Get your ID this holiday: Home Affairs extends hours for learners

IOL News07-07-2025
Home Affairs extends weekday operating hours to 6pm to help learners and other clients collect their IDs during the school holidays.
The Department of Home Affairs has announced that all offices will extend their operating hours by two hours daily from Monday until July 21.
During this period, offices will close at 6pm instead of 4pm on weekdays, giving learners and other clients more time to apply for and collect their identification documents during the school holidays.
A spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs, Siya Qoza, says the Department has also introduced dedicated counters for collections in larger offices that process Smart ID Cards and passports, where space permits.

Police fire rubber bullets at Germiston residents in housing stand-off

EKURHULENI - Police fired rubber bullets at residents who tried to block the eviction of scores of houses in Germiston on Tuesday by throwing stones and torching a municipal building, officials said. After police gained access to the housing complex in Ekurhuleni, a squad of men moved in and hauled furniture and personal belongings out of the homes. Shocked residents accused the government of failing them amid South Africa's housing crisis, saying they believed the homes were part of a scheme to provide houses for black South Africans disadvantaged by the previous racist apartheid system. Two people were arrested for setting alight the nearby offices of the municipal home affairs department, police said, adding they were acting on a June court order to evict people from the complex, which was reportedly home to 450 families. "Unfortunately, the people got wind of the eviction and closed the road. Innocent people and the police were thrown with stones and we had to retaliate to ensure that we dispersed them," Major General Fred Kekana, the deputy provincial police commissioner, told AFP. "Somebody allegedly threw a petrol bomb at the Department of Home Affairs. Two arrests have been made so far," he said. Some residents insisted they had not been issued an eviction order and had been paying rent for years. "Our government is failing us. They are chasing us yet we have titles for these houses," 37-year-old resident Akhona Mbadi, a mother of four children, told AFP. After taking power following the end of white minority rule in 1994, the African National Congress-led government adopted a Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) to provide subsidised housing and other services to black South Africans disadvantaged by apartheid. By 2017 nearly 14 percent of South African households lived in RDP or government-subsidised homes, according to government figures. However, homelessness has risen dramatically from 13,000 in 1996 to more than 55,700 in 2022, according to government statistics.

Capitec, FNB partner with Home Affairs to deliver Smart IDs

Capitec Bank and First National Bank (FNB) have signed up to the Department of Home Affairs' new digital partnership model that aims to expand access to Smart ID and passport services. The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Leon Schreiber, announced that the partnership will see the expansion of Smart ID and passport services from the existing 30 to hundreds more bank branches in urban and rural areas across South Africa. It will further expand these services to digital banking applications. 'In fulfilment of the target set by Cabinet in the Medium-Term Development Plan, which tasks Home Affairs with expanding its services to 1 000 bank branches by 2029, the Director-General of the department, Mr Tommy Makhode, on 30 April 2025 wrote to the Chief Executive Officers of ABSA, African Bank, TymeBank, Capitec Bank, Discovery Bank, First National Bank, Investec Bank, Nedbank, and Standard Bank, inviting them to join this transformative, digital-first new phase of the department's existing collaboration with the banking sector,' explained the department. It said the collaboration dates back more than a decade and has, until now, seen the successful delivery of Smart ID and passport services at only 30 branches across five different banks. The original model relied on the costly duplication of Home Affairs staff and hardware inside bank branches and failed to take advantage of technology to dramatically expand services into all rural and urban areas where bank branches already exist, as well as onto secure banking apps that have come to be widely used across society. The department said the new partnerships marked the beginning of the end for long travelling distances to reach Home Affairs services, for long queues, as well as for the Green ID book with its unacceptable vulnerability to fraud and identity theft. It is also the next step in the new digital-first era of public service delivery that the Government of National Unity is building, said the department. The Minister will visit Capitec and FNB this week to provide further information on how this reform will benefit all South Africans. On Tuesday, the Minister will visit Capitec Head Office in Stellenbosch and then on Wednesday he will visit FNB at the Portside Tower, in Cape Town. 'The department further reiterates its call for all other banks to similarly take up the invitation to work together, to ensure that all South Africans have access to Smart ID and passport services in their own communities. 'This reform marks a critical milestone on our journey to unlock the power of digital transformation to deliver Home Affairs @ home.' –
