Schoolgirl almost chokes to death twice during 3 year NHS wait for operation
A 12-year-old girl is having to wait three years for an operation despite choking twice and in "agony" due to a throat condition.
Lauren Crome has been suffering from bouts of severe tonsillitis since she was three years old, having up to seven episodes a year. She has missed weeks of school at a time and has had to abandon her dream of becoming an Olympic swimmer because she is so poorly and cannot risk infection.
Last year she was finally referred to the Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) department at Glasgow's Royal Hospital for Children where her parents were told there was a waiting list for treatment of 18 months. But a year later that waiting list for day surgery has risen to three years.
Lauren's dad Stephen and mum Kellie have now been left living in fear. Stephen, 39, a charge nurse on an alcohol and drug recovery ward, said: 'Near enough every time the schools come back from a break she comes down with it. Last April she saw an ENT specialist who said he saw what they think are polyps on her tonsils.
"She literally can't speak for two weeks, she is in agony and she has choked a couple of times. I have had to save her life twice with abdominal thrusts. There is no way she could go to school when she has it. She is too unwell for school.'
Lauren is about to start second year at Hermitage Academy in Helensburgh where she will shortly be choosing her subjects and, with ambitions of becoming a doctor, days away from school are a worry.
Stephen told the Daily Record: 'She has missed so much school over the last three or four years because of it.' Two years ago the tonsillitis caused her to develop mesenteric adenitis, a painful abdominal condition triggered by viral or bacterial infections.
Stephen said: 'She was off school for months, she couldn't walk, she couldn't speak, she had to live downstairs in the house because she couldn't get up the stairs. It is just cruel to have somebody living like this, particularly a 12-year-old kid.
"She got put on the list last April we were told it would be 18 months. I phoned up at Christmas to get her put on the cancellation list and they said at that point it was two years.
'I phoned up last week to let them know she had choked again and at that point I was told it was three years. They said a consultant would phone me back but a week later I have heard nothing.
'I've had have to save her life twice. It was lucky I was there because if not I don't know what would have happened. Both times she had tonsillitis and she has not choked any other time so it is quite clearly because of her tonsils.
'Every time she gets it, it is getting worse and she is missing two weeks of school every couple of months. Choking is a life threatening thing and it's not something to be mucked about with when it can be easily dealt with by a simple out-patient operation; why it is three years is mental.
'I asked Lauren what she would do if she won the lottery, what would she buy first. She said she would pay to get her tonsils out. That's crazy that a 12-year-old's dreams are that.'
The family are now looking into possibly taking a bank loan to pay privately for Lauren to have the operation. Stephen said: 'There is no way we can wait another 18 months to two years for an operation. That would be her Highers gone. It is hard for her to keep catching up.
"But if nothing happens within the next six months we will have to seriously look into that but something doesn't feel right about doing that. The NHS is supposed to be free for those who need it and if you are having to go private for something as simple as this what is the point in the NHS?'
Jackie Baillie, Scottish Labour's health spokeswoman, said: 'No parent should have to worry their child could choke to death just because the SNP has failed to get to grip with waiting lists.
'This situation is completely unacceptable and is causing untold misery to the family involved. The SNP must ensure Lauren receives the treatment she needs as soon as possible so that she can focus on her education and the family does not need to live in fear.'
Dr Claire Harrow, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde's Deputy Medical Director for Acute Services, apologised for the 'ongoing health challenges and the distress this is causing'.
She said while they could not comment on individual cases 'we understand how difficult it is for anyone managing repeated episodes of tonsillitis'.

Friends and family of former footballer Stephen Darby walk 156 Miles for Motor Neurone Disease
Hundreds have joined a grassroots football tour across the North to raise funds and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND), in support of former footballer Stephen Darby. Over the weekend, more than 200 people are taking part in the charity walk across the North West and Yorkshire, raising money for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation. The 156-mile walk aims to support those living with Motor Neurone Disease and to help fund crucial research into finding a cure. The event, which starts and ends at Ossett United near Wakefield and includes stops at more than 20 football clubs — among them Leeds United, Farsley Celtic, Bradford City, Bradford Park Avenue, Brighouse Town, FC Halifax Town, Rochdale, Bury, Radcliffe, Horwich RMI, Atherton Collieries, Trafford, Altrincham, Stockport County, Hyde United, Stalybridge Celtic, Droylsden, FC United of Manchester, Oldham Athletic, Longwood, and Huddersfield Town. Mike Wilson, Derby MND Foundation event lead, said: "We've been trying to emulate the hard work that Rob Burrow, Kevin Sinfield and Doddie Weir have done in rugby, and to get football to recognise MND in the same way — and to support one of their own in Stephen." He added: "The support we've had in the last two years has been fantastic. We have around 230 people taking part, some walking five miles, others doing 30 or 40. "Bradford City, where Stephen had such a fantastic career, can't do enough for him. People are really starting to understand just how horrific MND is — and right now, there's no cure and it's underfunded. We have to do more.' Stephen Darby, who was diagnosed with MND in 2018 and now uses a wheelchair, remains central to the foundation's mission. Mr Wilson continued: "Stephen's still the driving force behind this,' Wilson said. 'He's still making the decisions and he's just an inspiration to us all.' Among those taking part was Gary Scott, who played for Altrincham between 2000 and 2008. He walked in memory of two former teammates lost to MND. "I played with Mark Maddox, who was at Altrincham for 10 years. He handled the illness head on — just like he played," Scott said. "There's also George Melling. It's unthinkable — two lads from one squad of 16. That's why we do things like this, so we don't forget them and so we keep pushing for a cure. "The donations are great, but raising awareness is just as important. I only know about MND because of what Mark went through." Stephen's wife, Steph Houghton, also joined the walk — completing more than 18 miles from Atherton to Altrincham with family members. "I've not sat down for the last six hours so I might be sore later," she said, 'but it's been a fantastic day. I'm very proud to be able to contribute in some way, because there are some amazing people who've done a lot for the foundation.' Steph described the support as 'overwhelming' and said it means the world to her and Stephen. "Sometimes it's hard for us to participate, but for me to do this with the rest of our family — and for Stephen to be at the finish line — is super special. We can't thank everyone enough." She added: "We're okay. I'm not going to say everything's good, because it's not. Everything changes every day — that's what this condition does. It's forever a challenge.' "We won't stop until that cure is there. We probably aren't even close, which is disappointing — but we just have to keep doing what we're doing.' So far the Grassroots Football Tour for MND have raised £25,000.

Purchase the Yves Saint Laurent L'Homme Eau De Toilette (100ml) in the Debenhams sale here. A second shopper praised: "This facial massaged is amazing. It deeply massages the muscles and tissue in your face, neck and jaw line. Three different settings enables targeting rejuvenation of red, green and blue light therapy. Quality product that I'm very happy with. Neck and jaw appear sculpted. I would highly recommend this product." Someone else agreed: "Ordered this item being sceptical at first but thought I'd give it a try and so glad I did. I used it for five minutes on the day off arrival and it was clear to see which side of my face I'd done. It instantly lifts and firms and skin feels so soft. I used it with my serum, what a wonderful product it is. II worked out how to use the different settings which is easy with the instruction leaflet. I will use it everyday now, don't hesitate to purchase it." There has been some criticism over the battery life, as one disappointed shopper said: "Effective but battery life is 10 mins. I am not sure if I have been sent a faulty machine -but I use this machine twice -am and pm (10 minutes each) and I am finding that I have to charge it 2 times a day for it to last 2 sessions a day." Meanwhile, a more positive review read: "Since using this product 4 weeks my face is more lifted and youthful. My facial creams absorb greatly. Please do try this product. It does what it says you will not be disappointed." Purchase the Facial Massager Lifting Device on Amazon for £22.94 here.

Baby Reindeer's 'Martha' going blind amid stress of show
Fiona Harvey, a law graduate, has been diagnosed with background retinopathy, reports the Daily Record. The 59-year-old, from Scotland, is currently at the centre of a huge multi-million-dollar lawsuit against Netflix. According to the newspaper, the diagnosis is just one of several health issues Fiona claims have arisen since being identified as the inspiration for Baby Reindeer stalker, Martha. Richard Gadd - Baby Reindeer's 'Martha' going blind amid stress of Netflix show (Image: Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP) The series, which aired more than one year ago, is claimed to be a 'true story'. Following it, Fiona filed a £132million defamation lawsuit against Netflix, claiming she was easily identifiable as Martha. However, Netflix is defending the lawsuit and Gadd's 'right to tell his story'. She told the Record: 'I'm going blind and it's not surprising with the stress I have been under as a result of Baby Reindeer. 'I am diabetic and have always been able to keep my blood sugars under control, but my blood sugars have been wild ever since Richard Gadd's show aired. 'I am not sleeping properly, I'm not able to eat properly, I'm not able to get proper exercise because I'm virtually a prisoner in my own home.' Fiona received confirmation of her illness after eye tests at a London hospital recently. READ MORE: Glasgow roads will be closed to allow TV series filming READ MORE: Huge actor to star in new series being filmed in Glasgow Background retinopathy affects people with diabetes. It occurs when high blood sugar levels damage light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. A letter confirming Fiona's condition said: 'Dear Dr Fiona Harvey, Your test results show that you do have background retinopathy.' Fiona added: 'It is something that diabetics can get if your sugars are out of control. "My sugars were fine until Baby Reindeer, that led to all my physical health problems. 'I don't have money for proper food. "I feel it could lead to blindness very quickly in both eyes.' At the crux of Fiona's lawsuit against Netflix is that, unlike Martha, who is sent to jail twice, she has no criminal convictions. She said: 'I have no criminal record. I am not Myra Hindley. I am not Rose West. "I'm not Dennis Nilsen. "I have not received an indefinite life sentence. My life was normal before this started. Mr Gadd has made my life intolerable. "I've had to send people out to do the food shopping. I can't have workmen in my house, lest they go off to Netflix.'
