North Texas 7th grader qualifies for 2026 National Spanish Spelling Bee

CBS News24-07-2025
While many kids spend their summers relaxing by the pool or playing video games, one White Settlement ISD student has been mastering a second language—spelling her way to a national title.
Melody Hinkle, an incoming seventh grader at Brewer Middle School, won the National Spanish Spelling Bee Championship in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on July 12. She went head-to-head with 34 contestants from across the U.S. in a rigorous 24-round competition.
At 12 years old, Melody earned a $4,000 cash prize, a trophy, and an automatic qualification for the 2026 National Spanish Spelling Bee, where she'll have the chance to defend her title.
"We study about two hours a day, anywhere from 200 to 500 words," Melody said in an interview with CBS News Texas.
This is her fourth time qualifying for nationals—and after placing second in 2024, she returned this year more focused than ever.
"I was crying a lot. I was just really grateful I had the opportunity," she shared after her emotional win.
Melody is a product of White Settlement ISD's Dual Language Program, where students begin learning both English and Spanish as early as pre-kindergarten or kindergarten. The goal is to develop full proficiency in both languages through instruction in core subjects.
Her coach, Eva Valenzuela, the district's dual language coordinator, has worked with Melody since third grade.
"She analyzes a word, breaks it down. Some words she memorizes the definition, because it's important to know where the word comes from and how it's spelled," Valenzuela said.
Through dedication and discipline, Melody has grown from a curious competitor into a confident champion.
"On stage, I just try to keep a rhythm when I'm spelling the letters and go slow," Melody explained. "I think I'm the slowest speller, but that's OK. I just take deep breaths so I can calm myself before I spell."
After her win, Melody took one well-earned day off before returning to practice.
She plans to use her prize money for college and hopes to one day become a dual language teacher, inspiring the next generation just as her mentors inspired her.

Peralta allows 1 hit in 6 innings and Brewers beat Cubs 7-0 in 1st half of doubleheader

CHICAGO (AP) — Freddy Peralta allowed one hit and struck out six batters and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 7-0 in the first half of a Monday doubleheader. All-Star pitcher Peralta (15-5, 2.78 ERA) shut Chicago out over six innings to help Milwaukee advance to an MLB-best record of 79-45. The Brewers, which had their franchise-record 14-game winning streak snapped by the Reds on Sunday, have won 23 of 28 games since the break. Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin each had two hits, two RBIs and a solo home run to lead the way. Milwaukee's Abner Uribe, Jared Koenig and Grant Anderson held Chicago to one combined hit over the final three innings of relief. The Brewers attacked Cubs pitcher Cade Horton (7-4, 3.08) early. After Turang's homer in the third, Horton allowed three of the next four batters to reach base and was removed from the game with a blister on his right middle finger. Reliever Drew Pomeranz retired the ensuing batter to escape the inning with a one-run deficit. Chicago called up two hitters on Monday in Luke Little and Gavin Hollowell. Little's throwing error in the sixth allowed a run to score, while Hollowell gave up four earned runs on four walks and two hits in the seventh. Key moment Down 1-0, the Cubs had an opportunity to tie or take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Peralta walked three consecutive batters to load the bases with one out, but he struck out rookie Owen Caissie and retired Nico Hoerner to end the inning. Key stat Milwaukee surrendered just two hits to Chicago, which drops nine games behind the Brewers in the National League Central. Up next The Cubs and Brewers are set to play the second half of Monday's doubleheader at 7:05 p.m. CT. Neither team had named its starting pitcher. Chicago and Milwaukee will continue the series until Thursday. ___ AP MLB:

Texas Tech RB Quinten Joyner reportedly tears ACL, will miss season

Quinten Joyner's first season at Texas Tech will have to wait. Joyner tore his ACL on Monday, according to On3's Pete Nakos. While specifics of the injury are not known, he'll now miss the entire 2025 season recovering. Joyner transferred into Texas Tech this past offseason after spending his first two seasons at USC. He racked up 478 rushing yards and had four total touchdowns with the Trojans last season. The Texas native opted to move back to the state and join Texas Tech this fall, where he was expected to be a key piece of its offense. The Red Raiders, who opened at No. 23 in the AP preseason poll, will take on Arkansas-Pine Bluff in their season opener on Aug. 30. This post will be updated with more information shortly.
