Emotional twist for autistic girl heartlessly separated from her support dog at airport
An non-verbal autistic girl has been reunited with her support dog after the pet was blocked from accompanying her on a flight - leaving the child without her beloved pooch for several weeks.
Teddy, a Labrador, was accompanied by a trainer and departed from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for the flight to Lisbon, Portugal on Friday, according to the news outlet G1.
The ordeal began back on April 8, after 12-year-old Alice Porto, who suffers from autism, moved to Portugal with her family after her father, a doctor, accepted a job there.
The family was waiting to check in at the airport when a representative for TAP Air Portugal informed them that the ticket for Teddy had been cancelled the previous day because the dog's documents were not going to be accepted upon landing in Portugal.
After obtaining a court order and the proper documentation, a second attempt to get Teddy overseas on May 24 fell short when Teddy he was blocked from sitting with Alice's sister, Hayanne, on the flight because he was not traveling with the person to whom he provided support.
The airline suggested that the family place Teddy in the plane's hold, but they rejected the offer, arguing that he could not be placed in the cargo area because he was a service dog.
The airline countered that not doing so would ignore the company's operation guidelines and put the passengers and crew in danger.
Hayanne and Teddy were booked later in the day on another flight, which was delayed by three hours. Just as they were set to board, the airline obtained a court order allowing the aircraft to leave Brazil without Alice's sister and her dog.
To make matters worse, the family had to obtain another International Veterinary Certificate because the document would have expired by the time the flight arrived in Portugal.
The separation generated episodes of emotional distress for Alice, who spent all of last week awaiting for Teddy to arrive.
Her parents had a difficult time explaining why she had to wait to be reunited with Teddy.
'She communicates through an app,' her father told G1.
'We explained that it was an unforeseen event, but we can't explain this injunction situation and the real reason why the dog didn't board the plane.'
The failed attempts caused Silvio Costa Filho, Brazil's Minister of Ports and Airports, to intervene last Tuesday.
As part of the agreement between the airline and the family, Teddy was allowed to board the flight with Hayanne and Ricardo Cazarotte, who retired from training dogs for the São Paulo Military Police's kennel and who was responsible for training Teddy for a year and a half.
'We who train know how important this dog is. It must already be triggering several crises,' Cazarotte told Brazilian news outlet G1.
'If you take the autistic person out of his routine, it triggers aggression, anxiety. My role here is to organize this meeting, to make her happy and him happy too.'

Madeleine McCann: Search teams scour scrubland and abandoned buildings
Investigators are continuing to scour scrubland and abandoned buildings in the second day of the latest searches for missing Madeleine McCann. Teams of German and Portuguese police officers, as well as firefighters, face the daunting task of hunting for evidence 18 years on from the disappearance of the British three-year-old in 2007. This week's operation is focusing on a sparsely developed area of land around 3.5 miles from Praia da Luz, where Madeleine was last seen while on holiday with her parents and siblings. She vanished after she was left sleeping in a room with her toddler twin brother and sister while her parents went for dinner with friends in a nearby restaurant. Kate and Gerry McCann are not commenting during the 'active police investigation', staff at the Find Madeleine Campaign said. On Wednesday, officers were seen clearing vegetation around abandoned buildings, wearing protective gear such as hard hats and face masks, and a digger was used to move rubble. The area where they are working is an area of fields and scrubland between a main road and the sea, with a few buildings including a vineyard. It has been variously reported that teams will look where trenches were dug near the resort at the time of Madeleine's disappearance, at wells, ruins and water tanks, and that there are plans to examine 21 pieces of land. The search is being carried out at the request of the German federal police, as they look for evidence that could implicate prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who is in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005. He is due to be released from jail in September if no further charges are brought. In October last year, Brueckner was cleared by a German court of unrelated sexual offences, alleged to have taken place in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. About 30 German police, including forensic experts, are expected to take part in the search alongside Portuguese officers. The operation is expected to last until Friday. The Metropolitan Police said they were aware of the operation but that British officers will not be present. German investigators and Portuguese officers last carried out searches in 2023, near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz. Brueckner, who spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017, had photographs and videos of himself near the reservoir. It was previously searched in 2008, when Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia paid for specialist divers to search it, after he claimed to have been tipped off by criminal contacts that Madeleine's body was there. British police were later given permission to examine scrubland near where she vanished in 2014.

Searches for Madeleine McCann resume in Portugal countryside
Searches for Madeleine McCann have resumed in Portugal with police using a digger to clear debris around an abandoned building a miles from where the British toddler was last seen in 2007. On Wednesday, Portuguese and German authorities continued focusing on derelict structures in countryside a few miles from the resort of Praia da Luz. The fresh searches for Madeleine began on Tuesday, 18 years after the three-year-old disappeared from Praia da Luz while her parents were out having dinner, leaving her sleeping in a nearby room with her toddler twin siblings. The sounds of chainsaws and strimmers could be heard as investigators appeared to continue clearing areas of scrubland in Atalaia, on the outskirts of Praia da Luz. Police used a JCB to clear rubble around one building and also appeared to have emptied another nearby disused structure of debris. Bricks and rocks could be seen piled outside the graffitied structure. Personnel wore protective gear including as hard hats and face masks as they cleared vegetation around the structures. Officers stopped journalists from getting close to the search areas, which were cordoned off with police tape.
