Vehicles used by HM Queen Elizabeth II will be showcased at Toronto Distillery District this weekend
Land Rover Classic has curated a collection of the HM Queen Elizabeth II's state and personal fleet to celebrate the Queen's history with the automaker. Officials say five Royal vehicles will be displayed for the public at Toronto Distillery District this weekend, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The display is a tribute to the long history between the Royal Family and Jaguar Land Rover as an official supplier of vehicles to the Royals since 1948, when King George VI choose an original model Land Rover for state and personal use.

TIFF to debut Netflix's buzzy Knives Out sequel starring Daniel Craig
The curious case of where the highly anticipated third chapter in Rian Johnson's hit whodunnit series, Knives Out, will premiere has been cracked. On Wednesday, organizers from the Toronto International Film Festival revealed that Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery will make its world premiere in the city this September. The sequel, which stars Daniel Craig as master detective Benoit Blanc, was widely expected to debut at TIFF, given that the first two films in Johnson's franchise – 2019's Knives Out and 2022's Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery – both premiered in Toronto. The festival also previously played host to Johnson's 2008 caper comedy The Brothers Bloom and his sci-fi thriller Looper, which opened the festival in 2012. Slated for a December release on Netflix, Wake Up Dead Man will likely bring a bevy of stars to Toronto. In addition to Craig, the new film features Josh Brolin, Glenn Close, Jeremy Renner, Andrew Scott, Kerry Washington, Josh O'Connor and Mila Kunis, to name just a few. But those celebrities will have to compete for attention with the stars of the 10 other Gala and Special Presentation titles announced by TIFF on Wednesday. Highlights include the world premiere of Nicholas Hytner's First World War dramedy The Choral, starring Ralph Fiennes; the Canadian premiere of Chloé Zhao's historical drama Hamnet, which stars Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare and Jessie Buckley as his wife Agnes; the world premiere of Derek Cianfrance's comedy Roofman, starring Channing Tatum as an escaped convict; and Paul Greengrass's docudrama The Lost Bus starring Matthew McConaughey as a bus driver who must ferry children away from a raging California wildfire. Brendan Fraser, another familiar face to TIFF audiences, will make an appearance for the world premiere of the Tokyo-set dramedy Rental Family. The star memorably won over Toronto audiences in 2022 with his dark character drama The Whale. After previously announcing the world premiere of Canadian comedy Mile End Kicks by Chandler Levack, TIFF added to its homegrown lineup by slotting the world premiere of Clement Virgo's Steal Away. The Belgium-shot psychological thriller, which stars Angourie Rice and Lauren Lee Smith, is Virgo's follow-up to his acclaimed drama Brother, which debuted at TIFF in 2022 before going on to win a then-record 12 Canadian Screen Awards. The remaining titles announced Wednesday include the North American premiere of Neeraj Ghaywan's Hindi-language drama Homebound; the North American premiere of French director Rebecca Zlotowski's Cannes-certified drama A Private Life, starring Jodie Foster; the North American premiere of Peter Chan's Shanghai-set period piece She's Got No Name, which premiered in Cannes back in 2024; and the world premiere of Franz, a Kafka biopic directed by Agnieszka Holland, who was at TIFF in 2023 with her acclaimed geopolitical docudrama Green Border. TIFF's 50th edition runs Sept. 4 through 14; the remaining titles for this year's festival will be announced over the next two weeks.

Behind the scenes of Disney's The Lion King in Edmonton
Disney's The Lion King uses around 230 puppets and puppet replacements in their show tours. That's one and a half semi-trucks full of puppets. July 16, 2025. (Evan Klippenstein/CTV News Edmonton) A classic Disney film turned stage production is well underway in Edmonton, and cast and crew are inviting audiences to bask in the mechanics of the magic. The Lion King performances at the Northern Alberta Jubilee auditorium began last Wednesday and run eight times a week through July 27. Part of its charm is the vast array of detailed puppets on stage that help bring the show to life. The show is designed in a way where it's often visible to the audience who's pulling the levers. Drew Hirshfield Drew Hirshfield plays Zazu on stage, which he said requires a lot of shoulder strength. July 16, 2025. (Evan Klippenstein/CTV News Edmonton) Drew Hirshfield is the man behind the puppet of Zazu, the show's uptight hornbill who often flanks King Mufasa and later Simba. He appears on stage dressed in a blue wool suit with a painted blue and white face while he operates Zazu's puppet with his hands. 'That's sort of the magic of this theatrical event,' Hirshfield said. 'There's me, the human actor, but then there's also this amazing puppet that clearly represents a bird, and then the two of us together create this dual event.' His right thumb, for example, articulates movement of Zazu's eyelids. His left hand supports the body and wings so Zazu can 'fly through the Pride Lands as needed.' Hirshfield credits people like puppet supervisor for Broadway Across Canada, Michael Reilly, for making the artistry a reality. 'They maintain the intricacies of this puppet and many more … we couldn't tell the story without them,' he said. One and a half of those trucks, he said, are filled with the 230 puppets and puppet replacements needed to make the show go on. 'We have everything from as small as a mouse to as big as a full size elephant,' he said. The puppets were designed and created by Julie Taymor and Michael Curry. While they may look like wood, they're really carbon fiber. Reilly said a lot of trial and error went into ensuring the puppets were operable by actors with as few incidents as possible. Part of Reilly's job is also to keep the puppets prepped and ready to go, even during the normal bangs and scrapes of live showtime. 'If you're doing your job well, no one notices,' he said. He said when there is a mistake, though, the audience tends to laugh with the actors, not at them. 'Otherwise, [the puppets] just sit here and look very pretty on a table,' he said. The production is North America's longest-running and most-attended Broadway tour with more than 10,000 performances in over 90 cities.
