'Butter': the foodie feminist bestseller skewering sexism in Japan
Translated into English last year, the tale of murder and misogyny has whetted an insatiable appetite, selling 610,000 copies overseas, including 400,000 in Britain -- more than Japan -- where it won multiple awards.
Yuzuki was inspired by the real-life story of "Black Widow" Kanae Kijima, a woman sentenced to death in 2012 for poisoning three men she met on dating sites.
The sensationalised media coverage at the time largely focused on Kijima's appearance, speculating how someone described as homely and unattractive could be considered a femme fatale.
Many credited her romantic success to her homemaking prowess -- notably in the kitchen.
"When the case broke, the Japanese media mainly remembered that the suspect liked to cook and took classes ... to 'please men'," Yuzuki told AFP in an interview.
"That deeply disturbed me."
In "Butter", a journalist likewise disquieted by the portrayal of a Kijima-like character (renamed Kajii) writes to the jailed suspect, hoping to secure an exclusive interview by appealing to her gourmet tastes.
Via a letter soliciting the beef stew recipe that Kajii reportedly fed her final victim, the pair begin an intimate and life-changing relationship.
This proves a vehicle for Yuzuki to chew over the roots of misogyny in Japan, where traditional male and female roles still dominate and women are held to impossible beauty standards.
In politics and boardrooms for example, women remain rare. Japan ranks 118 out of 146 in the World Economic Forum's 2025 Gender Gap Report.
"Japan is a deeply patriarchal country. Very often, it is the father who occupies the central position within the family unit. This is the basis for laws even," Yuzuki said.
- 'Fatphobia' -
Food -- particularly butter, that artery-blocking symbol of pleasure and excess -- forms the molten core of the story.
Through sumptuous descriptions of butter-rich ramen and lavishly buttered rice, Yuzuki explores the tension between indulging appetites and the self-denial required to fulfil the societal pressure on women to stay thin.
"There is an incredible amount of adverts for weight loss, cosmetic surgery and diets. This country is obsessed with fatphobia," Yuzuki said.
It is also tough for women in Japan, where the #MeToo movement never really took off, to speak out about discrimination and sexual assault.
Shiori Ito, a journalist who took the rare step of publicly accusing a prominent Japanese TV reporter of rape -- a charge he denies -- is a case in point.
Ito's documentary "Black Box Diaries", which was nominated for an Oscar, was not released in Japan because it used material recorded clandestinely or intended for judicial use only.
"In other countries, especially the United States, from the beginning of #MeToo, many well-known journalists have seriously investigated these cases, and it is because this information was made public officially that the victims were able to be protected," Yuzuki said.
But in Japan, "women who have had the courage to speak out are reduced to the role of activists and consumed by the media within that framework," she said.
Another example is Masahiro Nakai, a boyband member and a star TV presenter accused of sexual assault. He initially disputed the facts and then apologised.
The scandal shone a spotlight on the toxic culture of young women being pressed into attending dinners and drinking parties with powerful figures.
"What strikes me is this uninterrupted chain of sexual violence, and especially that these are crimes committed within one organisation, covered up by another organisation... that of the media," Yuzuki said.
Yuzuki is convinced that change can only come from outside.
"When foreigners take up a topic, especially the English-language media, it completely changes the way it is perceived in Japan," she said.
"If the European media" continue to be interested in these issues, then "the situation could perhaps change a little."

‘Monster Island' Feels Like a ‘Predator' Movie Set During World War II
Near the end of World War II, a ship carrying POWs captured by Japan comes under attack. Somehow, despite being shackled together at the ankles, two prisoners manage to swim to a nearby island. Saito (Dean Fujioka) is Japanese, and Bronson (Callum Woodhouse) is British, which means they obviously clash at first. But survival requires them to work together—especially when they realize the island is… well, the movie's called Monster Island, so you know what's coming. With just enough backstory for these characters—the sensitive Saito has been branded a traitor, while the more brash Bronson is a known escape artist—and performances that quickly flesh them out into people who feel real despite the rather unreal circumstances they find themselves in, Monster Island clearly establishes what's at stake from the start. We like these guys, who go from trying to punch each other's lights out to realizing they make a good team pretty quickly. There's a language barrier, but the film gets around that by implying that Saito and Bronson have sort of an intuitive understanding. What they're trying to say to each other is mostly variations on 'Hey, let's do this' anyway, especially when a couple of fellow survivors stumble onto their beach, including Japanese officers still brandishing weapons. Seeing as how both soldiers have recently escaped from prison, they're in no hurry to be recaptured—but those worries are soon replaced by a much more vicious problem when the thing we've been sensing has been watching them makes its presence fully known. There's an almost Predator feeling to the build-up. We get stealth POV shots, a distinctive sound cue whenever the creature is lurking, and very early on we see a scaly arm try to grab Bronson. While the island is full of thick jungle, sheer cliffs, spiky trees, and at least one enormous alligator, its greatest threat is something far more cryptid in nature—or even mythological, as one of the men with the officers shrieks in fright as he realizes it's 'Orang Ikan!' Orang Ikan happens to be Monster Island's original title—clearly it was changed to be more universal, since many Shudder viewers likely aren't familiar with figures from Malay folklore. But a more recognizable touchstone stateside is another one of writer-director Mike Wiluan's acknowledged inspirations: The Creature From the Black Lagoon, which the Orang Ikan strongly resembles. The story setup is similar, too, as outsiders barge into an isolated habitat and disrupt the natural order of things, infuriating the resident monster holding down the top of the food chain. Just imagine the Gill-Man with many more razor-sharp teeth and claws, plus a spine-tingling vocalization, somewhere between a shriek and a wail, that echoes across the landscape. The war Saito and Bronson left behind was hell, but their new foe is just as gruesome. And once Monster Island rips the bandage off with its creature reveal, which happens early on, the monster fully becomes the third main character. There's no hiding in the shadows; we see it from head to toe and are made well aware of its violent power. The suit work and attendant special effects are fantastic, as the Orang Ikan chases the men around a wild environment that'd be treacherous even without a territorial sea monster. The terrors of the plot are further enhanced by the looming specter of war, which haunts both soldiers and has also left wreckage and other debris upon the island, letting us know this isn't the first time the creature has tangled with unwanted visitors. And while the Orang Ikan clearly the antagonist here, Monster Island also makes room to show us why it's behaving with such aggression—for reasons the viewer will certainly sympathize with, even if Saito and Bronson don't as they fight for their lives. At just over 80 minutes, Monster Island offers a fast-paced race to the end. You almost wish there wasn't a coda that contains flashbacks to scenes we just saw, but it also gives a conclusion that's both satisfying and leaves the potential for more. And for what it's worth, Return to Monster Island is definitely something we'd be interested in after this first visit. Monster Island streams on Shudder starting July 25. Want more io9 news? Korean media is still taking Netflix by storm as KPop Demon Hunters and Squid Game led the service from July 7 to 13. The most-watched title on the platform last week, KPop Demon Hunters racked up 24.2M views to put it back atop the English films list. Speaking of, both prior installments were also back on the weekly Top 10 list as well. It was quite a quiet week on the English TV side of things, with Season 2 of The Sandman taking the top spot. The episodes, which premiered on July 3, amassed 5.9M views in its first full week. This is a decline for the series, considering Season 1 finished its second week of availability with around 11.5M views. However, by the third week, the series was sitting at a similar benchmark. The Sandman is ending with Season 2, marking a solid run for the comic adaptation, which ahead of the second season became embroiled sexual assault and misconduct allegations against Neil Gaiman, who created the comic on which the series is based and developed and executive produces the Netflix series. Gaiman has denied the allegations. Kevin Williamson's The Waterfront stuck around in second place this week, and the CW drama Sullivan's Crossing took third. The Canadian series has, like many other series, found new life on Netflix after the first two seasons were made available on July 8. The series managed about 3M views last week, which is pretty strong given that the series is not available globally, only in the U.S. and Canada. Season 3 is currently airing on the CW, so it will be interesting to see whether this impacts its linear performance at all. The new season is set to land on Netflix in August. In the world of live events, Netflix aired yet another match up between professional boxers Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano on Friday. Data from VideoAmp, released by the streamer, said that about 6M viewers tuned in globally during the main event, though Netflix has the fight ranked at No. 5 with 2.8M views. The best explanation for this discrepancy is that the streamer uses total streaming time divided by runtime to report viewership, which does not effectively account for co-viewing. Co-viewing is incredibly common, especially for live events as audiences typically gather to watch together, so the VideoAmp data probably gives a better idea of just how many people were tuned in for this one. Notably missing from last week's Top 10 is Lena Dunham's latest comedy series Too Much. The 10-episode series starring Megan Stalter premiered on July 10, so it is still in its early days. Its absence from the rankings suggest it pulled in around or under 2M views in its first few days on Netflix, given that was the tally for No. 10's Ms. Rachel.
