Contactless payment scheme for homeless in Reading
A council has launched contactless donation points to help charities that combat homelessness.Reading Borough Council in partnership with Reading's Business Improvement District has launched Tap for Reading.The five tap points will be located around town and donations will be divided equally between four charities - Launchpad Reading, The Salvation Army, St Mungo's and YMCA Reading.Karen Rowland, lead councillor for environmental services and community safety, said: "By giving solely with a 'tap' it ensures your funds reach the right people in genuine need."
The tap points can be found at locations including The Oracle, Broad Street Mall and Reading Station.Donations are overseen by trained professionals to get individuals off the streets and back on their feet.Funds will provide practical support and essential items such as clothing, food and specialist courses to people who are, or have been, rough sleeping in Reading.
Ms Rowland explained that residents often feel "uncomfortably put upon and compelled to give money when asked" which she said "only leads to an increase in beggars who are sometimes aggressive and not actually homeless".She said: "Tap for Reading is now the best way to help our homeless in Reading."Together we can minimise the begging culture by not giving directly to those whose housing status or motivation may be unclear."Su Hamblyn, CEO of Launchpad Reading, said the initiative was "a great way for residents and visitors to support people, who are genuinely homeless in the town, with confidence".Dave Poulton, chief executive of YMCA Reading, said: "This is an opportunity for you to make a real difference via a network of local charities."All money donated will go to the council's homelessness charity partners who will ensure that funds are used for what is needed directly.

Piles of furniture in Hunstanton to be tidied by council
A council has been given permission to clear piles of household furniture from a property after complaints from neighbours it was attracting debris is stacked up in the front garden of the house in enforcement notice ordering the homeowner to clear it up expired last Monday, a planning committee at the Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk said its officers could remove it themselves. While the homeowner has made a start clearing the exterior, she told the BBC she strongly denied it was a health council issued a Section 215 enforcement notice, giving the homeowner a week to remove the rubbish herself. It expired on 27 the decision this week, the council could charge the occupant for any cleaning its officers have to do. Marie Bateson, who is volunteers director at the Association of Professional Declutterers and Organisers, said the waste could be a fire hazard."Open or food waste could entice rodents," she explained."There could be trip hazards if there's lots of things on the floor or things that would fall on them... if that person is unwell it's very, very, difficult for the emergency services to get in because there aren't clear pathways." Ms Bateson said there could be an impact on neighbours who felt their homes were devalued.A spokesperson for the Borough Council of King's Lynn and West Norfolk said: "The council is working with the owner to manage her property."Officers recognise that she has made an effort to clear the exterior and they will continue to support her to do this."However, they also have the council's authority to take direct action, which means that if it becomes necessary, a clear-up can be undertaken, for which she will be liable." Former Destiny's Child star Kelly Rowland joins The Voice UK coaching line-up
She will replace country singer LeAnn Rimes, who joined the 2024 series of the ITV singing show, which will also see Sir Tom Jones and last year's winning joint coaches, Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones from McFly, return this year. Speaking about joining the show, Rowland said: 'I am excited to join The Voice UK as a coach, and am looking forward to working with the excellent and passionate coaches the show is known for. She has also had four hit albums in the UK, including a number one in 2003's Simply Deep. The singer previously appeared as a judge on the eighth season of The X Factor UK, where she was credited with putting British girl group Little Mix together, who went on to win the show in 2011. She previously coached on the Australian version of The Voice between 2017 and 2020. Emma Willis will present the show once again, as contestants compete to win a record contract with Universal Music Group, £50,000 in cash, and a dream holiday to Universal Studios Resort in Florida. Willis said: 'I'm so excited to be back for another series of The Voice UK. 'It's one of the most joyful shows to work on – full of passion, talent and of course those unforgettable moments when the chairs turn. 'With our brilliant coaches returning and the utterly fabulous Kelly Rowland joining the panel, I know this series is going to be something really special.' The Voice UK announces Kelly Rowland as newest coach
Singer Kelly Rowland will take to one of the iconic red spinning chairs on the ITV singing competition. She joins Sir Tom Jones and plus Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones who return to coach together. Rowland is known for being part of girl group Destiny's Child and she's judged talent shows including The X Factor and The Voice Australia.
