'I was waiting for them' — Daughter's grief after parents injured in toll plaza crash

SUNGAI BULOH: A woman's routine afternoon turned into heartbreak when her parents were seriously injured in a collision involving their motorcycle and a Nissan Navara pickup truck at the Duta Toll Plaza on Saturday.
Farah Natasya Faizal said the incident occurred shortly after she received a WhatsApp message from her mother at 2.54pm, informing her that they were nearing the Duta Toll Plaza, Buletin Utama reported.
Her parents were travelling from Alor Star to Kampung Baru with a cousin.
"I had just finished showering and replied immediately.
"I was ready to go down and meet them because we live in a condominium, so I needed to wait downstairs.
"But when I saw the heavy rain, I started to feel uneasy," she said.
After several messages went unanswered, she grew anxious and tried calling her mother, only for the call to be answered by her cousin, who informed her that her parents had been involved in an accident.
Farah said that upon arriving at the scene, she witnessed the heartbreaking sight of her father lying on the road and her mother semi-conscious inside the ambulance.
"I called out to mum after the accident, she responded, but didn't open her eyes or speak.
"I followed her to the hospital.
"Once we arrived, she stopped responding entirely. Even her finger barely moved," she said tearfully.
She said her father was undergoing surgery after being admitted to the Yellow Zone at Sungai Buloh Hospital.
"I've never gone a day without speaking to my mother. Now when I call her and she doesn't respond, I feel empty," Farah said.
Unable to bring herself to watch the crash footage, Farah nevertheless insists that the driver of the Nissan Navara be held fully accountable.
The victims' family is cooperating with police investigations and hopes the driver will face appropriate punishment.
It was reported that a motorcyclist and his wife were injured after being thrown off their motorcycle when a pickup truck struck them on the North-South Expressway, an incident that has since gone viral on social media.
The incident was captured in a video and uploaded by the Facebook page DashCam Malaysia.
The driver of the Nissan Navara, a 32-year-old man, was unhurt in the incident and has since lodged a police report.
A remand order was obtained, and the suspect is currently being held at the Dang Wangi lock-up to assist investigations.
The driver, who is expected to be charged tomorrow, is facing a charge of reckless and dangerous driving under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
The offence carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine of RM5,000 to RM15,000, and a minimum five-year driving ban.
Police are also looking into claims that the suspect was racing with other pickup trucks.
