Rainbow Air Helicopter Tours emphasizes safety after New York City crash

Yahoo14-04-2025

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) — Rainbow Air Helicopter Tours offers panoramic views of Niagara Falls and attracts tourists from across the country and world, but Thursday's deadly helicopter crash in New York City has raised concerns about helicopter tours.
Safety has never been more apparent after the crash in the Hudson River, which killed a family of five who were on vacation from Spain and a pilot while they were on a tour around the city. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
Since 1995, Rainbow Air has offered tours in the restricted airspace around Niagara and Horseshoe Falls, with safety being its main priority.
'Flying over a natural wonder like Niagara Falls, there's only one place in the world where you can do this,' said Patrick Keyes, Rainbow Air's sales and marketing manager. 'We're lucky that we have that opportunity to fly in that short airspace with Canada and give people the panorama view that they want. They love it and we want to continue doing that. The only way we can continue to do that is if we're operating in a safe manner.'
Keyes said ensuring people's safety is a top priority.
'It's everything. Safety is what drives our entire experience,' Keyes said. 'We are very conscious in making sure we do every required check by the manufacturer and the FAA and by the company. We have our own standards and we meet or exceed those standards. If we don't, we're not gonna fly.'
While businesses in Niagara Falls prepare for this year's upcoming tourist season, Keyes said Rainbow Air is committed to keeping them safe.
Rainbow Air's team consists of pilots who have various military and medical evacuation backgrounds, according to its website, along with professional mechanics and maintenance workers who maintain the aircrafts every day.
'To have state of the art machines that are greatly maintained, full-time mechanics, people that have known these machines for a long time, it gives us a great step up,' he said. 'It's not something that everybody can do, but we're fortunate that we have the commitment from our ownership.'
Keyes added that professionals at Rainbow Air work every day to ensure a safe flying experience.

Diocese of Buffalo asks parishes to pay $80M toward $150M settlement

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Diocese of Buffalo announced on Monday its request for parishes to contribute a total of $80 million toward the $150 million it agreed to pay in April to settle over 800 claims of sexual abuse. Monday marked the Diocese's first meeting in a weeks-long process with parish leadership, where each parish will get a 'detailed statement of their expected contribution to the settlement fund,' the Diocese said. Over the past year, the Diocese decided to close and merge churches across Western New York in response to the claims. Around 54 parishes were originally affected by the downsizing announcement and 52 then submitted counterproposals, some of which were accepted. Contributions from parishes range from 10 to 80 percent, which is based on a 'progressive percentage' of each parish's self-reported and unrestricted assets as of August 2024. The Diocese said parishes that are scheduled to be closed or merged will face higher percentages. Parishes that are in the process of appealing closures are still expected to pay 80 percent, but if the appeal is approved, the parish will be refunded the difference of the 80 percent and the rate it would've paid if it didn't face closure. 'As we have maintained throughout this protracted process, the participation of the entire Catholic family is necessary to bring to a close this painful chapter of our Diocese and achieve a level of restitution that is owed to the many who have had to carry the tremendous burden of physical, emotional and spiritual harm of sexual abuse throughout their lives,' said Bishop Michael Fisher. Other contributions are said to be expected from the Diocese, affiliate Catholic organizations, proceeds from real estate sales and coverages by diocesan insurance carriers. A federal judge ruled on Friday that most of the money from the sale of Christ the King Seminary, located in East Aurora, cannot be used toward the $150 million settlement. The proceeds totaled over $4 million. All payments are due to the Diocese by July 15. Katie Skoog joined the News 4 team in April 2024. She is a graduate from the University at Buffalo. McDougall Insurance merges with Keyes Insurance

McDougall Insurance has merged with Keyes Insurance, a family brokerage in Halifax, Nova Scotia, marking its entry in the Atlantic Canadian region. The merger with Keyes Insurance, which has a 45-year history, is set to enhance the service capabilities for clients and staff of both entities. Keyes Insurance president Shaun Keyes will retain his leadership role within the family-run brokerage and oversee McDougall's activities in Atlantic Canada. Keyes stated: 'This partnership significantly increases our expertise in commercial insurance, specifically construction, real estate and manufacturing. Adding offerings like these, risk management services and specialty underwriting, as well as increasing our market access, will help us grow and strengthen what we offer to our clients, our staff and the region we proudly serve as a premiere Atlantic Canadian commercial and personal insurance brokerage.' McDougall Insurance CEO Ross McDougall said: 'We have always grown by partnering with insurance brokerages across Canada that share our core values. Keyes fits that bill perfectly. 'Their family roots, commitment to exceptional customer service, and dedication to their community align seamlessly with how we operate. They are the perfect partner to bring what we do to Halifax, Nova Scotia and Atlantic Canada.' This development follows McDougall's previous merger with Duliban Insurance, which operates in the Niagara and Haldimand regions. Jason Duliban continued in his role as principal broker at Duliban Insurance and joined McDougall Insurance's national leadership team. Adam Duliban, also a principal broker, will contribute during a transitional phase before shifting his focus to the expansion and management of other family owned assets. The Duliban brand will be maintained as a divisional brokerage under McDougall Insurance. "McDougall Insurance merges with Keyes Insurance " was originally created and published by Life Insurance International, a GlobalData owned brand. Hispanic Heritage Council receives $7M for construction of cultural institute

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Hispanic Heritage Council of Western New York will receive $7 million from New York State to complete the construction of its cultural institute on Buffalo's West Side, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Sunday. The council's plans for the multi-use 37,000-square-foot facility on the corner of Niagara and Hudson Streets was first announced in 2019, but it has since faced delays due to COVID-19. Hochul described the investment as a 'gap-filling' initiative for phase two of the institute, which will serve as a hub for Hispanic history, arts and community. The $30 million facility broke ground in September 2023 at the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month. The council plans for the institute to house a museum, 150-seat performing arts theater, event spaces, cafe, media center and learning labs. 'We are deeply grateful to Governor Hochul for her unwavering support of the Hispanic Heritage Cultural Institute. This historic investment is not just a milestone for the Buffalo Hispanic community — it's a gift to all of Western New York,' said Casimiro Rodriguez, the council's president and founder. 'As the first of its kind, this institute will serve as a vibrant hub for arts, culture, education, and heritage, drawing visitors from near and far, including our Canadian neighbors. It will enrich our region's cultural landscape and strengthen our identity as a welcoming and diverse community. The future is bright, and we are filled with hope and gratitude as we take this giant step forward together.' Hochul said the previous announcement in 2023 of a $5 million grant, along with additional funding, will continue to help with the completion of the project's second phase and grand opening. 'New Yorkers of Puerto Rican heritage have been an integral part of our state's cultural fabric for generations,' Hochul said. 'We are honored to make bold investments that will empower organizations to expand and thrive, ensuring that the vibrant presence of Puerto Rican culture in New York State remains a cherished aspect of our state's identity.' The council also received $1 million in federal funding in August 2023 for construction. Katie Skoog joined the News 4 team in April 2024. She is a graduate from the University at Buffalo.
