Amid heightening leadership row with son, Ramadoss vows to form 'victorious alliance'

Chennai, Aug 11 (UNI) Amid the heightened leadership row between the father and son duo
in the first family of the OBC-Vanniyar dominated PMK, its Founder Dr S Ramadoss said he
would definitely form a 'victorious alliance' for the 2026 Assembly polls, due in 8-9 months.
In a veiled reference to his son Dr Anbumani, who had made a similar claim at the GC meeting convened by him two days back in his capacity as the PMK President (though later demoted as
Working President by his dad in May this year over the leadership tussle) after the Madras High
Court cleared the decks, Dr Ramadoss urged the PMK cadres not to heed to anybody's words
and asserted that whatever he tell will definitely happen.
Winding up the 8th Vanniyar Women's Conference organised by the PMK at Vanniyar Sangam
at Poompuhar in Mayiladthurai district last night, he exhorted the party cadre not to heed to
'anyone else's words' and assured that he would definitely form a 'victorious alliance' for the
2026 Assembly elections.
'I will form a victorious alliance in 2026 no matter who says what. You don't even have to hear
it — only what I tell will happen,' Dr. Ramadoss told the gathering.
Urging Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to conduct the caste-based survey in state and questioned his hesitancy, Dr. Ramadoss said conducting the census would secure the Chief
Minister, a place in 'social history.
'Late Chief Minister Karunanidhi was my good friend. He gave 20% reservation for MBCs. As
his son, you should not hesitate,' he said, in a fervent plea to Mr Stalin to conduct the census.
He also urged Mr Stalin not to push the PMK to launch state-wide agitations in this regard.
He also demanded introduction of total prohibition in the state and the elimination of ganja
and drug menace in the state. and resolutions in this regard were adopted at the conference.

Should merit-cum-income policy guide filling quota posts?

NEW DELHI: In what could stir a fresh debate among SCs, STs and OBCs, Supreme Court on Monday agreed to examine an important issue - should benefit of quota in government employment and admissions to state-run institutions be first given to those members of quota-covered communities who continue to be the most socially and economically backward. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi sought response from Union government on a joint petition filed by two people, one belonging to the SC community and the other an OBC, after hearing brief arguments from advocate Reena Singh. SC had a word of caution - this is a sensitive issue requiring careful consideration. Singh said petitioners do not seek any change in quota percentage for scheduled communities. Justice Kant said many from SC, ST and OBC communities had advanced socially and economically by entering the elite categories of government employment through reservation and could provide best of education and facilities to their children. He said the time had probably come to consider whether such a class of people should continue to avail reservation at the cost of their own community members who are languishing in poverty and facing social issues. The task before the Justice Kant-led bench will not be insurmountable as a seven-judge bench judgment, authored by Justice B R Gavai, only the second member from the Dalit community to become CJI, had on Aug 1 last year permitted states to sub-categorise castes within SC communities based on degrees socio-economic backwardness and and under-representation in government jobs to ensure that the larger pie of 15% quota went to the most backward. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The court had asked govts to devise suitable criteria to bar the 'creamy layer' among SCs from availing reservation. The petitioners have argued, "Candidates from affluent SC, ST and OBC families often secure reserved jobs and seats. Individuals from extremely poor backgrounds and needy aspirants seldom get a chance to get a job or admission to government colleges despite the reservation policy. This defeats the purpose of social justice and perpetuates inequality within reserved categories. "By incorporating an economic threshold within reservations, the policy would align with the broader constitutional mandate of creating an egalitarian society. Furthermore, such reforms would prevent monopolisation of benefits by a privileged few, ensuring that affirmative action remains a dynamic and effective tool for socio-economic upliftment," they argued.

Governor to hoist tricolour at Morabadi; ‘At Home' cancelled in tribute to Shibu Soren

East Ranchi, Aug 11 (UNI) Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar will hoist the National Flag at the State-level Independence Day celebrations in Morabadi this year, departing from the customary practice of presiding over the ceremony in Dumka. The decision follows a proposal from the State Government, which the Governor has accepted. Traditionally, the Governor unfurls the flag in Dumka while the Chief Minister performs the honours in Morabadi. This year's change in venue for the Governor's participation marks a rare alteration in protocol. In a separate decision, Santosh Kumar Gangwar has called off the customary At Home reception hosted annually at Raj Bhavan on Independence Day. The move is intended as a mark of respect to the late Shibu Soren, former Chief Minister and revered leader of the Jharkhand movement, who passed away earlier this month.
