Heavy Hitters
Former UFC stars say the organisation is built on their pain, not their pay
Some of the biggest names in Australian mixed martial arts say they were pushed to their physical and financial limits while the UFC made over a billion dollars in revenue.
In this week's Four Corners, reporter Mahmood Fazal speaks to former fighters who describe a culture of exploitation, secrecy, and lasting damage.
Professional fighters share what it's like to be locked into restrictive contracts, take punishing fights, and end up broke or broken after years in the cage.
The UFC has grown into a $12.1 billion business, a dominant force in global sport, and even in American politics. It's received public money and public support here in Australia.
But evidence suggests the company has kept wages low, limited competition, and left fighters with few options.
Fighters are challenging the UFC in US courts, with one class action recently settled for $375 million.
As Australia embraces the UFC, Heavy Hitters reveals the cost for the fighters who risk so much for the spectacle.
Heavy Hitters, reported by Mahmood Fazal and produced by Lesley Robinson, goes to air on Monday 9 June at 8.30pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.

Gold Digger: Feel down about your gold stocks? It could just be seasonal depression
The All Ords Gold sub-index is down 12% in the past month But June is often a down time for Aussie gold miners, Canaccord says Price bets from analysts remain bullish Wet weather got you feeling down in the dumps? There's seasonality, also, in the world of gold stocks. After a ripping start to 2025, the past month has disappointed. Gold equities may be the best asset class out over a 12 month time frame, close to 55% up if you use the ASX All Ords gold sub-index as a barometer. Over the past month, though, we're talking a 12.2% decline. That's even with a relatively stagnant gold price, which peaked at over US$3400/oz mid-month amid World War 3 fears stoked by Israeli-Iranian missile fire before dying down once a ceasefire set in. There may be reasons to remain optimistic, even if you're worried you've now got into gold miners and the top and are staring down from the precipice at a gaping abyss below. Gold stocks, as it turns out, are vulnerable to a sort of seasonal depression, a winter blues as it were. "Reflecting on a tough month of June for gold stocks, we analysed the monthly share price performance for six of the steady state producers over a six-year period to see if there was a seasonality trend," Canaccord Genuity analysts led by veteran gold bull Tim McCormack said. "The results are obvious; June was consistently the worst month on average. The purpose of this note is not to define the rationale behind the seasonality (June gold price moves are generally benign), but simply point to the potential for a rebound in the 2H of the calendar year, acknowledging that past performance is no guarantee of future results." In each of the past six years the six largest, long-standing ASX gold miners have finished June in the red as a collective at an average rate of 11%, the worst of any month. June quarter production reports are on the horizon, an opportunity for the big players to reclaim gains with expected strong cash flows, as bullion remains in the order of US$3340/oz ($5084/oz). Bullish Canaccord remains bullish on the gold thematic. They're not the only ones. State Street Investment Management, one of the world's top asset managers, this week assigned an 80% probability that gold prices will be flat to higher in the next 6-9 months. They have a 30% weighting on a bull scenario which could see gold approach US$4000/oz. There's plenty of downside protection, if State Street is to be believed, with its team led by head of gold strategy Aakash Doshi calling US$3000/oz "the new US$2000/oz). Gold's forecast further increase could be influenced by a few factors. State Street rates gold ETF investment to potentially go higher, with tonnages held by physically backed ETFs around 20% below their late 2020 peak. There's also the prospect of a Chinese consumer rebound from non-traditional sectors now permitted to hold bullion like insurance treasuries, strong central bank demand, global debt at an all time high of close to 30% of government balance sheets and the potential for rate cuts from the US Fed. BMI Commodity Insights meanwhile maintained a US$3100/oz gold price forecast in its latest update, but cautioned there were "downside risks". It has bullion dropping to US$2900/oz in 2026 and US$2700/oz in 2027, eventually falling to US$2400/oz in 2029. Cote d'Ivoire from Turaco Gold (ASX:TCG). TCG is now a $520 million explorer thanks to its bet on the land of Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure (Kolo as well), which has emerged as the premier jurisdiction for new entrants into West Africa after military coups in Mali and Burkina Faso. SFM will be itching to follow in the footsteps of Eburnea's vendor, Turaco having plenty of work on its hands at the 3.55Moz Afema gold project. Historic drilling includes 26m at 4.82g/t and 30m at 1.92g/t at different points along a 2km mineralised zone in the Satama permit. SFM, which is raising $1.2m at 5c per share, is also picking up a 65% share in the Bouake North application, 35km from Endeavour Mining's 3Moz Lafigue gold mine. That placement came at a 61.3% premium and is already well out of the money, SFM shares fetching 14c on Friday (for a modest MC of $11m). Falcon Metals (ASX:FAL) Mark Bennett chaired Chalice Mining (ASX:CHN) spinoff Falcon announced some high grade gold intercepts from its first drill hole at Blue Moon, a prospect directly north of the 22Moz Bendigo Goldfield. It's chasing what the company says is a down-plunge extension of the Garden Gully anticline from where 5.2Moz at 15g/t Au has been historically produced. Those diamond drill hits, both from the same hole: 2.2m at 6.5g/t Au from 41.2m, including 0.3m at 39.2g/t Au from 41.2m; and 2.4m at 8.4g/t Au from 600m, including 0.3m at 48.7g/t Au from 600m; and 0.3m at 18.2g/t Au from 602.1m. "This is an exciting start to the drill program, intersecting high-grade veins in our first hole in the east limb of the anticline," Falcon MD Tim Markwell said. "The recognition of Bendigo-style mineralisation with visible gold proves our concept that the high-grade Bendigo lodes plunge into Falcon tenure and provides encouragement to drill wedge holes, in order to track these zones closer towards the fold hinge, where they are usually thickest.' A bit of visible gold in there as well. Nice to see our rock lickers have found a purpose for the 5c piece.

Sharemarket breaks fresh record after closing at 8600 points for the first time, mixed day for major banks
Australia's sharemarket cracked a new record close on Friday, with strong job numbers out of the US offsetting fears of a slower global economy. The benchmark ASX 200 index eked out a small gain of 7.2 points or 0.08 per cent to finish the week at 8603 points. The broader All Ordinaries also closed marginally higher up 8.3 points or 0.09 per cent to 8841.90. Australia's dollar slipped 0.06 per cent and is now buying 65.73 US cents. On an overall positive end to the week, eight of the 11 sectors finished in the green, led by consumer discretionary shares which added 1.00 per cent during Friday's trading. Wesfarmers shares finished up 0.81 per cent to $84.37 while Aristocrat Leisure finished up 1.44 per cent to $67.82 and JB Hi-Fi ended in the green up 0.64 per cent to $110.02. WiseTech Global jumped 1.10 per cent to $112.10, Xero gained 0.86 per cent to $178.01 and Life360 leapt 1.94 per cent to $33.11. It was a mixed day for the major banks. While CBA dropped 0.94 per cent to $178 the other three all finished in the green. NAB shares are up 0.62 per cent to $39.15, Westpac shares 0.45 per cent to $33.63 and ANZ rose 0.80 per cent to $30.32. Australia's sharemarket followed a strong lead in from Wall Street thanks to stronger than expected economic data. AMP chief economist and head of investment strategy Shane Oliver said markets mostly pushed higher over the last week, with US shares rising 1.7 per cent to a record high helped by hopes for trade deals, solid US jobs data and as Congress passed Trump's tax cut bill. 'The strong US lead along with expectations for another RBA rate cut in the week ahead also pushed the Australian share market to a new record high with around a 1 per cent gain for the week,' Dr Oliver said. But the economist cautioned against further rises as markets factor in trade tariffs which are set to start next week. 'With the 9th July tariff deadline just a few days away the US is likely to announce more trade deals and Trump has indicated he will start sending letters to countries without deals notifying what their tariff rate will be, with a range of 'maybe 60 or 70 per cent ...to 10 and 20 per cent' commencing from 1 August, Dr Oliver said. 'So after a few months of relative calm, it could all be back on again.' In company news G8 Education continues its slide having fallen every day since Tuesday after it came out a former employee has been charged with alleged child-related offences. Shares dropped a further 3.5 per cent to $0.96 on Friday and is now down 19.33 per cent for the week. On its second day of listing GemLife fell 5.8 per cent to $4.08. While it initially jumped on the opening bell, it is now below its listing price of $4.16.

Australian job where there are 100 men for every woman
ANALYSIS Are you reading this at work? If so, look around. See any women? No? You might be a plumber then. Plumber (general) is the most gender-unbalanced job category in Australia, with 150 dudes for every woman. The latest tax statistics are out and while everyone else is looking at how much people get paid (plumbers have average total income of $95,000, before deductions), I find one of the most surprising things is how gender-skewed our jobs are. It's like a party of 17-year-olds. Over here we have all the boys. In the opposite corner, all the girls. Plumbing is for blokes and, unsurprisingly, midwifery is the role most biased to people who identify as female. The ATO rocks an old-fashioned binary gender system, they put people as either male or female. But apparently, the society we live in is pretty old-fashioned and binary too. In Australia in 2025 truckies are gents ($86,000 in average total income) and childcare workers ($46,000) are ladies, as the next chart shows. This chart depicts the dozen biggest jobs in Australia, the most common jobs. Among them we see some are gender balanced, like being a high school teacher ($95,000) or a sales director ($138,000). But most are unbalanced one way or another. But those numbers, even the truckie numbers, look fair and balanced compared to some smaller job categories. Here's the extremes for the boys, jobs where there is no queue for the ladies loo, because there is no ladies loo. If you notice something about those jobs, they're mostly about building things. We have a shortage of tradies in this country. Maybe we could solve it by getting women involved a bit? Sure, there's a few tradie jobs where the higher average male upper body strength might be important (like bricklaying ($77,000), although even they sometimes use a little conveyor belt these days I think?). But there are no real reasons a woman can't be a plumber or an electrician ($116,000). I hired a sparkie to put in a new powerpoint for me the other day (and a few other little bits and pieces). They sent three blokes and charged me $600. The heaviest thing they had to lift was the dustpan and brush to clean up some sawdust at the end. The average 100kg senior electrician can't even fit in the crawl space and sends his apprentice up instead. We might get a better quality of work by having some female tradies! If we want to build a few more homes in the next 10 years than we did in the last 10 years, having all hands on deck might help. Changes So are these jobs getting more blokey or less? Turns out we can answer that by going back to data from four years prior. As the next chart shows, even though women in these jobs are rare as hen's teeth, they're actually increasing. We are making some progress. But geeze, it's a bit slow. At this rate we could have one female carpenter for every 100 male carpenters by 2030 (carpenters make $85,000). Remember that female workforce participation is rising and male participation is stable. But the person working the concrete pump ($95,000) is even more likely to be a dude than before! Forget farmers, they should have Concrete Pump Operator Wants A Wife. Overall the change in female workforce participation means you'd expect to see more and more jobs with a higher share of women in them. And we do. Although some jobs are changing faster than others. The person putting tiles on your roof these days is still probably a fella, but there's far more female roof tilers than there were! Can we get a glimpse of the future? What's the workforce going to look like in 10 years? One way to have a look is to check the gender balance of all the apprentices, which is what the next chart shows. Some of the most female apprentice roles are actually getting even more female, like apprentices in health and welfare support services ($46,000 a year for the apprentice). But the blokiest apprentice roles are getting more female very slowly. Plumbing has a few more women and girls in apprentice roles. And about 5.5 per cent of apprentice electricians are females now. But at this rate is going to be a long time before the plumbers get any female colleagues.
