The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Tuesday forecast a fresh spell of widespread rain, wind, and thundershowers across most parts of the country in the coming days, with monsoon activity expected to intensify from August 17.
According to the Met Office, monsoon currents from the Arabian Sea are continuously penetrating the upper parts of the country, while moist currents from the Bay of Bengal are likely to strengthen midweek. A westerly wave affecting the region is also expected to intensify from August 17.
Under these conditions, rain, wind, and thundershowers with scattered heavy falls are expected in Islamabad, Kashmir, upper Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), and Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) from August 14 to 17. The wet spell will persist from August 18 to 21 in several northern areas, including Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, and districts of G-B. From August 18 to 21, widespread rains are expected in K-P, with heavy to very heavy falls likely in Dir, Swat, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Peshawar, and Mardan. Southern districts — Bannu, Lakki Marwat, Waziristan, Tank, and Dera Ismail Khan — will also experience showers with occasional heavy spells.
Punjab, including Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, and Faisalabad, is likely to receive heavy rains from August 18 to 21, with scattered activity in southern districts, according to the PMD.
Parts of Balochistan, including Barkhan, Zhob, Khuzdar, Gwadar, and Panjgur, as well as several Sindh districts such as Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Larkana, and Tharparkar, are also expected to see showers between August 18 and 22.
GLOF alert
In view of the forecast, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of K-P issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) alert, warning of possible flooding in glaciated areas of the province. The PDMA cautioned that heavy and intermittent rains could cause glacial lakes to burst in vulnerable northern districts, including Upper and Lower Chitral, Dir, Swat, and Upper Kohistan.
The PDMA has also warned of landslides and flash floods in local streams and nullahs in these areas, advising the public to avoid unnecessary movement near water channels and to refrain from driving vehicles through fast-flowing streams.
The National Highway Authority (NHA), Frontier Works Organisation (FWO), and the Communication and Works Department have been instructed to remain on standby for road clearance and other emergency measures.
The PDMA has also launched a public awareness campaign to inform residents about precautionary measures, while its Emergency Operation Centre remains fully operational. Citizens can report incidents or seek information through the helpline 1700.
Flooding and landslides risk
The PMD cautioned that heavy rains may trigger flash floods in K-P, Murree, Galliyat, northeast Punjab, and Kashmir from August 15 to 21, as well as hill torrents in Dera Ghazi Khan and eastern Balochistan from August 18 to 21. Urban flooding is anticipated in low-lying areas of Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Peshawar, and Nowshera during this period.
Landslides and mudslides may disrupt roads in hilly areas of K-P, Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree, Galliyat, and Kashmir, while heavy falls, windstorms, and lightning could damage weak structures, electric poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels.
'All concerned are advised to remain alert and take necessary measures to avoid any untoward situation,' the PMD said. The public, travellers, and tourists have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel to vulnerable areas and remain updated on the latest weather conditions.
Death toll rises
At least 312 people, including 142 children, have died and 740 others have been injured in flash floods and torrential rains since late June, according to updated data from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The fatalities include 113 men, 57 women, and 142 children, while the injured comprise 243 children, 209 women, and 288 men. The NDMA said the deluges, which began on June 26, have left a trail of destruction across the country. (WITH INPUT FROM APP)

Chinese mountaineer dies while scaling K2

A Chinese mountaineer died while descending the world's second-highest peak, with Pakistani rescuers waiting on Thursday for weather conditions to improve to recover her body. Guan Jing was descending from the summit of K2 on Tuesday night when she was hit by falling rocks, Deputy Commissioner for Shigar district Arif Ahmad told AFP. "An army aviation team is ready for the recovery of the body and is waiting for better weather conditions," he said. According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan, which monitors local climbing expeditions, Guan is the fourth casualty of the country's summer climbing season. Guan was among 30 climbers who reached the summit of K2 on Monday before beginning her fatal descent. "The incident occurred on the Abruzzi Spur route between Camp I and Advanced Base Camp — a section notorious for frequent rockfalls," the Alpine Club said. At 8,611 metres (28,251 feet), K2 on the Pakistan-China border sits 238 metres shy of world-topping Himalayan giant Everest but is considered more technically challenging.

10 killed as cloudbursts, torrential rains wreak havoc in GB, Kashmir

Cloudbursts and torrential rains have caused widespread destruction across northern and mountainous regions, triggering flash floods, landslides, and road blockages that have left several villages cut off and forced evacuations, resulting in deaths of at least 10 people, Aaj News reported. In GB's Ghizer district, raging floodwaters swept through multiple streams and nullahs following heavy rains. The Ashkoman Road was blocked at eight different points, and a vehicle was washed away in a flood. In Skardu, a cloudburst caused severe flooding in the Bargi stream, forcing residents of nearby villages to flee to safer ground. In Khalti village of Gupis tehsil, seven people were caught in the floods; three, including a woman, lost their lives. In Diamer, two people were swept away by floodwaters while a child was injured in a landslide. In Thoi, Ghizer, one person went missing after being caught in a flood. Thundershowers expected countrywide including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad next week: PMD Flood damage also disrupted connectivity across various areas, with low-lying residents in Ashkoman being relocated as the Ishkoman River swelled. In Skardu, an American mountaineer was injured by a rockfall during a K2 expedition and was airlifted by a Pakistan Army helicopter for treatment. In AJK, torrential rains brought large-scale damage. In Bagh, a tourist vehicle was swept away by water, though all passengers were rescued safely. In Nasirabad, Muzaffarabad, a cloudburst triggered a surge in the Surli Sacha stream, washing away a house and killing six members of the same family. Landslides in Neelum Valley stranded multiple tourists, prompting ongoing rescue operations. In and around Bagh city, overflowing streams disrupted daily life and caused severe erosion along the Mahil and Malwani streams. In Abbottabad, a school student drowned while attempting to cross a seasonal stream, while another student and a teacher were injured. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast further rain in the coming days. Local administrations and rescue teams are carrying out emergency relief and evacuation efforts in the affected areas.

Flood kills 34 in IIOJK flood

OCCUPIED SRINAGAR: Powerful torrents driven by intense rain smashed into a Himalayan mountain village in stands for Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and killed at least 34 people on Thursday, a top local government official told AFP. 'The news is grim,' IIOJK Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said in a statement, reporting a 'cloudburst' of intense rain that had hit the Kishtwar district. Crowds gathered at a Kishtwar hospital while people carried some of the injured on stretchers. 'We have found 34 dead bodies and rescued 35 injured people,' said Pankaj Kumar Sharma, district commissioner of Kishtwar. Helicopters rescue people stranded by floods on key India pilgrim route 'There are chances of more dead bodies being found,' he told AFP. Sushil Kumar, a resident of nearby Atholi village, told AFP: 'I saw at least 15 dead bodies brought to the local hospital.' Rescue teams are likely to face difficulty reaching the area. Roads had already been damaged by days of heavy storms. The area lies more than 200 kilometres (125 miles) by road from the region's main city Srinagar. 'Every possible assistance will be provided to those in need,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi said. Floods on August 5 swept away the Himalayan town of Dharali in India's Uttarakhand state and buried it in mud. The likely death toll from that disaster is more than 70 but has yet to be confirmed. Floods and landslides are common during the monsoon season from June to September, but experts say climate change, coupled with poorly planned development, is increasing their frequency and severity. The UN's World Meteorological Organization said last year that increasingly intense floods and droughts are a 'distress signal' of what is to come as climate change makes the planet's water cycle ever more unpredictable.
