Calcutta HC grants permission to advocates to file PILs over law student's 'gang rape'

Calcutta High Court
Monday granted permission to three advocates to file separate PILs over the alleged gang rape of a law student in her college.
They are seeking an investigation under the supervision of the court and steps to ensure security in colleges across West Bengal.
Drawing attention of a division bench presided by Justice Soumen Sen, the three advocates sought permission of the court to file separate PILs over the alleged gang rape of the law student.

Based on the alleged gang rape survivor's complaint, the police have arrested prime accused alumnus Manojit Mishra, along with students Promit Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed. A guard of the college was also apprehended on Saturday morning, according to the police.

Court closes defamation case against Nawab Malik after BJP functionary withdraws 2021 complaint
A magistrate court here on Monday closed defamation proceedings against former Maharashtra minister Nawab Malik after BJP functionary Mohit Kamboj withdrew his complaint. "The accused stands acquitted of the offence under IPC section 500 (defamation) and the proceeding is hereby closed," the court ruled. Actor Shefali Jariwala, who passed away on the night of June 27, was taking different types of medicines, including anti-ageing tablets , and her blood pressure had dropped possibly from consuming these on an empty stomach before she was rushed to hospital, police officials probing her death said on Monday. Jariwala (42), who shot to fame with her breakout appearance in the remix track "Kaanta Laga" and also appeared on several reality shows, was rushed to Bellevue Multispeciality Hospital in Andheri by her actor husband Parag Tyagi at 11:15pm on Friday, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. Police was informed at 1am on Saturday and her body was sent for post mortem to Cooper Hospital.
