Novak Djokovic, MS Dhoni and the painful April of watching the unbreakable legends break
Novak Djokovic can be advised to follow MS Dhoni's IPL season. If the Serb finds cricket boring, he can just watch his four-ball inning – calling it a painful-to-watch outing would be more apt – against Punjab Kings in CSK's last game.
Dhoni, 43, has looked in shape, sufficiently beefed up. But he couldn't middle many balls. When he did, he failed to clear the ropes, like he did once upon a time. CSK 's fortunes would get impacted. The IPL final is still about a month away but the multiple champions are out of contention. Dhoni failed when his team wanted him to succeed the most. And in his and CSK's failure, is a lesson for Djokovic – Form wasn't on tap, it doesn't flow by just turning the knob.
Few days back, towards the end of last month, Djokovic, 37, had lost to World No.44 Matteo Arnaldi in straight sets. It was a meek surrender. Acknowledging his fall but not sure if it was time to call it quits, Djokovic spoke about a 'new reality'. He confessed how his goal these days was to win a few rounds and not the tournament.
But like all sporting greats, in the business of performing miracles all their lives, he wasn't writing himself off at Grand Slams. 'Obviously Grand Slams are the most important tournaments for me. Which doesn't mean that I don't want to win here, of course I wanted to, but Grand Slams are where I really want to play the best tennis,' he said. That was the catch. Djokovic believed that 'best tennis' was on tap and he was capable of turning the knob four times a year.

Watching Dhoni might make the tennis legend wiser about his future. Dhoni's April was far worse than Djokovic. Very early this season, the IPL trophy was nowhere near his sight and winning a few games was his team's realistic goal. Personally, playing a winning hand seemed beyond him. These days, he had modest targets – it was about getting a clean connection between bat and ball.
Dhoni had been living the 'new reality' that Djokovic spoke about for the entire 2024 season. 2025 was about him waking up to an 'age-old reality'. A shadow of his old self, he was a walking warning to the pros dragging their feet even after father time had blown the final whistle.
Back in the day, Dhoni always rose to the occasion. Now that was not the case. For CSK and Dhoni, that game against Punjab Kings was crucial. It was now-or-never – win or forget playoffs moment. Chepauk was packed. It was an arena that has witnessed many magical Dhoni knocks. The venue, the fans, the cause – this was the famous Thala hour. It took four-balls to realise, this used to be the Thala hour.
A shadow of his old self, Dhoni was a walking warning to the pros dragging their feet even after father time had blown the final whistle. (BCCI)
CSK were about 170 in the 18th over when Dhoni walked in. They needed to cross 200 to make it a game. The first ball from the tall South African pacer Marco Jansen was short, aimed at his head. Back in the day, Dhoni would have swatted it over square leg. He swung the bat, it caught the top edge and flew for four. Chepauk erupted. The next ball too was short but he couldn't clear the boundary. At least it went where he intended.
Next up was Yuzvendra Chahal. Dhoni knows him inside out. The leggie used to be his pupil, rather a puppet, when he was the India captain. From behind the stumps, he would tutor Chahal all the time. Chahal pitched his first ball on his stumps. Dhoni lofted it for a straight six. How times change. Now, it was Chahal who was reading his master's mind. Aware that Dhoni had got slower and lost touch, Chahal tossed the next ball outside off. Dhoni failed to reach or make a solid connect. He was caught on the fence. The touch had vanished, and so had the halo.
In a season where he has scored 151 in 10 outings, this has happened often. Dhoni is losing his aura, an important weapon that helped during those tight last-over situations. There was a time when Dhoni would leave it for late and pull off impossible wins – that was his way of leaving his signature on a winning game. This IPL too he tried the Houdini but his team sunk. He no longer could unshackle the chains in time.
Djokovic too is a master of tight matches. He has perfected the art of winning tie-breakers – where the situation isn't too different from cricket's final overs. There have been times when Djokovic would be down 0-2 but he would still wear that nonplussed Dhoni expression. Such was his winning percentage in 3rd, 4th and 5th sets, that he, his rivals and the world knew who was the favourite when the game went to the wire.

This April, the month when the mighty fell, Djokovic too wasn't his old self. He lost three matches in a row, something he hadn't done for ages on the tour. His last loss was to Dutch lucky loser Botic van de Zandschulp at Indian Wells. The game went to the deciding third set but he couldn't beat the World No. 85. That day he committed 37 unforced errors – if cricket kept that statistical count Dhoni's numbers would be similar. After the game, Djokovic confessed 'it was a struggle'.
It is these struggles that make fans, accustomed to dispensing superlatives from their couches, wince. They feel betrayed by the slowing reflexes of the aging of Supermen. Sport has always been about those obsessed with the singular Peter Pan story. Nobody stops ageing – neither stars, nor fans. But spectators would always want their heroes to be super-fit and super-successful.
Watching Dhoni, Djokovic will get to know that the 'new reality' of downsizing ambitions comes with risks of shrinking your stature, denting your reputation and adding an anti-climatic postscript to your legacy. Form or best tennis aren't on tap, they need to perennially flow. Only when 'giving your best' becomes a habit, it will organically flow into your veins at the opportune time. Dhoni couldn't do that, wait for Paris to find if Djokovic can.

'Deaths at 3:50 pm, I got information at 5:45': Siddaramaiah on why RCB felicitation event continued despite stampede; says 'I went as invitee'
Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah (File photo) NEW DELHI: Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday defended the decision to go ahead with the event to felicitate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) players in front of the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha despite a stampede outside the nearby Chinnaswamy Stadium, the team's home ground. On June 4, along with the ceremony to felicitate RCB on clinching their maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title, a celebration was also held at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where a large number of fans thronged, leading to stampede, in which 11 people died and 56 were injured. "Actually at 3:50 pm, deaths were reported at the hospital. I got to know only at 5:45 pm. Until then, I did not know about the stampede and deaths," news agency PTI quoted Siddaramaiah as saying. He was speaking to reporters during a visit to Mysuru. The chief minister also clarified that the ceremony at the Vidhana Soudha was by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and that he attended the programme only as an invitee. "The KSCA secretary and treasurer met and invited me. It was not organised by us. They had, and I was invited. They told me that the governor would also come. So, I had gone. "Nothing untoward happened at the Vidhana Soudha. The stampede incident happened at the stadium later," he added. DCP's letter surfaces Siddaramaiah's remarks come even as a letter by DCP (Vidhana Soudha security) to the secretary to the Karnataka government's Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), surfaced . The letter warned against organising the function hastily, and highlighted that the force did not have an adequate number of personnel to provide security for a ceremony where a large number of people would gather, at short notice. This in response to the DPAR seeking the DCP's opinion on holding the felicitation event on the grand stairs of the Vidhana Soudha to honour the RCB players. "RCB has a fan following across the country. Organising the event in a hurry on the grand stairs of Vidhana Soudha will lead to lakhs of cricket fans arriving there. This will lead to problems in 'bandobast' (arrangement) since there is a shortage of officers/personnel," the DCP's letter read. The officer further said if the event is organised, passes for visitors to Vidhana Soudha should be completely stopped. Also, as there were chances of the secretariat staff getting their family members for the event, he suggested an order aimed at ensuring this doesn't happen. The officer also sought a holiday in the afternoon for secretariat staff to ensure that they too don't come there. The DCP also called for installation of more CCTV cameras in the vicinity of Vidhana Soudha - which is a vital installation - and nearby places in view of the large gatherings expected.

Karnataka CM defends holding RCB felicitation at Vidhana Soudha despite police warning
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday defended the decision to go ahead with the RCB victory celebration in front of Vidhana Soudha, saying no untoward incident happened there. The CM's reaction came to the DCP (Vidhana Soudha security) letter written before the event warning against holding felicitations at Vidhana Soudha "hastily", surfaced now. The CM, however, clarified that the event at Vidhana Soudha was organised by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), and that he attended the programme as he was invited. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The price of dental implants may surprise you Dental Implants | Search Ads Search Now Undo On June 4, along with a felicitation to the RCB on IPL victory at Vidhana Soudha, a celebration was also organised at the Chinnaswamy cricket stadium, where a large number of people thronged, leading to stampede, in which eleven people died and 56 were injured. A letter by DCP (Vidhana Soudha security) on June 4 to Secretary to the government, Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), warning against organising the event hastily, and also highlighting that they did not have enough personnel to organise security for such an event, where a large number of people would gather, at short notice, has surfaced. Live Events The letter was in response to DPAR seeking his opinion on holding the felicitation event on the grand stairs of the Vidhana Soudha to honour the RCB players. This will lead to problems in bandobast since there is a shortage of officers/personnel in Vidhana Soudha security division," the DCP's letter said. As the RCB fan following is huge, police personnel from outside the city will be required for bandobast and it will require time, he further said, both law and order and the traffic police will have to coordinate for a mega event like this and there is not enough time. The officer said if the event is organised, the issual of online or offline passes for visitors to Vidhana Soudha should be completely stopped. Also, as there are chances of the secretariat staff getting their family members for the event, an order should be issued aimed at ensuring that this doesn't happen. The letter also calls for installation of more CCTV cameras in the vicinity of Vidhana Soudha, which is a vital installation and nearby places in view of the large gatherings expected; and highlights the need for an anti-drone system. However, at the end, the DCP's letter says that the Vidhana Soudha comes under the ambit of a heritage building and a vital installation. Keeping security in view, time is required to organise the event without causing any harm to the building and by following the rules Despite this, the government's decision will be abided by. Responding to a question about the letter, Siddaramaiah, speaking to reporters in Mysuru, said, "...at the end, what does the letter say? The police will act according to what the government decides. It did not come to me at all. DAPR secretary has given the permission. Of course I was told. I said give permission to the event in front of Vidhana Soudha." Questioning whether any incident happened during the event in front of Vidhana Soudha in which the Governor too had participated, he said nothing happened there. The stampede incident happened at the stadium later. Asked whether DPAR secretary Sathyavathi will be suspended like five police officers, including the then Commissioner of Police B Dayananda, the CM asked, "What has Sathyavathi done? What happened at Vidhana Soudha?" Noting that the DPAR Secretary asked him for permission in the regular course about holding the event in front of Vidhana Soudha and the Chief Secretary said it can be and the police have agreed, Siddaramaiah said, "The KSCA Secretary and Treasurer met me and invited me. It is not organised by us. They had organised and I was invited. They told me that the Governor would also come. So, I had gone. Other than that, I don't know anything. The government has nothing to do...I was not invited to the stadium event." The DCP in his letter has also mentioned the need to obtain a no-objection certificate from the PWD department regarding the stage, fitness certificate from an engineer regarding electric equipment used, also about anti-sabotage check. Asked whether the stampede incident had brought embarrassment to the government, Siddaramaiah said when the government has done nothing wrong, why embarrassment? Action has been taken against those who are at fault prima facie. "Was resignation given after the Kumbh Mela stampede in which 50-60 people were killed?" Replying to criticism about him going ahead with the felicitation event, in spite of deaths due to stampede, the CM said, "Actually at 3:50 pm death was reported at the hospital. I got to know only at 5:45 pm. Until then, I did not know about the stampede and deaths." Responding to a question on the BJP's protest demanding his resignation and legal action against him, Siddaramaiah said, "What is the Chief Minister's fault? The BJP is doing it politically. They are making false allegations against me. Where is the government wrong?" On the demand to shift the cricket stadium outside Bengaluru, the CM said, "We will consider has to be identified."

Bengaluru stampede: Police letter flagged lack of time to prepare for event at Vidhana Soudha
Even as a blame game has broken out between the police and the State government over mishaps during Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebrations, it has now emerged that the Vidhana Soudha security had flagged concerns of overcrowding, lack of time and shortage of security personnel for the felicitation for the team on the grand steps of Vidhana Soudha. This letter is the only document that shows the State Government overruled concerns raised by the Bengaluru City Police and went ahead with RCB victory celebrations. While it is true that no untoward incidents happened at the Vidhana Soudha event, police have argued an open-air event at the administrative nerve centre of the state, coupled with a unilateral announcement by RCB of a victory parade on June 4 morning, brought lakhs to the street, eventually leading to a stampede at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) had written to DCP (Vidhana Soudha Security) on June 3 seeking an opinion on felicitation for the RCB team if they won in the IPL finals. Responding to this letter on June 4, M. N. Karibasavagowda, DCP (Vidhana Soudha Security), flagged concerns over 'lakhs of RCB fans gathering for the event' and said since there was a shortage of security personnel in the Vidhana Soudha division, making bandobast for the event could be a problem. He further says that there was a lack of time to deploy more personnel from outside the Vidhana Soudha Security unit to coordinate with Law and Order and Traffic Police. DCP Vidhana Soudha Security concludes that there was need of more time to hold the event at Vidhana Soudha, a vital installation following all rules, but says the police would abide by whatever decision the government takes. Multiple sources said that flagging a lack of time to prepare, the city police suggested that the victory celebrations be postponed to Sunday. However, they were overruled, sources said. Fresh unrest in Manipur as CBI arrests Arambai Tenggol leader Violence broke out across Manipur's Imphal Valley after a top leader of Arambai Tenggol, an armed Meitei radical group, was picked up by security forces on Saturday evening. Four others belonging to the Arambai Tenggol were reportedly detained for questioning. Members of the Arambai Tenggol clashed with security forces personnel when they went to pick up A. Kanan Singh, a former Manipur Police head constable. A volley of gunshots was heard and supporters of the group burnt tyres and old furniture on the road. Vehicles of the security forces were torched on the Airport Road, and scores of people, including security personnel, were injured. As the violence spread, the government clamped prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and suspended Internet and mobile data services in the five Imphal Valley districts of Imphal East, Imphal West, Bishnupur, Kakching, and Thoubal for five days. The Arambai Tenggol, which came into prominence after the ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities broke out in May 2023, countered by 'imposing' a 10-day shutdown across these five districts. Some youth, believed to be members of the group, threatened self-immolation by pouring inflammable fluids on themselves. By morning, however, the streets of Imphal and the valley beyond wore a deserted look. Hours later, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) issued a statement, saying it had arrested an Arambai Tenggol member at the Imphal Airport on Sunday. 'He was involved in various criminal activities related to Manipur violence in 2023. The information related to his arrest has been given to his family members,' the federal agency said, adding that it was investigating the Manipur violence cases according to the direction of the Supreme Court. 'The trial of the cases has been shifted to Guwahati in view of the law and order situation in Manipur. The said arrested member of Arambai Tenggol has been brought from Imphal to Guwahati, and he will be produced before the competent court for police remand. Investigation is continuing,' the CBI said. The day also saw a delegation of MLAs from various parties meet with Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan. A statement from the Raj Bhavan later said the MLAs apprised the Governor of the current law and order situation in Manipur and sought his intervention to find an amicable solution. 'The Governor informed the delegation that all necessary steps are being taken to address the concerns and restore normalcy,' the statement said. Top security officials were present at the meeting. Meanwhile, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested 'three insurgents' in a case related to an attack on security forces that had killed two police commandos and injured several others. 'The three men, along with their associates, had planned, conspired, and executed the attack on an India Reserve Battalion post and security forces in Moreh, Tengnoupal district, on 17th January 2024,' the NIA said in a statement. The accused were identified as Thangminlen Mate, Kamginthang Gangte, and Hentinthang Kipgen alias Thangneo Kipgen. Manipur was relatively calm after the imposition of the President's Rule on February 13. The Imphal Valley descended into chaos over the alleged 'disrespect of Manipur' by security personnel on May 20. A 'civil disobedience campaign' launched by a pressure group thereafter was suspended when floods hit the valley more than a week ago. More than 250 people have been killed and at least 60,000 displaced in Manipur's ethnic violence. Write to EC formally: Poll panel sources on Rahul seeking reply on election rigging claim A day after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sought the Election Commission's response on his article alleging rigging in Maharashtra polls, sources in the poll authority said on Sunday the constitutional body would respond only if the Leader of the Opposition writes to it directly. They also pointed out that as part of its outreach, the EC had invited all six national parties for separate interactions. While the other five met the EC brass, Congress cancelled the May 15 meeting. Gandhi had on Saturday hit back at the Election Commission after sources in the poll panel rejected allegation of rigging in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly polls, saying evasion would not protect its credibility but telling the truth would. In an article, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha had alleged 'match-fixing' in the Maharashtra polls and claimed that it would next happen in the Bihar elections and 'anywhere the BJP is losing'. Responding to a question on Gandhi's demand for CCTV footage of polling stations in Maharashtra of the evening hours, the sources said as per instructions of the EC, the CCTV footage of polling stations can always be scrutinised by the competent high court when an election petition is filed. 'This is done by the EC to protect the integrity of elections as well as protect the privacy of voters. Why does Rahul Gandhi want to invade the privacy of voters, which is to be protected by the EC as per electoral laws?' a functionary responded. He said Gandhi should trust the high courts to deal with any discrepancy. They also said that by alleging fudging in the voters list, Gandhi has actually questioned booth-level agents appointed by his own party and polling and counting agents appointed by his own party's candidates in Maharashtra. In the run-up to the PM's visit for the summit to be held in Kananaski, Canada, on June 15-17, which PM Modi was invited to by Canadian PM Carney on Friday, New Delhi has also hosted UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy on Saturday. Leaders of Brazil, South Africa, Mexico, Ukraine and Australia have also been called as special invitees, Canadian media reported. In 2026, NDA will form governments in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal: Amit Shah Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday asserted that the NDA would form governments in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal. Addressing party office bearers, he hailed Madurai as a city of 'Parivartan' and said his party's Karyakarta Sammelan (workers meet) would lead to change as well, of dislodging DMK from power. The DMK's corrupt rule has affected the poor, women and children in Tamil Nadu, Shah alleged, and urged his party members to resolve to dislodge the Stalin-led Dravidian party government from the seat of power. At least two classrooms in each school across Tamil Nadu could have been built with sum equivalent to TASMAC irregularities. Also, the Union Home Minister dared Stalin to explain if he has fulfilled all of DMK's 2021 poll assurances. 'In the 2026 Assembly election, the BJP-AIADMK will form the NDA Government in Tamil Nadu, and people will defeat the DMK in the 2026 polls,' he said. 'The DMK is a 100% failure Government,' he added. 'In 2026, in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, the NDA will form governments,' he said. Shah also said, 'The BJP government at the Centre provided ₹6.80 lakh crore in 10 years, and yet Chief Minister M.K. Stalin asks what the Centre has done for T.N.' Shah, before addressing the state, district and mandal level office bearers, chaired the meeting of the state core committee of the Tamil Nadu BJP. Ahead of leading the core panel parleys, he worshipped at the Madurai Meenakshi temple. During his April visit to Tamil Nadu, Shah announced the revival of ties with the AIADMK. In his address, BJP state president Nainar Nagendran hit out at the DMK regime over the law and order scenario and questioned the police over targeted killings of elderly people in villages in the western Kongu region. He appealed to cadres to work with determination and described the alliance with AIADMK as a 'suitable alliance'. Nagendran said his resolve will be to take the maximum number of MLAs to the Assembly, like a 'yatra'. He hailed Amit Shah as 'India's Iron Man, another Sardar Vallabhai Patel.' BJP leader K. Annamalai said the only goal is unseating DMK from power in the state and urged cadres to go ahead with this 'sankalpa' (resolution). Shah arrived in Madurai on Saturday night, his second crucial visit to Tamil Nadu in two months, to rev up the party machinery ahead of the 2026 Assembly election in the state. His visit has materialised exactly a week after the ruling DMK conducted its crucial general council meeting here, targeting the BJP and passing resolutions condemning the Centre.
