MoS Tamta calls for innovation-led road planning to boost economic growth

Hans India04-07-2025
New Delhi: Minister of State (MoS) for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta in a meeting with experts from IIT Delhi, School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi, and industry partners on Friday, emphasised that the future of India's infrastructure lies in innovation-led, safety-integrated, and context-sensitive road planning.
He called for a paradigm shift from reactive construction to proactive, innovation-led planning, where road projects are no longer isolated engineering exercises, but integrated, multi-sectoral development tools.
MoS Tamta highlighted that under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'Viksit Bharat 2047', infrastructure will play a defining role in making India a developed nation.
"The Ministry is not just building roads, but shaping corridors that serve as engines of industrial growth, urban expansion, digital connectivity, and citizen well-being," he remarked
MoS Tamta interacted with faculty and innovators from IIT Delhi and SPA Delhi, and the Minister stressed that these innovations not only improve safety but also tackle chronic issues in road projects such as land acquisition challenges, urban traffic congestion, poor last-mile connectivity, and cost overruns.
The Minister emphasised the need to indigenise design models, rather than replicating from the West. India's unique geography, climate, behavioural patterns, and population density demand customised solutions, including integrated safety zones, mobility hubs, and mixed-use road corridors.
The event showcased not only road safety solutions but also pioneering technologies, advanced planning frameworks, and low-cost, high-impact designs that can transform the way roads are conceived and constructed in India.
The minister also reviewed multi-directional free traffic models, hotspot-based safety designs, and door-to-door mobility systems for low-cost, high-efficiency public transit using a no-app-no-URL ( PiFi - Private Internet Fidelity) based transport system suitable for rapid urban transportation.
MoS Tamta advocated a governance model where physical plans are invited and evaluated transparently before DPR formulation, allowing a clear pathway to implementation.
He reiterated that innovation must be the cornerstone of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' future planning strategy and highlighted the role of Centres of Excellence (CoEs) as incubators for such cross-disciplinary ideas.
He applauded IIT Delhi and SPA Delhi for leading this movement and called upon other academic and industry institutions to join in this mission of nation-building through intelligent infrastructure.

Private companies may soon join India's nuclear sector, govt working on special code, may bring changes in key laws to... The Indian government is thinking about allowing private companies to take part in the nuclear energy sector. Right now, only government-owned companies are allowed to work in this field. To make this possible, the government may change some existing laws or bring in a new law. According to various media reports, the government wants to give a chance to private companies that are already established and have experience in handling big projects. They will also check if these companies are financially strong and stable before allowing them to enter the nuclear energy sector. Government may change the law in nuclear energy sector To allow private companies to actively take part in the nuclear energy sector, the government had proposed changes to two important laws in the Budget: Atomic Energy Act Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act The Civil Liability Act was made to ensure there is protection and proper compensation in case of a nuclear accident. Earlier, private companies were worried about having to pay compensation if any accident happened. Because of this fear, they stayed away from investing in nuclear projects. Now, as per reports, the government is planning to change both these laws so that private companies feel safe and confident to invest and work in the nuclear energy field. Steps being taken under 'Viksit Bharat 2047' The government will evaluate private companies before allowing them to work in the nuclear energy sector. This evaluation will be done either by the government itself or by an agency appointed by the government. The evaluation will check things like: The company's financial strength Technical ability Work experience Past performance and safety records This step is part of India's larger vision under the 'Viksit Bharat 2047' (Developed India 2047) mission. Currently, India has 23 nuclear power plants that produce about 8.8 gigawatts of electricity. These are all owned and run by the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). The government aims to increase this to 22 gigawatts by 2032, and further to 100 gigawatts by 2047. Bringing in private companies is seen as a way to help speed up growth and meet these big targets on time.

Requests for feedback submission will soon go out to all central ministries, autonomous bodies as well as state governments, officials at the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in October 2023, the first IndiaAI report had laid out the full fulcrum of India's AI aspirations, with detailed inputs from seven working groups. These had recommended the setting up of 3 AI centres of excellence, development of large, multimodal AI foundation models trained on Indian languages and datasets, and driving cross-sector development in areas like health, agriculture, education and governance through AI."The previous report had laid out the foundational strategy and roadmap for India's national approach to artificial intelligence. The next one is planned to build on it to further fine tune targets to meet the goals under the Viksit Bharat 2047 initiative," an official the approval of the IndiaAI Mission, the government had allocated Rs 10,300 crore over five years beginning March 2024 to strengthen AI capabilities. The upcoming report may call for augmenting that amount considering the central position that AI has acquired in innovation and governance since then, he government wants solutions to emerge for large-scale re-skilling of the technological workforce, much of which in India's IT industry remains anxious of retrenchments due to AI. Similar to last time, senior executives from the private sector and academicians are expected to be part of the working groups that will give recommendations for the computing power would also be a key focus, people in the know said. While the government had initially targeted the development of a high-end common computing facility equipped with 10,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), India has successfully overshot the mark by empanelling 34,333 GPUs through the IndiaAI Compute platform . But the government is wary of export controls on critical hardware being placed by foreign governments, specifically the the previous Joe Biden administration's Artificial Intelligence Diffusion Framework, the US had placed India among Tier-2 countries with a volume cap of 50,000 H100-equivalent GPUs through 2027. Under Donald Trump, US' new AI policy has called for exporting the full US AI technology stack to 'allied nations' willing to join America's AI alliance, but also stresses on denying foreign adversaries access to US compute power citing geostrategic competition and national security. These two categories are not defined, and India would need to quickly find its feet, an official said."This and other geopolitical challenges such as the rapidly evolving AI power dynamics beyond nations have pushed the government to hold the summit in India next year,' this official said. 'It will build on the 2025 AI Action Summit in Paris co-chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It will showcase India's emerging leadership in creating consensus for global AI governance frameworks ."
