PM Modi hails Security Forces after 27 Maoists, including top CPI-Maoist leader, killed in Chhattisgarh
New Delhi [India], May 21 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday praised the efforts of India's security forces after 27 Maoists, including top CPI-Maoist leader Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju, were killed in a major operation in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district.
In a post on X, Prime Minister Modi said, 'Proud of our forces for this remarkable success. Our Government is committed to eliminating the menace of Maoism and ensuring a life of peace and progress for our people.'

Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said this was a breakthrough and confirmed that security forces had neutralised 27 dreaded Maoists, including Basavaraju, who was the General Secretary of the CPI-Maoist.
In a post on X, he said this is the first time in three decades of India's battle against Naxalism that a general secretary-ranked leader has been neutralised by the security forces.

Noting that Basavaraju was the backbone of the Naxal movement, Amit Shah said 54 Naxalites have been arrested and 84 Naxalites have surrendered in Chhattisgarh, after the completion of Operation Black Forest.
Amit Shah said the Modi government is resolved to eliminate Naxalism before March 31 next year.
'A landmark achievement in the battle to eliminate Naxalism. Today, in an operation in Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh, our security forces have neutralised 27 dreaded Maoists, including Nambala Keshav Rao, alias Basavaraju, the general secretary of CPI-Maoist, topmost leader, and the backbone of the Naxal movement,' he said in his X post.
'This is the first time in three decades of Bharat's battle against Naxalism that a general secretary-ranked leader has been neutralised by our forces. I applaud our brave security forces and agencies for this major breakthrough. Also glad to share that after the completion of Operation Black Forest, 54 Naxalites have been arrested and 84 Naxalites have surrendered in Chhattisgarh, Telangana, and Maharashtra. The Modi government is resolved to eliminate Naxalism before the March 31. 2026,' he added.
The encounter took place in the forest area of Abujhmad in Narayanpur. Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao also confirmed the development and said the forces are working hard to make Bastar Naxal-free by March 2026.
'After the formation of our government in the state, a programme is running to make Bastar Naxal-free. In Narayanpur, more than two dozen Naxalites have been killed in an encounter. Our security forces are working diligently so that by March 2026, Bastar becomes Naxal-free,' Arun Sao told ANI.
He also said that one soldier was injured during the encounter.
The joint operation, named 'Operation Black Forest', was launched by security forces near Karreguttalu Hill (KGH) at the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border to break the backbone of the Maoist movement.(ANI)

Indus Water Treaty suspension: Centre to revive Tulbul hydel project, says Khattar
Union power minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Thursday said the Centre will revive the Tulbul project on the Wular Lake in Jammu and Kashmir as it no longer needs Pakistan's consent after the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) was put in abeyance. The minister also said India will 'definitely' work on new hydro-electric projects in the wake of the suspension of the IWT with Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. 'Before, whenever we had to undertake some work, we had to discuss that with them (Pakistan) and could not do anything without their consent. There was a project (Tulbul) under Wular Lake which was conceived in 1981 but they did not consent and it was shelved. Now, when there is no need (for consent), we will restart the project and a detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared soon,' Khattar said in Srinagar. He was addressing a press conference on the completion of 11 years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre. Asked if the government would start working on new hydro-electric projects following the suspension of the IWT, he said, 'Yes, definitely. Whatever they have to do, let them do that. We have given them a response and if they do anything again, they will get a response on the same pattern.' The Tulbul project, which envisaged constructing a 439-ft-long and 40-ft-wide barrage with a storage capacity of 0.3 million-acre-feet (MAF) below the Wular Lake near Ningli in north Kashmir's Bandipora district to stabilise Jhelum's water level, was abandoned midway in 1987 after strong objections from Pakistan. In talks with Centre on resumption of projects: Omar J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah said discussions were being held with the Centre on the resumption of development projects that were halted due to the Indus Water Treaty. With the treaty in abeyance, Omar said there are two projects -- one in Kashmir and the other in Jammu -- on which work can begin soon. 'After the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, we have two projects on which work can start soon, one is in Kashmir and the other is in Jammu. Now, talks are going on with the central government regarding both the projects,' Omar said when asked whether the government will take advantage of the IWT being in abeyance. The CM was talking to reporters after a meeting with Khattar at the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) here. At a review meeting, Omar said it was related to centrally sponsored projects and schemes under the ministry of power and the ministry of housing and urban affairs -- both departments that he handles. 'Overall, progress in both areas has been fairly satisfactory. We also discussed areas where we have expectations from the Centre. In some places, there were minor shortcomings, and we have received suggestions on how to correct them. We will implement those,' he said. To a question on the power department facing losses, the chief minister said it is still in debt because there is a difference in the price at which the government purchases and supplies power. 'We are supplying power to everyone on a concession basis. Be it a domestic consumer or commercial consumer or industrial consumer, everyone takes power at concession rates. But it will get better gradually,' he said.

Modi-Carney G7 meet opportunity to reset ties: MEA
The upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney on the margins of the G7 Summit is an opportunity to reset bilateral ties based on mutual respect and sensitivity to each other's concerns, the external affairs ministry said on Thursday. India-Canada ties rapidly deteriorated after former Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau alleged in September 2023 that Indian government agents were linked to the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India dismissed the charge as 'absurd' and accused the Canadian government of giving safe haven to separatists and radical elements that posed a threat to Indian diplomats. Modi and Carney had their first phone conversation on June 6, when the Indian prime minister accepted an invitation to attend the outreach session of the G7 Summit to be hosted by Canada in the resort of Kananaskis during June 15-17. 'We believe that the forthcoming meeting between the two leaders on the sidelines of the G7 Summit will offer an important opportunity to exchange views on bilateral and global issues, and to explore pathways to reset the relationship based on mutual respect, shared interests and sensitivity to each other's concerns,' external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a weekly news briefing. He didn't go into details of the concerns of both countries and said India's views on 'some of these issues have already been shared publicly in considerable detail'. Besides accusing the Canadian side of not doing enough to rein in Khalistani elements that have threatened Indian diplomatic facilities and diplomats, New Delhi had also said the previous Trudeau administration was providing space to secessionist and radical forces inimical to Indian interests. When Carney called Modi last week, the leaders had an 'opportunity to reflect on the India-Canada relationship and the way forward', Jaiswal said, in an apparent reference to the cratering of relations over the past two years. India and Canada, Jaiswal noted, are 'vibrant democracies bound by shared democratic values, a steadfast commitment to the rule of law, and vibrant people-to-people ties'. A readout issued by the Canadian Prime Minister's Office on the phone call between Modi and Carney had said that 'there was agreement to continued law enforcement dialogue and discussions addressing security concerns'. The Indian readout on the conversation had made no reference to this issue. Jaiswal responded to a question on the Canadian reference to a dialogue on security concerns by saying that there are existing mechanisms between Indian and Canadian law enforcement agencies that have 'discussed issues of mutual security concern over a period of time'. He added, 'This engagement is likely to continue.' The trial of four Indian men arrested for alleged involvement in the killing of Nijjar is currently underway in Canada. At the same time, both sides have shown interest in discussing the activities of trans-national criminal gangs, including elements with ties to Khalistani separatists. The planned meeting between Modi and Carney is being seen as the first real opportunity in almost two years to repair bilateral ties. Besides the deep people-to-people ties between India and Canada, the Carney government is interested in forging stronger economic ties with India in the face of strained relations with the US due to the trade policies of the Donald Trump administration. Carney has defended his decision to invite Modi to the G7 Summit following criticism of the move by Sikh groups in Canada. He has said India is central to several supply chains, and that the decision to invite Modi was made after consulting other G7 member countries. India is the fifth largest economy and at the heart of a crucial supply chains, he said. India's presence is 'essential' when the G7 countries address key issues such as security, energy, the digital future and critical minerals at the summit, he added. 'There are certain countries that should be at the table for those discussions,' Carney said. Among the priorities listed by Canada for the G7 Summit are strengthening security, countering foreign interference and trans-national crime, building energy security, accelerating the digital transition, and fortifying critical mineral supply chains.

CM exhorts students to protect public property
Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday exhorted students to protect public property, saying these are collective assets and damaging them harm the nation. "Do not damage national property. If someone is doing so, stop them. If you feel powerless, report it. Share a photo, we will handle the rest and recover the damages. Public property is national property and a collective responsibility," he said. He was speaking during a function to felicitate meritorious students, who excelled in state and national board exams, and the 68th National School Sports Competition 2024-25 held in Ranchi this Jan. Speaking about the transformation of education in UP, Yogi said over the past 8 years, the condition and working of schools and secondary education has changed dramatically. "Before 2017, basic education was in decline and secondary education was marred by widespread cheating. Earlier govts introduced two major 'businesses' in UP, one of cheating and the other of transfer-posting. Exam centres were operated on a wholesale basis for cheating. External candidates filled out forms, and someone else appeared in their place for the exams. Simultaneously, transfer and posting became an entire industry. The BJP govt cracked down on these industries and brought in fair practices," he said. Yogi added that at exam centres, various mechanisms like CCTV surveillance, boundary walls, adequate infrastructure, and proper furniture, have been put in place to prevent cheating. "Exams that used to stretch over two to three months are now completed within 13-14 days," he said. Highlighting the state of recruitment in the state, the CM said over 8 lakh were given govt jobs across sectors. On June 15, 60,244 police personnel will be receiving appointment letters in the presence of Union home minister Amit Shah. Among these, over 12,000 are women. Calling the result of the Board exams "surprising" where girls performed better than boys, the CM awarded Rs 1,00,000 in cash, a tablet, a certificate of appreciation, and a medal to students who ranked in the merit list. At the district level, meritorious students received Rs 21,000 in cash, a tablet, a certificate, and a medal. To the gold medalists of the National School Sports Competition, the govt awarded Rs 75,000 to gold winners, Rs 50,000 to silver and Rs 30,000 to bronze medalists. In team events, the prize money was Rs 35,000 for gold, Rs 25,000 for silver, and Rs 15,000 for bronze. The CM also laid the foundation stone for the new buildings of the UP Secondary Sanskrit Education Council, established in 2001, and its directorate. The new complex will cost Rs over 42 crore and will include a Sanskrit library, facilities for training, conversation and other programmes. A new building for the Government Girls Intermediate College will be constructed on Jagat Narayan Road in Lucknow under 'Project Alankar' at an outlay of Rs 48.92 crore. Alos, the govt has allocated Rs 10.36 crore for a new building of Government Girls Inter College, Malihabad. Around Rs 20 crore is being spent on two new Sanskrit schools with hostels in Chandauli and Bhadohi. The CM also announced an MoU between the secondary education department, Tata Nelco, and Japan's Yaskawa under which students will have the opportunity of learning skills along with academics. Under this initiative, the govt will establish design, robotics, and electronics labs in govt secondary schools, with an investment of Rs 162.72 crore.
