Blackburn Rovers boss' strong verdict on two refereeing decisions

Yahoo3 days ago
Valerien Ismael felt Blackburn Rovers should've had a stonewall penalty after losing 1-0 at West Brom.
Isaac Price's first-half goal proved decisive in a tight game at the Hawthorns. Rovers dominated large portions of the game with possession but they didn't create enough clear-cut chances.
One moment of controversy was a potential penalty they could've had in the first half. Yuki Ohashi went down after tangling with Torbjorn Heggem but the referee, David Webb, didn't give anything.
Ismael felt it was a definite spot-kick and thinks there would've been few complaints from West Brom if it had been awarded.

"Yes, 100%," Ismael said.
"If you see how the referee gave the fouls through the middle of the pitch, or even after that, it's a penalty. If you blew for a penalty, nobody would complain.
"It is what it is. I spoke with him (referee) briefly after the game, so he gave his view. We cannot change anything, but it is what it is. We have to accept and we move on."
Ismael also felt that Rovers might've had a free-kick in the build-up to Price's goal but conceded that they should have defended better.
"I think it's a 50-50 call. I think that you concede a goal that you can concede in the Championship," he said.
"If you don't concede it, it's a free kick for us, it's the right decision as well. But I think that we have to defend better. It's simple like that and you have no discussion."
On the performance, he added: "I think it was a good away game from us but not the result.
"We had a lot of new faces in the team. The players arrived this week, so it was a bit hectic and chaotic.
"I think that throughout the 90 minutes, we were really solid. Second half, much, much better. I think that you saw at the beginning, everyone was a little bit nervous. They didn't know what to expect.
"So that's why I think it was a good away game. We conceded a goal on a set-piece which is a goal you can concede in the Championship.
"Otherwise, I think that's what we have to work on now. It's again, when I came last season, it's our work in the final third.
I think we should be doing better with the last pass, the last cross. We need more quality. We didn't really test the goalkeeper; we need to shoot on target more.
"Those things we must work on but I was pleased with the performance. But the result is disappointing."

Barcelona star left in limbo as he waits to discover if Catalan club will look to sell him before summer transfer deadline

Pena's future is uncertain due to a transfer logjam His departure depends on Szczesny Pena may be forced to wait until the end of the transfer window Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱 WHAT HAPPENED? Pena is in a state of uncertainty as he awaits a decision on his future ahead of the transfer deadline. According to a report from Football Espana, the Spaniard's potential departure is contingent on the club's ability to officially register Wojciech Szczesny as a La Liga player, with missing paperwork causing a final blockage. The situation is complicated by the recent arrival of Joan Garcia as the new first-choice goalkeeper. THE BIGGER PICTURE Pena's desire to leave Barcelona stems from his demotion in the pecking order. He was dropped by Hansi Flick in favour of Szczesny earlier in 2025, and the subsequent signing of Joan Garcia has further reduced his chances of playing time. While Marc-Andre ter Stegen has resolved his issue with the club over releasing his medical reports, which allowed Garcia to be registered, he remains ahead of Pena in the long-term plans once he returns from injury. Pena has received two offers from Turkish clubs, and Italian side Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas, have also shown interest. However, delays from Barcelona have reportedly led Como to consider other options. DID YOU KNOW? Pena had a brief loan spell at Galatasaray in 2022, where he famously impressed in a Europa League last-16 tie against his parent club, Barcelona. WHAT NEXT FOR INAKI PENA? Pena's immediate future hinges on the finalising of Szczesny's registration. If the Polish goalkeeper is registered, Pena will likely be granted permission to leave before the transfer window closes on September 1. He may need to wait until the final days to secure a move away from the club. Until then, he will remain with the squad and could feature on the bench, as he did in Barcelona's opening-day victory at Mallorca.

Leeds United continued discussions with Noah Okafor over the weekend, talks expected to continue this week

Leeds United opened talks with AC Milan attacker Noah Okafor last week and discussions continued between both parties over the weekend, according to journalist and transfer insider Ben Jacobs. Leeds want one more attacking addition as manager Daniel Farke looks to keep the Elland Road club up following promotion. The Switzerland international is a serious transfer target for the Whites, and talks are expected to continue between Leeds and his camp this week. They have yet to reach an agreement with Milan, but that is unlikely to be an issue as Okafor is not in their plans. The 25-year-old Leeds target spent the second half of last season on loan with Napoli, winning the Serie A title with them. An option of a permanent transfer was included in the deal but Napoli opted against activating it as manager Antonio Conte played him just four times. The Whites are now looking to bring him to the Premier League as they prepare for life back in the top-flight, and it appears he is open to the move. Okafor has nothing else to prove in the Italian top-flight having won the title after two seasons, and moving to England has always appealed to plenty of professional footballers. He will fancy his chances of playing regularly at Leeds given his versatility, quality and experience. Farke is convinced that the Swiss has what it takes to improve his attack. The West Yorkshire club kicks off their campaign tonight when they host Everton in their opening Premier League game of 2025-26, and they will be desperate to begin the season with a win. Leeds have bolstered their attack with the additions of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha so far this summer. They need more quality options in the final third to boost their survival chances, and signing Okafor will come in handy.
