‘Pakistan, Türkiye friendship form foundation of global peace'
ISLAMABAD: The Minister of State for Education and Professional Training, Wajiha Qamar, stated that the friendship and sincere brotherhood between Pakistan and Türkiye form the foundation of global peace and serve as an example for the international community.
She made these remarks during the prize distribution ceremony of a painting competition held at the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye, organised by the Yunus Emre Institute and Education Counsellor office on the theme of Pakistan-Türkiye friendship.
On this occasion, the Ambassador of the Republic of Türkiye, Dr Mehmet Irfan, and the Head of the Pakistan Chapter of the Yunus Emre Institute, Dr Halil Tokar, also addressed the gathering.
Minister Wajiha Qamar said that the friendship between Pakistan and Türkiye is not bound by time or circumstances. This is why both brotherly nations become restless to assist one another in times of trial, as if they are one and the same entity. The sincere role played by Türkiye during the recent Pakistan-India conflict reaffirmed this truth. She congratulated the Yunus Emre Institute for organising the painting competition and described it as a creative effort to pass on the sincere love between the two nations to future generations — an initiative that should continue. She also congratulated the students who won in the competition.
Ambassador Dr Mehmet Irfan congratulated the award-winning students and said that the artworks submitted by 1,500 participating students were not just paintings but a vivid representation of the deep friendship between the two brotherly countries. He added that the children have given us new hope through the power of their imagination.
Dr Halil Tokar remarked that Pakistan and Türkiye may be two countries, but they share one nation within. The Yunus Emre Institute will continue to work toward fostering cultural unity between them.
The painting competition organised by the Yunus Emre Institute was held in two categories.
In the first category (ages 7–11), Syed Shaheed Talha secured first position, Hadiya Amjad second, and Aniya Haroon third. Special prizes were awarded to Syeda Tayyaba Ghayur, Paghanda Ilyas, and Zarwa Naeem Khan.
In the second category (ages 12–16), Zainab Azhar, Rumaisa Fatima, and Aamna Jawad won first, second, and third places respectively, while Muhammad Saeed Awan, Saud Ajmal, Rumaisa Asif, Minha bint Khalid, and Rumaisa Anwar received special prizes.
The first, second, and third position holders were awarded cash prizes of PKR 100,000, PKR 50,000, and PKR 25,000 respectively, while each recipient of the special prizes received PKR 10,000.
The Yunus Emre Institute organised this painting competition in connection with Türkiye's National Sovereignty and Children's Day.

Only 14% MNAs attend all sittings of 16th NA session

PHOTO: FAFEN The 16th session of the National Assembly that spanned over 13 sittings between May 5 and 22, 2025, saw only 14% members making 100% attendance, while 9% of the members were absent during the entire session, the Free and Fair Election Network (FAFEN) said in its report on Thursday. Fafen is a civil society network focused on strengthening democracy. It said in its latest report that consistent with the previous sessions, female attendance was generally higher than that of their male counterparts during the session last month. "The highest attendance was recorded during the first sitting, with 237 members (76%) present. During this sitting, the House suspended its regular agenda to discuss the recent Pakistan-India conflict," the report said. The lowest attendance was recorded during the last sitting, with 174 members (55%) present. This sitting was initially adjourned after just 13 minutes because of the lack of quorum. The House reconvened after 15 minutes and passed The Off the Grid (Captive Power Plants) Levy Bill, 2025. Fafen said that 150 members of the National Assembly (MNAs) skipped sittings without advance leave request; 118 (44%) submitted a leave application, including 25 (21%) in advance and 37 (31%) applied ex-post facto after returning from their leave. It added that 268 members (86%) missed at least one sitting during the current session. The report said that 16 female MNAs, including 14 on reserved seats, attended all the sittings, while five female MNAs, including two on the reserved seats, recorded zero attendance. Region-wise, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Islamabad Capital Territory lawmakers recorded the highest percentage of MNAs attending more than half of the sittings, it said, adding that majority of lawmakers from the SIC, the PML-N, the JUI, and independents attended more than half of the sittings. A lack of ministerial presence weakened legislative oversight, Fafen said in the report. Among the 29 federal ministers, who were expected to be present during the Question Hour to respond to queries from lawmakers, only 15 (52%) were marked present during the sittings.

Bilawal briefs US lawmakers about India's belligerence

HCSTSI suggests targeted relief steps to boost economy
HYDERABAD: The President of Hyderabad Chamber of Small Traders & Small Industry (HCSTSI), Muhammad Saleem Memon, has formally submitted comprehensive budget proposals to the Federal Finance Minister ahead of the Federal Budget 2025–26, urging targeted relief measures for small traders, industrialists, and exporters to boost economic resilience and national growth. Memon emphasised that strengthening the business sector especially SMEs is vital to ensuring long-term economic stability. He stated that this is a critical opportunity for the government to stand firmly with the business community, especially amid ongoing tensions with neighbouring India, and send a strong message of national unity and economic strength to the global community. He stressed the urgent need to empower SMEs by maintaining tax exemptions on solar and wind energy, and by granting subsidies on electricity and gas tariffs. These measures, he explained, would help lower production costs and make Pakistani goods more competitive in international markets. To further support the sector, he called for easy access to low-interest loans, skill development He asked to allocate funds for the rehabilitation of SITE Area Hyderabad, especially road repairs, drainage, and water supply systems. He recommended a notable reduction in interest rates to encourage industrial growth and new ventures. On the export front, he proposed relaxing advance tax requirements, introducing export development schemes, and improving access to untapped global markets. He emphasised expansion of youth-focused vocational training and suggested tax incentives to foster innovation, research, and digital transformation to align Pakistan's industry with global standards. Memon also called for launching microfinance schemes and credit guarantee programs to promote financial inclusion. He strongly advocated for simplifying tax systems, licensing, and business registration to restore business confidence and foster government-business cooperation. A major highlight of his proposal was the demand to revise the mandatory POS registration threshold for small businesses. He recommended increasing the limit to PKR 350,000 monthly or PKR 70 million annually, protecting small traders from undue pressure. To broaden the tax net, he advised compulsory registration of distributors, dealers, and large retailers, along with identifying non-filers through property ownership, foreign travel, and luxury expenditures such as elite school fees.
