Visakhapatnam: The deputy commissioner of the endowments department has launched an inquiry into alleged mismanagement of silver ornaments at Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi Temple in One Town.
At the center of the controversy is a 60-kilo silver backdrop affixed behind the idol of Goddess Kanaka Mahalakshmi — now a flashpoint in temple administration.
The temple draws nearly four lakh devotees during Margasira Maasotsavaalu, with pilgrims arriving from North Andhra, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Telangana. Thursdays in that month are considered especially auspicious.
The issue surfaced after a donor alerted the temple management via letter, claiming that the old 34-kilo silver cover — promised to him after he donated a new one in 2021–22 — was never handed over.
He alleged that despite assurances, not a single gram of silver was returned.
Temple sources say donors typically receive receipts for contributions, whether in cash or precious metals. However, in this case, no receipt was issued for the 60-kilo silver cover, despite staff acknowledging the donor's identity. The administration maintains that a receipt is issued only for direct donations—not exchanges.
According to a higher official in the endowment department, the temple should take written permission from the commissioner of the department if any exchange of silver or gold or anything is to take place.

The present executive officer, Sobha Rani, requested all EOs who worked before her to provide the silver accounts as there were no accounts of silver. The former EOs of the temple, Jyothi Madhavi, Kalingiri Santi, Sirisha, and others, came and submitted the accounts. Meanwhile, the Jewellery Verification Officer conducted an inquiry.
When contacted, the deputy commissioner of the endowment department, Sujata, told TOI that she is conducting the inquiry on the orders of the Commissioner. She would submit the report on the issue. There is no time bound for the inquiry, but she would submit the report as early as possible.
