ASML warns it may not achieve growth in 2026

Yahooa day ago
VELDHOVEN (Reuters) -ASML, the world's biggest supplier of computer chip-making equipment, on Wednesday warned it may not achieve growth in 2026, even after its second quarter bookings beat market expectations.
Analysts had hoped that the quarter would provide some reassurance over its outlook for 2026. However, the company warned that geopolitical uncertainty continued to cloud its prospects.
"We continue to see increasing uncertainty driven by macro-economic and geopolitical developments", ASML's chief executive Christophe Fouquet said in a statement.
The Dutch group's net bookings, the most closely watched figure in the industry, were 5.54 billion euros ($6.4 billion). That was ahead of analysts' consensus estimate of 4.44 billion euros according to researcher Visible Alpha.

Novartis first half net profits up 29 percent

Swiss pharmaceuticals giant Novartis posted Thursday a 29 percent increase in first-half net income, at $7.6 billion -- and unveiled its new chief financial officer. The Basel-based firm's net sales increased 12 percent to nearly $27.3 billion between January and June, it said in a statement. Generic competition reduced its sales by two percent. In the first half of 2025, sales of Entresto -- its flagship drug to treat chronic heart failure -- reached $4.6 billion, up 22 percent. Generic versions are expected to hit the market in the second half of the year. Novartis chief executive Vas Narasimhan also pointed to the strong performance of other treatments such as Kisqali, for breast cancer, and Pluvicto, for prostate cancer. The group also announced a change in its financial leadership due to take place next year. Mukul Mehta, the head of business planning and analysis in digital finance and tax, will become the new chief financial officer in March. He will succeed Harry Kirsch, who has held the position since 2013. Kirsch is retiring after 22 years with the company. noo/rjm/nl Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

Canada's Olivia Smith signed by Arsenal for women's world record 1M pounds

Canada forward Olivia Smith has become the first women's soccer player to be signed for one million pounds ($1.34 million). Arsenal signed Smith from Liverpool on Thursday reportedly for the world record fee. That fee would surpass the 900,000 pounds ($1.1 million) Chelsea paid when signing Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave in January, which set a new benchmark in women's soccer. 'She's one of the most talented young players in the game and has huge potential for further development here at the club," Arsenal director of women's football Clare Wheatley said. Smith's move highlights the increase in spending in women's soccer with transfer records being broken on a regular basis in recent times. Zambia striker Rachael Kundananji joined Bay FC from Madrid CFF for a record $788,000 last year and that figure was quickly exceeded by Girma's move to Chelsea. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer: James Robson, The Associated Press

YAHOO POLL: Does cutting public holidays help boost the economy?

French prime minister, Francois Bayrou has made headlines for his plans to cancel two public holidays as part of radical measures to reduce France's ballooning deficit, boost its economy and manage debt. Bayrou has suggested scrapping Easter Monday and 8 May (a day commemorating the end of World War II in Europe) which would leave France with nine national holidays. The French PM believes two extra days of working would add "several billions of euros" to the country but the proposition has been met with fierce criticism from the political left and far right – and calls for Bayrou to face another no-confidence vote. An opinion piece in The Telegraph urged Britain's chief financial minister Rachel Reeves to reconsider national holidays in the UK. "Our debt level is dangerously close to 100% of GDP (in France it's 110%) and we too have a serious productivity problem and every reason to worry about the sustainability of our public finances," wrote Jill Kirby in the piece. Bayrou's idea is that working two extra days will generate more revenue for the government but economic studies suggest it won't be as simple as that. In fact, there are also studies which conclude that leisure – or an increase in public holidays – can act as an economic boost, up to a certain point.
