Scotland will be boosted by 'best ever' version of Cuthbert, says Corsie

BBC News02-04-2025

"I'm not even going to say maybe, it was without doubt the best football I've seen her play."That's just how well Scotland captain Rachel Corsie thinks midfielder Erin Cuthbert is currently performing.Scotland host Germany in the first of a Nations League A double-header on Friday and will be bolstered by the returning Cuthbert, who missed their opening matches against Austria and Netherlands in February because of a rib problem. Both games ended in defeat for interim head coach Michael McArdle.Cuthbert has been in fine form for WSL leaders Chelsea and helped them overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit to knock out Manchester City in the Women's Champions League quarter-finals last week."It's a boost with Erin back. I just saw her play the first 45 minutes at the weekend, and I was at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night," Corsie, who remains sidelined through injury, told the Behind the Goals podcast."I'm not even going to say maybe, it was without doubt best football I've seen her play. It's the efficiency of what she does, it's so effective."And she's sort of buzzing about, I know that she's feeling good; she knows that she's in a good bit of form, and she's enjoying it."Third in the Fifa rankings, Germany visit Tannadice on Friday night before the teams meet again in Wolfsburg four days later."We'll spend large parts of the game, I would think, against Germany under pressure," Corsie added."We've been in those games before, we've had a lot of games like that where we've shown we can compete and be really difficult to break down, so I would expect us to have to try and be really diligent and disciplined in that area of pitch."Former Scotland midfielder Leanne Crichton echoed Corsie's sentiment that it will be a night of hard graft out of possession, saying: "They'll need to be comfortable without the ball, that's the reality against the Germans."With the first leg on Scottish soil, though, the sidelined skipper does see some reason to be hopeful.Corsie said: "It's an advantage to be at home. I think that home game probably comes [with] a little extra optimism from my perspective because I just think, can we really try and push and get something out of that? "I feel optimistic, I do."

Controversial FIFA Club World Cup begins - with newly knighted David Beckham joining fans at Hard Rock stadium

The new-look FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) has begun, kicking off with a goalless game between Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Al Ahly. While many would have expected the Argentine legend to be named "man of the match", it was Miami's goalkeeper that took home the accolade - Oscar Ustari made eight saves, including one from the penalty spot. Messi almost won the match late on with a long-range effort, only for Al Ahly keeper Mohamed El Shenawy to turn his effort on to the bar. Also in attendance was the newly knighted David Beckham - or Sir David as he will soon be known. Before its revamp for the 2025 tournament, the Club World Cup took place every winter and was contested by the winners of continental club competitions around the world. It will now take place every four years. FIFA has faced criticism around the 32-team tournament, with some players raising concerns about the relentless fixture schedule. Europe has 12 clubs in the tournament, including Premier League clubs Chelsea and Manchester City. Their spaces were allocated based on performances in the Champions League over four seasons. Chelsea and City have already played 57 matches this season - now up to seven more have been added. It is why - in plans first revealed by Sky News in 2023 - global players' union FIFPRO has launched a legal challenge claiming FIFA has abused a dominant position to risk the health of players. A backdrop of unrest in America The CWC begins against the backdrop of immigration raids and violent protests in Los Angeles with concerns fans could be targeted or denied entry to FIFA events. It also the first time a major game has returned to the Hard Rock stadium in 11 months. The last match, the Copa America final saw ticketless fans breaching security gates and jumping over railings to enter the stadium, delaying kick off for 80 minutes.

World Cup misery for England as Littler and Humphries are knocked out

The world's top two players slipped to an 8-4 second round defeat at the Eissporthalle in Frankfurt, where Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko made the most of the backing of a partisan home crowd to seal a comprehensive victory. Littler and Humphries, who both received MBEs in the King's Birthday Honours, were made to pay for missed doubles with the 18-year-old in particular turning in an off-colour display in a country where he has endured previous disappointments. GERMANY DUMP OUT ENGLAND! 🇩🇪 What. A. Story! Martin Schindler and Ricardo Pietreczko produce a spectacular performance to topple England's titans Luke Humphries and Luke Littler! 📺 | Last 16 — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) June 14, 2025 A delighted Schindler, who had insisted in advance that the English duo were 'beatable', told Sky Sports: 'I was right because we believed in ourselves. 'We have been putting in a solid performance, and obviously the double 16s from Ricardo just went in, so we are very happy to go through. 'Today was one step and tomorrow is the other. That's it.' Booed by the home crowd, Littler started nervously and the Germans took the first two legs, but his 123 check-out got England on the board before a 64 finish levelled it up at 2-2. BACK-TO-BACK LEGS FOR ENGLAND! It's not over just yet… Humphries and Littler are battling valiantly here, and they register back-to-back legs to reduce the deficit to 7-4… 📺 | Last 16 — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) June 14, 2025 However, the the teenager missed three darts at a double in the fifth leg to allow Pietreczko to win it with a 106 out-shot and another in the sixth as the Germans restored their advantage, and after Humphries had hit 25 rather than bull going for 122, they went in at the break 5-2 ahead. Pietreczko took out 101 after the resumption before Germany went 7-2 up and although Littler and Humphries took the next two, they eventually succumbed as a return of just four doubles from the 11 chances they created ultimately proved costly. Germany's reward is a quarter-final tie against Australia, who routed Argentina 8-1 with Damon Heta and Simon Whitlock proving too strong for Jesus Salate and Victor Guillin despite missing 21 of their 29 attempts at doubles. Twice-winners Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton secured Wales' passage with a resounding 8-2 win over the Philippines. Here's the moment Netherlands wrapped up a stunning whitewash win over Scotland! 🇳🇱 SIXTEEN legs without reply for Danny Noppert and Gian van Veen in this tournament! 🤯#WCOD25 | Last 16 — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) June 14, 2025 The Welsh pair, who claimed the crown in 2020 and 2023, powered their way through to a last eight clash with Hong Kong with the minimum of fuss despite the first three legs going against the darts. However, Scotland's Peter Wright and Gary Anderson found themselves on the wrong end of a demolition job as they went down 8-0 to the Netherlands in just 15 minutes. Danny Noppert and world youth champion Gian Van Veen, who took out 130 to claim the fourth leg on Scotland's throw, were in inspired form, averaging 100.2 and converting eight of the 12 darts they had at doubles to breeze through to a meeting with the Czech Republic. William O'Connor and Keane Barry eased the Republic of Ireland to a showdown with neighbours Northern Ireland after an 8-3 victory over Switzerland in which they were always in control. Wales, Netherlands, Germany and Australia go through as Day Three comes to a close ✅ Some big shocks in Frankfurt! — PDC Darts (@OfficialPDC) June 14, 2025 Northern Ireland were comfortable winners over South Africa as Josh Rock and Daryl Gurney eased them to an 8-2 success. Elsewhere, there were wins for the Czechs over Malaysia and Hong Kong against Sweden.

Chelsea vs LAFC betting tips: Blues to get off to winning start in Club World Cup

Chelsea vs LAFC betting tips Chelsea face LAFC in Atlanta on Monday night in both clubs' opening match of the 2025 Club World Cup, with the Blues looking to build on a successful end to 2024/25. Enzo Maresca's side enter the new competition off the back of securing Champions League qualification and the Europa Conference League trophy, and the Italian will be looking forward to testing his side against some of the world's best this month. Chelsea aren't among the favourites for the competition – priced around 11/1 to win outright – but fans will be eager to see how they fare against a range of unusual opposition in the USA. And the first test comes against LAFC, the LA-based club that was only founded in 2014. The American side are currently in the middle of their own domestic season, sitting in fifth in the Western Conference, but are seen as heavy underdogs to get a result. Football betting sites are pricing Chelsea as 1/3 favourites, with LAFC offered at 17/2 and a draw priced as high as 15/4. Chelsea vs LAFC tips: Blues to earn straightforward win Despite a season that threatened to collapse at points late on, Chelsea rallied and put together some excellent form in the final few weeks as they secured fourth place in the Premier League and won the Conference League. The Blues have lost just once in their last 10 matches (2-0 away to Newcastle) but have conceded 10 goals in that time too, though several have been during big wins – such as the 4-1 wins over Real Betis and Djurgarden. LA have only lost one of their last 10 too, though they have managed five draws in those games and have conceded 16 times. But such is the gap between the two leagues that Chelsea obviously start as heavy favourites, with LA never having faced such a quality side in a competitive fixture in their entire history. While the timing of the match means it will likely be closer than otherwise anticipated, even a Chelsea side containing several second-string players should have more than enough to win and keep a clean sheet. And with that in mind, we're backing Chelsea to win to nil, which is offered at 13/10 with William Hill. Chelsea vs LAFC prediction 1: Chelsea to win to nil - 13/10 William Hill Chelsea vs LAFC prediction: Delap to net on debut As has been the case with several Premier League clubs, Chelsea have long been looking to add to their squad with a striker who will guarantee goals in the league. But unlike some of their rivals, the Blues have acted quickly and grabbed a potential bargain, with Liam Delap joining from Ipswich in a deal worth around £30m earlier this month. Delap scored 12 league goals for an Ipswich side who were eventually relegated last season, but he showed enough to impress some of the league's big clubs and was also a reported target for Manchester United and Newcastle. And having not played during the recent international break, the 22-year-old could make his debut for the club against LA. He'll be especially eager to impress during the tournament too, as he'll no doubt face competition for places with Nicolas Jackson, alongside another potential striker signing arriving later in the summer. And we're backing the youngster to make a good impression on his debut, with various betting sites offering odds of 6/5 on Delap to score anytime.
