Law firm drops St. Johns County Airport Authority over allegations of law violations
Action News Jax has learned The St. Johns County Airport Authority is in need of new legal representation after its law firm accused some members of the governing board of violating the state's Sunshine Law.
Action News Jax obtained a letter sent to board members by Douglas Law Firm, in which the firm accused two board members of violating public meetings and records laws and Florida's voting conflicts law.

'Our firm has repeatedly advised of the consequences that could endanger the Airport Authority,' wrote the firm. 'Those warnings and legal advice have been ignored.'
In a press release Saturday, the airport responded, saying it is aware of the law firm's withdrawal and, 'The staff of the Northeast Florida Regional Airport remains focused on the safe and orderly operation of the Airport while the Board of Directors addresses this matter at their next regularly scheduled board meeting. This matter has no impact on the day-to-day operations of the Airport'.
A special board meeting was previously scheduled for Monday, but was canceled by the board chair without explanation.
The next regular board meeting is March 10th.
Board member Jennifer Liotta told Action News Jax she found out about the press release from one of our reporters, not from her four fellow board members.
She's calling for a full investigation into the allegations laid out in the law firm's letter, adding that the lack of legal council is 'detrimental' to the board's operations.
'Do the proper interviews, document reviews, whatever's necessary and come back with a report. And that may potentially lead to referrals to the Florida Commission on Ethics or potentially law enforcement,' said Liotta.

We've learned the state attorney's office has been notified about the allegations and could review the case for potential criminal charges.
Action News Jax has reached out to the two board members named in the letter, but we have not heard back.

Clay County deputy fired after investigation of missing cash from man he arrested
A Clay County deputy is out of a job after being accused of stealing $4,000 during an arrest. Action News Jax reported last month about accusations filed following the arrest of Willie Davis Jr. in September. He said deputies seized $6,900 from him when he was arrested. Davis' attorney said when he picked up his belongings, some of that money had disappeared. Jail records show only $2,900 was put in Davis' account. Clay authorities confirmed that deputy has been fired. 'We hold all of our deputies and employees to the highest standards and this probationary deputy failed to meet those standards,' Clay County Sheriff Michelle Cook said. 2 advocacy groups sue feds over Atlanta training center records
Two civil liberties groups have teamed up in a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI over records related to the Atlanta Public Safety Training Center. Defending Rights & Dissent and Project South said in their lawsuit that the government failed to provide records on surveillance and investigations of protesters in connection with the site. 'More than two years later, DHS has failed to respond entirely, while the FBI has repeatedly stonewalled and slow-walked the release of these documents in the public interest,' the lawsuit stated. The groups said that people protesting the facility 'have been branded as terrorists or extremists for opposing 'Cop City.' All too often we know federal agencies like the FBI or DHS play a role in facilitating these crackdowns.' The DHS and FBI have 60 days to respond to the Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed on May 9, the lawsuit said. Protests escalated at the site after the 2023 shooting death of Manuel Esteban Paez Terán, known as Tortuguita. Paez Terán was camping near the site when authorities launched a clearing operation. Officials said they killed the 26-year-old after the activist shot and wounded a trooper from inside a tent. A family-commissioned autopsy concluded they were killed with their hands in the air, but a prosecutor found the officers' use of force was 'objectively reasonable.' ‘Prepared to respond:' Duval County law enforcement conducts active shooter training in Mayport
When law enforcement authorities said 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner opened fire on Florida State University's campus earlier this year, killing two and injuring several others, it served as a reminder just how close to home the threat of an active shooter is for schools across Florida and in Duval County. 'Those officers did a great job that day, but it's another reminder of how close to home these things happen and how quickly they can happen,' Duval County Public Schools Police Chief Jackson Short said Thursday morning. 'So it's important that we take them seriously and that we are prepared to respond.' Thursday morning, for the fourth straight year, multiple law enforcement agencies across Duval County conducted active shooter drills in our area schools, to make sure they're prepared in times of crisis. 'They [were] tasked with not only locating the suspects, but also addressing them appropriately,' Chief Short explained. 'In addition, we [also had] students simulating victims that need different levels of first aid, so using concepts such as the rescue task force, which is a partnership between law enforcement and fire rescue, to get those trained medical personnel into the crisis site.'
