trust,' she said. 'Whether right or wrong, him watching the material has never hurt anyone.
'It would be damaging to both him and me to reveal such a thing too since some people would probably think I'm lying when I have no reason to.'
She said she believes her late boyfriend wasn't a longtime zoophile, and theorized that he looked at the material because he knew he was dying.
'There was no signs or anything [before], that's why I think it was more like, "I'm doomed anyway so let's check this thing out,"' she said.
Kate also spoke about the ordeal on Reddit, admitting in an unflinchingly honest post, 'I don't even know how to feel about it.
'I can't feel mad about it. I'm too emotionally exhausted from everything, from his passing to all the arrangements that have to be made to feel anything,' she added.
'This is the person who was most important to me, gave me unconditional love, and who I helped to keep alive through my own care throughout last year and a bit beyond. It's more just a bit of a shock.
'You think you know someone inside and out but there is always something that ends up ready to surprise you.'

That painting was by Sarah Boardman, a British artist, who after being commissioned for the piece in 2018 described it as showing the president with a 'serious, thoughtful, non-confontational' expression. But Mr Trump called it 'truly the worst'. 'Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves, but the one in Colorado… was purposefully distorted to a level that even I, perhaps, have never seen before,' he wrote on his Truth Social platform. 'The artist also did President Obama, and he looks wonderful, but the one on me is truly the worst. She must have lost her talent as she got older. The fourth week of Diddy 's infamous sex trafficking trial kicked off with a bang as his former assistant took the stand and more A-list celebrities were named - only to face a relentless cross-examination by the disgraced mogul's attorney, Brian Steel. Hollywood heavyweights like Mick Jagger, Leonardo DiCaprio and Madonna were pulled into the spotlight as Diddy's legal team sifted through a trove of text messages between the disgraced rap mogul and his former assistant, aggressively questioning her about past employers and connections. 'Mia', a former personal assistant to the hip hop mogul, even revealed that she was once propositioned by the Rolling Stones singer while in Paris but 'ran away'. Asked why Mia didn't raise concerns about Diddy or speak out earlier, she claimed to have been 'brainwashed' by him. The jury was shown Mia's resume which explained how she handled all 'unique requests' for Myers, who starred in the film Wayne's World. The resume read: 'E.g. set up a private and confidential tour of the CIA by corresponding with Secret Service agents and government officials.' According to reports from 2009, Myers addressed several hundred CIA officers and paid tribute to his mother who was in the British Royal Air Force in WWII.

'The biggest misconception right now is I either paid for a pardon or slept for a pardon,' Savannah told press. 'If people knew the countless hours, the money, and the time that I spent doing to [Washington] DC, with not a meeting scheduled, and got on a plane and said, 'I'm going to be in the right room at the right time and meet the right people.'' She continued: 'I have fought hard and I was exhausted and I begged for meetings. 'I was never too good to ask and that's the thing.
