GHMC halts new cellar excavations from May 30
HYDERABAD: In view of the monsoon setting in, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will not allow any new cellar excavations from May 30, 2025, until the end of the season.
For cellars already excavated, notices will be served to builders and site owners, instructing them to implement standard precautionary measures, including soil strengthening, construction of retaining walls, proper barricading, and prevention of water stagnation. Officials have also been directed to complete the survey and take action in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
A review meeting in this regard was held on Thursday by GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan and Chief City Planner Srinivas with Town Planning officials from the head office, zonal offices and circle offices.
428 dilapidated structures identified
According to GHMC officials, 428 dilapidated structures and 62 cellar excavations have been identified so far. Of the 428 structures, action such as repairs or vacation has been completed for 131. The remaining 297 structures are under follow-up, including issuance of notices, assessment of structural safety and counselling of owners for vacation.

KANNIYAKUMARI: Shoreline protection activities have been intensified a day after a container, from the vessel MSC Elsa III vessel that sank 38 kilometres off the Kochi coast last Sunday, washed ashore at the Vaniyakudi beach in the district on Thursday morning. A team of senior officials from several departments, including the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), oversaw the recovery of the container and the removal of debris, as part of the shore cleaning activities on Friday. Volunteers from various agencies, including MSC Marine Engineering Resources Centre (MERC) in Porbandar, Gujarat, were involved. Eight Navy officers, led by a commander, joined the recovery efforts, while officials from the Gujarat Marine Police took part in a consultation meeting with Kanniyakumari collector Alagumeena. Incidentally, teak wood logs and raw cashews, among other products washed ashore at Chinnavilai in Kanniyakumari coast on Friday, resulting in people gathering along the shore to collect cashews. Sources said various kinds of cargo, including large quantities of nurdles (tiny microplastics), wooden logs, cast iron rods and bags of cashew nuts, have been washing up on the shores between Neerodi and Kadiyapattinam fishing hamlets for the past four days. Seeking cooperation from the public, the collector urged them not to handle the nurdles. The district administration has taken precautionary measures as per the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) issued by Kerala state disaster management department.

Expedite drainage works ahead of monsoon: GHMC chief
Hyderabad: As a part of monsoon preparedness, GHMC Commissioner RV Karnan on Friday instructed officials to expedite drain works promptly ensuring the public experiences no inconvenience. He inspected drain works in the Santoshnagar Circle, Charminar zone. He was accompanied by Yakutpura MLA Jaffar Hussain Meraj, MLC Mirza Riaz-ul-Hasan Effendi and officers from different departments. The main purpose of the inspection was to tackle overflow issues caused by interconnected nalas and sewage lines. The officials inspected Maula Ka Chilla, Ganganagar nala and others. Proposals are being prepared to submit to the corporation. The aim is to resolve overflow issue, particularly at Rangeeli Khidki, near Rahmania Madarsa. Jaffar Hussain detailed the challenges the residents of colonies experience due to the drains. EE BL Srinivas informed the commissioner that repair to Ganganagar nala was 70 per cent completed. Karnan instructed the project officer to expedite the work as soon as possible. As the water pipeline runs parallel to both sides of the Ganganagar nala, the GHMC maintenance engineering wing, along with the Water Board officials, has been directed to collaborate on its cleaning. The necessity for building a drainage canal from Jahangir Nagar Colony to Maula Ka Chilla nala was communicated to the commissioner; engineering officials were tasked with drafting proposals. During the visit they discussed the upcoming Moharram routes and maintenance of Ashurkhaanas. Karnan souoght proposals, assuring immediate sanction of work to ensure all preparations are in place.
