Serving in new capacity
PETALING JAYA: There was a familiar face making waves at the China Open in Changzhou last week as former mixed doubles shuttler Tan Kian Meng took his first steps into the world of coaching.
Kian Meng, who retired in March after his final outing at the All-England with partner Lai Pei Jing, had initially planned to focus on product sales and reviews on online platforms.
He was hesitant to enter the coaching scene due to the stiff competition and the saturated badminton academy landscape in Malaysia.
But an unexpected opportunity came his way when he was invited to join Badminton England as a guest coach.
For the 2022 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, the offer was a golden opportunity to broaden his horizons and chart a new path following his retirement as a player.
'Actually, I see this as a great opportunity for me to learn. I've been with the England camp since last month after being invited to serve as a guest coach for a month.
'But now I've been assigned to accompany the players to several scheduled tournaments, and I feel this is a valuable experience for me,' said Kian Meng when contacted.
Kian Meng is currently working with mixed doubles pair Callum Hemming and Estelle Van Leeuwen, who are set to compete at the Macau Open this week. The duo will take on China's Hong Yili-Huang Kexin in the opening round.
Last week in Changzhou, Hemming-Van Leeuwen were knocked out in the first round by Denmark's Mads Vestergaard and Christine Busch.
Kian Meng is also coaching the world No. 14 men's doubles pair Ben Lane-Sean Vendy. He is expected to remain with the England team until the China Masters in September.
Kian Meng is not the first Malaysian to lend his expertise to Badminton England. The national body had previously enlisted former internationals Koo Kien Keat and Datuk Cheah Soon Kit as guest coaches to help develop their players.

Carter, who represented New Zealand in rugby sevens at the Paris Olympics and won a bronze with the squad at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, earned his first All Blacks call-up after his debut season with the Waikato Chiefs in Super Rugby. Carter said he was out for breakfast with his partner and some of his teammates from provincial side Bay of Plenty when Robertson called to confirm his selection on Monday. "I got an unknown-number call. I guess I thought if there was a day to answer those it was probably (that day) and he just said congratulations," said Carter. "I honestly can't really remember what else he said after that. I was pretty emotional and pretty stoked to get a phone call like that. ‘You have to earn the right to train with us': Newcastle freeze out Swedish striker Isak as transfer saga heats up
LONDON, Aug 7 — Alexander Isak's future at Newcastle hangs in the balance after the Swedish striker was reportedly told to train apart from the rest of the squad on Wednesday. The 25-year-old has been linked with a British transfer record move to Liverpool after failing to feature in Newcastle's pre-season preparations. Isak missed the Magpies' trip to Singapore and South Korea, citing a minor thigh injury, and instead flew to Spain to train at former club Real Sociedad. He has since returned to Tyneside but Sky Sports reported that Isak was instructed to train after the rest of the squad had departed on Wednesday. 'You have to earn the right to train with us. We are Newcastle United,' Howe told reporters earlier in pre-season. 'We will make sure that any player earns the right to train with the group. No player can expect to act poorly and train with the group as normal.' Liverpool have seen a £110 million (US$146 million) bid for Isak rejected, according to reports, with Newcastle seeking closer to £150 million. Another major hurdle to any deal is Newcastle's ongoing struggles to finalise a deal to replace Isak. They face competition from Manchester United for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko after missing out on Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Liam Delap earlier in the window. Liverpool have already splashed out over £250 million this window on Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong. Immigration FC eyes Darulaman Stadium as Super League home
ALOR STAR: Immigration FC (IFC) is eyeing the iconic Darulaman Stadium as its home ground for the upcoming Super League season in a bid to bring top-tier football closer to fans in the northern region. The team, which falls under the Home Ministry's purview, will be based in the north to offer supporters in Kedah and Perlis the opportunity to back a Super League side on home turf, said Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. Saifuddin said IFC, one of two teams under the ministry set to feature in the Super League next season, began intensive training in July, with Kedah chosen as the team's preparation base. "There are already many teams in the Klang Valley. But in the north, Perlis and Kedah — once dominant forces in Malaysian football — are no longer in the Super League. That's why we're stationing IFC here," he said during a press conference at the Raia Hotel and Convention Centre yesterday. "This gives northern football fans a new option, a Super League team they can follow much closer to them." For now, IFC will play home matches at Batu Kawan Stadium in Penang, pending approval to use Darulaman Stadium. The team will train at the Muda Agriculture Development Authority (Mada) headquarters stadium in Alor Star. Saifuddin said the Datuk Sheikh Ahmad Stadium in Arau is also being considered once upgrade works are completed in the coming months. "We've submitted our application and are waiting for a response... The best is if we can get Darulaman, we plan to lease the stadium for a whole season," he said. "This is good income for the stadium as Super League matches are played at night, while A1 League matches are held in the afternoon, so there should be no scheduling conflicts." Darulaman Stadium is currently the home ground of the Kedah Football Association (KFA), which competes in the A1 Semi-Pro League. On IFC's prospects, Saifuddin expressed confidence that the squad, comprising seasoned local players and international imports, could be competitive in its debut season. He said he told the head coach, Yusri Che Lah, to focus on building the team and not worry about lofty goals. "Of course, I whispered, 'Top four.' He replied, 'Let's aim for top five,'" he quipped. Saifuddin added that several corporate sponsors had also come on board with strong support for the team this season.
