Two secondary schoolgirls charged with assault and unlawful confinement in Sungai Petani
The Form One students denied the joint charges read before Magistrate Mohamad Azlan Basri.
Lawyer N Nagaratnam, representing both accused, confirmed the first charge involved injuring the victim in a school toilet on July 14.
The charge falls under Section 323 of the Penal Code, punishable by up to one year in jail, a RM2,000 fine, or both.
The second charge alleges wrongful confinement of the victim at the same location and time.
This offence is under Section 342 of the Penal Code, carrying similar penalties.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Hazwani Md Nor sought RM4,000 bail for each accused.
Nagaratnam requested a reduction, citing the students' status.
The court set bail at RM2,000 each with one surety and barred contact with the victim.
The case will be mentioned again on September 23.
Earlier reports indicated a Form One student was allegedly bullied by schoolmates.
The victim was found in a school toilet with hands and feet tied and mouth gagged.
In a separate case, two 15-year-old boys admitted to assaulting a 16-year-old schoolmate.
Lawyer Farah Azlinda Zahari stated the offence occurred on July 21 at a school here.
They were charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code.
Sentencing was deferred pending character reports, with the next hearing on October 28.
Bail was set at RM1,000 each with one surety.

Civil servant among seven remanded over RM139k false claims
MELAKA: Seven people comprising a civil servant and six contractors were remanded for five days starting today to assist in investigations into allegations of submitting false claims totalling RM139,000 last year. The remand order until Monday against the suspects, aged 32 to 52, was issued by magistrate N. Sivashangari after receiving an application from the Melaka Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). According to a source, all the suspects were detained between 11.24am and 12.05pm yesterday when they appeared to give statements at the Melaka MACC office. "They are being investigated for the offence of submitting supply work documents involving six different companies to obtain claims for the supply of food and beverage services totalling RM139,100 when the supply was never carried out," said the source. The case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009 which, if convicted, carries a fine not less than five times the value of the false items or RM10,000, whichever is higher, and imprisonment not exceeding 20 years.

Business couple pleads not guilty to RM3.6 million false claim charges

KOTA KINABALU: A husband-and-wife business duo have claimed trial to charges of abetting a company director in submitting false claims amounting to more than RM3.6 million to the Department of Industrial Development and Research (DIDR). Anita Mohamed, 54, and Ang Ka Fat @ Kenny, 57, pleaded not guilty to their respective charges when brought before Sessions Court Judge Jason Juga on Thursday. Both face two separate charges each, as well as one joint charge, over the alleged offences. The charges were framed under Section 28(1)(c) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, read together with Section 18 of the same Act, and punishable under Section 24(2). Upon conviction, the provision carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence and a fine of at least five times the value of the false particulars, or RM10,000, whichever is higher. The documents were allegedly submitted to an administrative assistant at the DIDR office between 2022 and 2023. Man, 81, burns care centre following row with caretaker
PADANG BESAR: An elderly man allegedly set fire to a senior citizens' care centre in Kaki Bukit today after he was denied permission to travel to Kangar with his girlfriend to get a hearing aid. Padang Besar district police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Shokri Abdullah said preliminary investigations into the 8.31am incident revealed that the facility housed 20 elderly residents, one of whom is believed to have started the fire. "Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the care centre showed that the blaze was believed to have been ignited by an 81-year-old male resident. "The suspect allegedly started the fire in a cupboard in the kitchen area, which then spread to the main hall, destroying about 50 per cent of the space," he said in a statement today. Shokri said investigations later found that the act was fuelled by the suspect's dissatisfaction with the centre's caretaker. "The suspect was reportedly upset after being refused permission to travel to Kangar to get a hearing aid with his girlfriend, who is also a resident at the centre. "The estimated losses are still being assessed," he said, adding that the suspect has been arrested and later released on police bail. The case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire, which carries a maximum 14 years' imprisonment and a fine upon conviction. Meanwhile, a Perlis Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said the blaze damaged about 50 per cent of the building's structure. "Firefighters from the Padang Besar fire and rescue station were dispatched to the scene after we received an emergency call at 8.32am. "They used a 60-metre hose line with two water jets to bring the fire under control by 9.31am. "No injuries were reported, and the operation ended at 9.34am," the spokesman said.
