Shrewsbury Town takeover plans fall through
Shrewsbury Town have been forced to look elsewhere for new investment following the collapse of a takeover deal from a potential American owner. The existing deal on the table, to end long-serving chairman Roland Wycherley's 29-year ownership of the struggling League One club, had been under discussion since first being publicly announced in September.Although the prospective new owner's application had not yet been submitted to the English Football League Owners and Directors 'fit and proper person' test, it had nearly reached completion following a six-month exclusivity period. That period ends on Monday, 31 March, after which time Shrewsbury would be free to talk to any potential bidders. One media report says it looks like the takeover has already collapsed as the interested party had decided the timing was not right due to a liquidity issue from another business. But, in reality, the proposed first-choice bidder wanted to spend the weekend ahead of Monday's deadline thinking it through. It is believed the club already have three other interested parties ready to negotiate.
Shrewsbury on the edge
This latest twist on Shrewsbury's uncertain future caps a bad week in a bad season for the Shropshire club.Previous Town head coach Gareth Ainsworth, who knew that the proposed Town takeover was not guaranteed when he first took the job in November, left last Tuesday. He was on contract until 2026 but a settlement fee was agreed between the two clubs for both him and his number two Richard Dobson to join Gillingham.Little more than 24 hours later Michael Appleton was appointed as head coach until the end of the season but his first game ended in a 4-1 defeat by leaders Birmingham City on Saturday. And Shrewsbury, 14 points adrift of safety with just eight games left, now face a further daunting test against another of Ainsworth's former clubs, third-placed Wycombe Wanderers, at Adams Park on Tuesday night. If they lose that and again at home to Cambridge United next Saturday, that could conceivably be enough to relegate them with a month of the season left.
Wycherley's time as Town chairman
For a club of their comparatively limited resources, Shrewsbury have done well to enjoy a 10-year tenure of English football's third tier - and that has largely been down to the steady hand Wycherley has kept on the financial tiller. After stepping up from his role as vice-chairman when previous Town chairman Ray Bailey stepped down in the summer of 1996, Wycherley suffered relegation to the fourth tier in his first season, then the even worse fate of relegation from the Football League in 2004.But they were promoted back in a year later under then boss Jimmy Quinn - and Wycherley was also the driving force behind leaving their quirky but flood-ravaged old Gay Meadow home on the banks of the River Severn in 2007 to move to a new 10,000 all-seater stadium on the edge of town at Meole Brace - and a boom in average home attendances. They won back their place in the third tier when they got promotion to League One under Micky Mellon in 2015 but for a side that only first entered the Football League in 1950, they are still judged by fans who hark back to the near decade they spent as a Second Division club (1979 to 1989), largely under Graham Turner and Chic Bates.

Scott McTominay shared a secret about Napoli with me while in Naples and his Serie A impact is no surprise
The Scotland star is already a hero at his new club alongside international colleague and pal Billy Gilmour Scott McTominay shared a secret with a Napoli colleague that he has now let the world in on. The new King of Naples had a Serie A debut season even he wouldn't have dreamed of as he lifted the Scudetto alongside Scotland colleague Billy Gilmour and instantly became a club legend and fans' favourite with the diehard support. Elia Caprile - who joined Cagliari on loan in January and looks set to make it a permanent stay according to Italian reports - has revealed that the former Manchester United star told him that he has NEVER trained as much as he has under Antonio Conte. The stopper has also not been surprised by the impact he has had on the league in his debut campaign as he opened up on the talks he shared with McTominay and Gilmour about their time at Old Trafford and Brighton. He is also no stranger to the English game having spent some time at Leeds early on in his career. Caprile - speaking in his homeland - explained: "One day McTominay told me: 'I have never trained as much as I did with Conte'. "I expected him to have this impact on Serie A. From him, but also from all the new players. "Kvara, McTominay, Buongirono, Di Lorenzo, Lobotka, who in my opinion is the strongest midfielder in Italy with his characteristics." He continued: "It was like being in the playground. "We spoke to McTominay and Gilmour about the English culture. I asked them what life was like at United and Brighton. "We compared my experience at Leeds and then in Italy." The 28-year-old is on a well-earned summer break after finishing the campaign on Scotland duty. He started the friendly defeat to Iceland at Hampden last week but missed out on the trip to Vaduz to face Liechtenstein through injury alongside new Celtic recruit Kieran Tierney. Steve Clarke will be depending on the Napoli star in his bid to lead Scotland to the World Cup with qualifying on the horizon. The Dark Blues will face Denmark, Greece and Belarus in a four team section. At club level it will be all about defending the Serie A crown and fighting for the Coppa Italia and Champions League next term.

Liverpool haven't offered the 28-year-old a contract extension and he could be marginalised after the expected £126million signing of Florian Wirtz - which would smash the British transfer record. Despite initially rejecting Barcelona's advances, Liverpool have reportedly told Diaz that he can leave for just £51million, according to Spanish outlet SPORT. Taylor Knibb insists 'I'm not the one to beat' as PTO resumes
Defending champion Taylor Knibb insists she is not the one to beat ahead of the T100 Triathlon World Tour's latest stop in Vancouver. Knibb romped to the world title last year but was beaten for the first time under the T100 in San Francisco a fortnight ago when she finished second behind Julie Derron. But the American was keen to highlight the strength in depth of the women's field, and shrugged off the notion that she had a target on her back on Canada's west coast. 'Defending would imply you have something to lose, so reframing that is more appropriate in that there is a world title on the line and I would like to do everything I can to get another world title,' she said. 'No one has earned it yet and it is all for the taking. 'There are a lot of really strong women in the field and if there is anyone who thinks I am the only person to beat, I have a list that is very extensive. 'There are a lot of women who are incredibly strong and incredibly talented. There are a lot of threats.' Knibb won all of her T100 races last season, picking up victories in San Francisco, Ibiza and Las Vegas before sealing the world title with a dominant display in Dubai last November. The 27-year-old was unable to repeat the feat in San Fransico two weeks ago, but the American was positive about her season opener having missed the first leg in Singapore. 'It was a great first race of the season and I am excited to keep on improving from there,' she said. 'I have a lot of work to do. You can't do it all in two weeks, you have to recover for the next race but I am excited for the season ahead.' Knibb will race in Vancouver for the first time in her career, as the T100 Triathlon World Tour makes its maiden stop in Canada. Having raced all around the globe, including at two Olympic Games, Knibb is embracing a new environment and a new course to get her teeth into. 'It's really fun to get to go to a place I've never been to before that is really quite gorgeous,' she added. 'In this sport, there are races that are held in the same place for numerous years and that's fantastic but after the 15th time of visiting a city, it is fun to go somewhere else. 'It looks like a fantastic course. I tried the bike course yesterday. The swim for the women is apparently going to be a really long run in, so we'll see how that plays out. 'It seems like a fantastic venue and the T100 has once again delivered a fantastic race course.' Watch the world's top 20 female and top 20 male triathletes race live in the Vancouver T100 on Saturday 14 June. The broadcast starts at 0915 local time, 1715 in the UK, with the men's race starting at 0930 and then the women at 1200. You can tune in live for free globally on PTO+ or watch on partners channels such as TNT Sports in the UK, Max or Discovery+ in Europe, or beIN in North America. For more details visit
