TikTok to invest $8.8 billion in Thailand over five years

Al Arabiya28-02-2025

TikTok plans to invest $8.8 billion in Thailand over the next five years, focusing on digital infrastructure, workforce development, and online safety initiatives, a senior executive said Friday after talks with the government.
The social media platform owned by China's ByteDance is the latest in a string of big tech names to announce major spending projects in the kingdom, after Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.
Helena Lersch, TikTok's vice president of public policy, met Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in Bangkok on Friday to discuss the expansion.
'We are here today to announce the $8.8 billion,' Lersch told the PM in public remarks at the start of their meeting.
Paetongtarn hailed the investment in Thailand's digital infrastructure and AI development as a major opportunity for the country.
The investment includes training programs for businesses and creators, anti-fraud campaigns, and a new data hosting service to enhance local cloud capabilities.
It is not clear whether the cash includes a $3.8 billion investment from TikTok approved by Thailand's Board of Investment in late January.
The Thai move comes as TikTok faces being banned in the United States over national security concerns about the data it gathers on users.
The popular video-sharing app briefly went dark on January 18 and disappeared from app stores, to the dismay of millions of users.
Thailand, Southeast Asia's second-biggest economy, has lagged Singapore and Indonesia in the tech sector, and the government has made a concerted push to attract US giants as it seeks to make up lost ground.
Governments across the region are vying for US tech dollars, with Vietnam making a major drive to move up the value chain from a hub for producing shoes, clothes, and furniture.
'The government is delighted that TikTok has chosen Thailand as a strategic investment partner for digital infrastructure, including a 300 billion baht ($8.8 billion) Data Hosting project,' Paetongtarn posted on X.
'All of this represents a crucial step toward positioning Thailand as a global hub for the digital industry.'

TikTok rolls out AI-powered tools to turn text into video ads

LONDON: TikTok is rolling out new advertising tools powered by artificial intelligence that give marketers the ability to turn text or still images into AI-generated video ads. The ByteDance-owned platform announced the new features on Monday during the Cannes Lions advertising festival in France. The features, part of TikTok's Symphony product suite, allow advertisers to upload an image or write a text prompt describing their desired ad. TikTok's AI then generates five-second video clips that can be used as advertisements. The text and image-to-video features build on similar AI-powered services introduced by TikTok in 2024, which allow marketers to use AI-generated avatars — AI-enhanced digital spokespeople — to promote and sell products on the platform. AI-generated ads are the latest frontier for social media platforms, which have been investing heavily in AI to automate processes such as content moderation, misinformation detection, and content creation for advertisers and creators seeking more cost-effective ways to produce material for social media. With such tools, platforms hope to attract marketers to expand their advertising budgets. Recently, Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta announced it was testing new tools that allow advertisers to create marketing content, including images and messaging, using generative AI prompts.

TikTok Says to Increase Investment in Britain

TikTok plans to raise its investment in the UK, its biggest community in Europe, with the creation of 500 more jobs, the Chinese-owned social media giant announced Monday. The news coincided with the start of London's Tech Week, which sees British Prime Minister Keir Starmer welcoming some of sector's biggest firms. "TikTok's UK workforce will grow to 3,000 this year with the addition of more than 500 jobs," the company said in a statement. It added that it was investing in a new London office, set to open next year, and whose size will dwarf its current UK head office. It will take TikTok's investment in UK infrastructure to around £140 million ($190 million), the group said. Around half the UK population, more than 30 million people, use TikTok each month, making it the platform's "largest user-community in Europe", the statement added. "Whether through direct investment in jobs and innovation, or the wider economic contribution from millions of British businesses on TikTok, we're pleased to be increasing our investment and presence here in the UK," said Adam Presser, director of TikTok UK and global head of operations and trust and safety. TikTok has been in the crosshairs of Western governments for years over fears personal data could be used by China for espionage or propaganda purposes. "What underpins our continued growth is our deep commitment to safety and to creating an enjoyable and secure digital space to sustainably support creators, entrepreneurs and the wider economy, which is why we also invest significantly in safety," Presser added Monday.
