Heading for the Olympic Club: Five First Coast players are in the U.S. Amateur field
That includes Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach and Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island, who went deep at the Junior Amateur and were already exempt from qualifying for the U.S. Am.
Mawhinney is seeking a second USGA national championship. He and Will Hartman, who will be teammates at Vanderbilt in 2026, won the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball in New Jersey in May.
Four other area players are in the field through local qualifying: Carson Brewer and Ryan Nicholson of Ponte Vedra Beach, Ryan Gear of St. Augustine and Luke Balaskiewicz of Jacksonville.
The U.S. Amateur was last at the Olympic Club in 2007, when future PGA Tour players locked up in the championship match. Colt Knost defeated Michael Thompson 2 and 1.

Deerwood, Travis Fulton Golf partner
The Deerwood Country Club announced a partnership with Travis Fulton Golf and will bring Fulton's "brand and visibility," according to a news release, to the Southside private club.
Deerwood members will benefit from a year-round platform of private instruction, clinics, junior development, women's programs and golf schools. The program, which begins on Aug. 1, is tailored to a private club membership.
Travis Fulton Golf has studios in Ponte Vedra and downtown Jacksonville, as well as the Forescore sports bar on Gate Parkway. Fulton was with Golf Channel, where he was the instructional host for programs such as 'On The Range' and 'Morning Drive." He is a regular contributor to Golf Digest and PGA Tour Entertainment.

Oklahoma's Jase Summy wins Western Amateur in record fashion, earns likely Walker Cup spot
There wasn't much doubt before the Western Amateur, but Jase Summy made sure he's going to be on the U.S. Walker Cup team next month at Cypress Point in California. Summy, a rising senior at Oklahoma, won a Bedlam final Saturday at Skokie Country Club outside of Chicago, topping Oklahoma State rising junior Ethan Fang 6-and-5 to win the Western Amateur. Summy, ranked ninth in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, took down the world's third-ranked amateur, who earlier this summer won the British Amateur and is already on the Walker Cup team. While the win didn't officially give Summy a spot on the team, he's a shoo-in to be selected after the conclusion of the U.S. Amateur, which begins Monday, Aug. 11 at Olympic Club in San Francisco. 'This is the biggest win of my life – by far,' Summy said. 'I knew my game was there, but I hadn't quite broken through. Today, I did.' 'That was definitely the biggest crowd I've played in front of. My game had been trending well. It was just about execution. I felt confident coming in, and that carried through the week.' Summy's win was the largest margin of victory in the history of the championship, and he also earned an exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour's 2026 NV5 Invitational. He won the second and third holes, and while Fang won the sixth to get back to 1 down, Summy dominated from there. He won Nos. 8-10 and then 12-13 to close out the match. Summy became the first Sooner to win the Western Amateur since Charlie Coe in 1950. And now, Summy turns his attention to the U.S. Amateur, with an all-but-likely invitation to the Walker Cup team waiting come the conclusion of the biggest amateur event in the world.

Jess Fishlock scored her second goal of the season and the Seattle Reign beat Angel City 2-0 on Friday night as the National Women's Soccer League resumed play after its annual summer break. Elsewhere in the NWSL, the Kansas City Current beat Racing Louisville 2-0, and the Chicago Stars tied Gotham FC 1-1. Fishlock broke a scoreless deadlock at Lumen Field in Seattle when she scored on a rebound from the center of the box in the 66th minute.
