Stormzy says his acting debut is ‘all about joy, spirit and fearless energy of youth'

Perth Now20 hours ago

Stormzy has said his acting debut is 'all about the joy, spirit and fearless energy of youth'.
The 31-year-old British rapper has just launched his new production company, #Merky Films, and the performer – real name Michael Omari – will be taking the leading role in Big Man, a 24-minute short film and the first project from his new company.
He said in a statement quoted by Variety: 'I hope you love our first project, Big Man, as much as we loved making it.
'For me, it's all about the joy, spirit and fearless energy of youth – that feeling like life is one big adventure and the world's your playground.
'I hope it inspires you to dream bigger, live louder, and hold on to that unapologetic energy that comes with being young.'
The film, directed by Academy Award-winner Aneil Karia, tells the fictional story of Tenzman, a former rap star facing an uncertain chapter in his life. It is set for release on YouTube at 8pm on Wednesday 18 June, and was made in association with Apple.
Stormzy's new venture builds on the expanding #Merky brand, which already includes #Merky Books, #Merky FC and the #Merky Foundation.
Merky Films aims to increase access to television and film for Afro-Caribbean and other underrepresented communities.
Its stated mission is to champion new voices by creating projects that 'connect communities, celebrate culture and inspire meaningful change'.
A development deal is already in place with Netflix to create multiple projects, including a 'powerful drama series' and a 'seminal biopic', with additional talks ongoing with other film companies.
Speaking about the launch of #Merky Films, Stormzy added: 'I always say: music is my first love, but film is my second. #Merky Films is something I've been dreaming about for ages – a space for powerful British stories and a solid home for fresh, unexpected art. It's a natural next step for everything we do at #Merky – sharing our stories, spotlighting important voices and making room for those who deserve to be seen and heard.'
He also expressed hope the company will help elevate new talent, adding: 'We always like to give that opportunity before the world latches on and catches up.
'I definitely, in 30 or 40 years' time, want to see whoever wins the best director of the year at the Oscars to say that the first thing they directed was for #Merky Films.'
Future projects from the production house will include documentaries, animations and mockumentaries.

Arnold Schwarzenegger wants family movie with Patrick Schwarzenegger and Chris Pratt

Arnold Schwarzenegger is keen to make a movie with Patrick Schwarzenegger and Chris Pratt. The 77-year-old actor is open to the idea of a collaboration with his 31-year-old son and son-in-law - who married his daughter Katherine Schwarzenegger in 2019 - but insisted they wouldn't do so for the sake of it as the script would have to be good enough. He told E! News of the possibility: "It's one of those things that if there's a great script, then of course, we would do it. "But you can't just make up this stuff. You can't just say, 'OK, let's just put the three together in a movie and not have a great script.' " The Fubar star called on filmmakers to make the project happen. He said: "You don't have to talk about it, just do it." Arnold - who, as well as Katherine, 35, and Patrick, 31, also has Christina, 33, and Christopher, 27, with ex-wife Maria Shriver and Joseph Baena, 27, with Mildren Baena - is also open to the idea of following in his son's footsteps and starring in The White Lotus. Asked if he'd be interested in a role in the anthology series, he said: "Whenever I see something good, I am interested in it, so we will see." The former Governor of California is delighted to witness Patrick's success because his son has always been interested in acting. He said: "Patrick always had a love for show business. He has spent a lot of time on the set with me when he was a kid. He was doing his homework in my movie trailer, he was watching me shooting on stage. I think he got the desire right then and there." Meanwhile, the veteran action star is excited about the new season of Fubar, even if he finds certain physical scenes "very, very tough" these days. He teased: "The second season is a lot, a lot of great, great action, and also really funny moments. "The actual sequences are very, very tough to do, especially when you do night shoots and all that. But it's a lot of fun." While Arnold is proud of Patrick, he recently admitted he was shocked when his son stripped naked in The White Lotus. During a joint interview for Variety's 'Actors on Actors' series, he told his son: "I couldn't believe [it]. "I said to myself, 'I'm watching your show, and I'm watching your butt sticking out there.' And all of a sudden, I see the weenie. "What is going on here? This is crazy. "Then I said to myself, 'Well, Arnold, hello. You did the same thing in Conan and Terminator, so don't complain about it.' "But it was a shock to me that you were following my footsteps so closely."

Brian Wilson 'went silent' and 'became detached' after battling COVID-19

Brian Wilson "went silent" and "became detached" as he battled the long-term effects of COVID-19, according to his bandmate Al Jardine. The Beach Boys legend passed away on Wednesday (11.06.25) at the age of 82 after a long battle with health issues and his close friend Al has now opened up about the "turning point" back in 2022 when he saw the singer/songwriter begin to deteriorate. Al told Variety: "There was no trauma to speak of until that very last tour in '22. He kind of went silent and began to suffer the effects of long-term COVID, I was told, so I think that was a turning point for him. He became detached." Brian also suffered mobility issues after undergoing several operations on his back and Al thinks being unable to move around properly affected his pal's mental health. He explained: "His infirmity must have been really depressing, not being able to walk again." However, Al is convinced Brian enjoyed his final tour despite his struggles before finally stepping out of the spotlight. He added: "He was with his adoptive family, and we all loved him, and he knew it, and he savored every moment. "Until he got on stage. And then he might decide: 'Well, I'm just gonna let them do it.' Who knows what was going through his mind, but he would check out on that last tour. "And that was hard work for him; he was fragile and tired and exhausted from probably that long-term COVID thing ... So, he became, on stage, not the entertainer that everyone thought they were coming to see." Brian's family confirmed the late star's passing earlier this week by posting a message on his official Instagram page. It read: "Our beloved father Brian Wilson has passed away. "We are at a loss for words right now. "Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world. Love and Mercy." The Beach Boys added in a statement: "The world mourns a genius today, and we grieve for the loss of our cousin, our friend, and our partner in a great musical adventure. "Brian Wilson wasn't just the heart of The Beach Boys—he was the soul of our sound. "The melodies he dreamed up and the emotions he poured into every note changed the course of music forever. His unparalleled talent and unique spirit created the soundtrack of so many lives around the globe, including our own. "Together, we gave the world the American dream of optimism, joy, and a sense of freedom—music that made people feel good, made them believe in summer and endless possibilities. "We are heartbroken by his passing. We will continue to cherish the timeless music we made together and the joy he brought to millions over the decades. "And while we will miss him deeply, his legacy will live on through his songs and in our memories. Our hearts go out to Brian's family and his loved ones during this difficult time."

David Beckham joins Hollywood stars Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet for King's charity awards

Don't miss out on the headlines from Royals. Followed categories will be added to My News. David Beckham was among a star-studded line-up at the King's Foundation annual awards ceremony where Hollywood A-listers including Meryl Streep and Kate Winslet shook hands with King Charles III. Beckham — who became ambassador for the foundation in 2024 — is tipped to be awarded a knighthood on June 14. More than 200 guests attended the annual event at St James Palace in London on Thursday which also celebrated the charity foundation's 35th anniversary. King Charles was joined by Princess Anne and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Edward and Sophie to mark the charity's milestone anniversary. Actor Stanley Tucci, model and wife of singer Rod Stewart, Penny Lancaster, and BBC presenter Alan Titchmarsh were also there to celebrate the work of those who have contributed to the charity's work across several sectors including education, sustainability, heritage, and environmental education. Beckham is tipped to be on the honours list for King Charles' Birthday Honours which will be announced on the King's 76th birthday which is officially celebrated by the Trooping the Colour event each year. The football legend — who was appointed an officer of the Order of the British Empire in 2003 — has long been popular with the royal family and has been involved in several charity initiatives organised by King Charles and Prince William. It's the second royal event Beckham, 50, has attended in recent times after being seen sharing a laugh with the King and Queen Camilla last month at the Chelsea Flower Show in support of the King's charity. The new honour would be further recognition of the former England football captain's sporting career and his contributions to British society.
