‘Pakistan, Türkiye friendship form foundation of global peace'

ISLAMABAD: The Minister of State for Education and Professional Training, Wajiha Qamar, stated that the friendship and sincere brotherhood between Pakistan and Türkiye form the foundation of global peace and serve as an example for the international community.
She made these remarks during the prize distribution ceremony of a painting competition held at the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye, organised by the Yunus Emre Institute and Education Counsellor office on the theme of Pakistan-Türkiye friendship.
On this occasion, the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye, Dr Mehmet Irfan, and the Head of the Pakistan Chapter of the Yunus Emre Institute, Dr Halil Tokar, also addressed the gathering.
Minister Wajiha Qamar said that the friendship between Pakistan and Türkiye is not bound by time or circumstances. This is why both brotherly nations become restless to assist one another in times of trial, as if they are one and the same entity. The sincere role played by Türkiye during the recent Pakistan-India conflict reaffirmed this truth. She congratulated the Yunus Emre Institute for organising the painting competition and described it as a creative effort to pass on the sincere love between the two nations to future generations — an initiative that should continue. She also congratulated the students who won in the competition.
Ambassador Dr Mehmet Irfan congratulated the award-winning students and said that the artworks submitted by 1,500 participating students were not just paintings but a vivid representation of the deep friendship between the two brotherly countries. He added that the children have given us new hope through the power of their imagination.
Dr Halil Tokar remarked that Pakistan and Türkiye may be two countries, but they share one nation within. The Yunus Emre Institute will continue to work toward fostering cultural unity between them.
The painting competition organised by the Yunus Emre Institute was held in two categories.
In the first category (ages 7–11), Syed Shaheed Talha secured first position, Hadiya Amjad second, and Aniya Haroon third. Special prizes were awarded to Syeda Tayyaba Ghayur, Paghanda Ilyas, and Zarwa Naeem Khan.
In the second category (ages 12–16), Zainab Azhar, Rumaisa Fatima, and Aamna Jawad won first, second, and third places respectively, while Muhammad Saeed Awan, Saud Ajmal, Rumaisa Asif, Minha bint Khalid, and Rumaisa Anwar received special prizes.
The first, second, and third position holders were awarded cash prizes of PKR 100,000, PKR 50,000, and PKR 25,000 respectively, while each recipient of the special prizes received PKR 10,000.
The Yunus Emre Institute organised this painting competition in connection with Türkiye's National Sovereignty and Children's Day.

'Pakistan cannot survive without IMF'

Federal Minister for Investment, Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh, has said that Pakistan's economy cannot function without the International Monetary Fund (IMF), stressing that the country's survival and recovery are not possible without IMF support. Speaking at a post-budget seminar at Isra University, Sheikh said Pakistan is currently serving as a "gateway to global economic affairs" in the aftermath of the Pakistan-India conflict. He maintained that Pakistan offers some of the best investment opportunities in the region. "Seventeen months ago, Pakistan was heading toward default, and the currency was rapidly depreciating. Now, there are signs of improvement. But the fact remains, without the IMF our economy cannot progress. The IMF is instilling financial discipline that previous governments failed to maintain," Sheikh said. He acknowledged that over 50 percent of Pakistan's population still lives below the poverty line and that citizens are struggling. "People's living conditions are not improving, but with IMF support, expenditures are reducing and revenues increasing," he added. Commenting on regional dynamics, Sheikh said that India's economy is also slowing, while Pakistan has resources and opportunities to lead in the region, provided political and governance challenges are addressed. The minister admitted that insecurity in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan has hampered investment in coal mining and other sectors but said that the government, with support from security institutions, is working to improve the situation. He emphasized that the government is committed to attracting foreign investment, reducing the trade deficit, supporting SMEs, and enhancing entrepreneurial capacity among youth. Isra University Vice Chancellor Dr. Ahmed Waliullah Qazi, in his welcome address, highlighted the role of universities in linking policy, industry, and society. Dr. Hameedullah Qazi, President and CEO of Isra Islamic Foundation, said academic institutions play a vital role in raising awareness about fiscal policies and economic challenges. The seminar also featured senior economist Dr. Shahida Wizarat from IoBM Karachi, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Mirza Aqeel Baig, Associate Professor and Head of Economics at IoBM. Panelists included MPA Engineer Sabir Qaimkhani, Syed Aftab Mehmood Zaidi, who discussed the corporate sector's role in job creation; State Bank Assistant Director Israr Ahmed, who spoke on financial inclusion; Dr. Ismail Nami, former Vice President of Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders, who raised SME concerns.

MQM-P demands disaster-hit status for Karachi, exemption from taxes

In the wake of heavy losses amid torrential rains, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has demanded that Karachi be declared a disaster-hit area and taxes be exempted. MQM-Pakistan leader Dr Farooq Sattar, Syed Aminul Haq, Ali Khurshidi and MPAs held a press conference at the MQM's temporary headquarters in Bahadurabad on the current situation in the metropolis on Wednesday. Talking to the media, Sattar said that the government's callousness has restricted the citizens to their homes, adding the Pakistan People's Party-led provincial and city governments should admit their failures. He claimed that MQM-P leadership and activists remained on ground to help citizens who were stranded on the clogged roads for hours. The sense of insecurity among the citizens was seen to a greater extent during the rain spell, said the MQM-P leader, adding if a just system is established in Karachi, it is not a big deal to maintain a proper drainage system. He questioned how long the PPP will deceive people of Karachi with lame excuses. Despite usurping the resources and powers of the province, the provincial government has left the citizens of Karachi helpless, he said. He demanded that Karachi be declared a disaster-hit area and it be exempted from all federal and provincial taxes. Sattar said Karachi has been grappling with host of issues despite numerous resources, adding the city's drainage system can withstand 400mm of rain if drains are properly cleaned. He claimed that the Sindh government had collected Rs22 trillion in 17 years, but it did not spend even Rs22. 'Where are Jamaat-e-Islami and PTI in the whole situation?,' he asked. The MQM-P leader said the rain emergency organisation is dysfunctional despite several advisories of heavy rains in the city. The provincial government has practically separated Karachi from Sindh through its apathy towards the problems of the city. He further questioned on proceeds received from the NDMA as rain relief fund.
