Mountain lion attacks child on popular trail in Olympic National Park

Yahoo21-07-2025
A 4-year-old child was attacked and injured over the weekend by a mountain lion while walking with family on a popular trail in Olympic National Park, park officials said Monday.
Park rangers were notified of the attack at around 3:15 p.m. Sunday, with initial reports saying that a collared mountain lion bit the child near the park's Victoria Overlook area on Hurricane Ridge, according to a park news release.
Clallam County Fire District 2 paramedics and park staff responded, and the victim was flown to a trauma center, the news release said. The child was undergoing treatment as of Monday. The park, which said it was withholding identifying information to protect the child's privacy, did not provide details of the child's condition.
With assistance from a canine team, park rangers located the mountain lion shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday and 'dispatched the animal' — a term commonly used to describe killing — on Monday morning, the news release said.
Park officials said there were no current threats to the public and that the incident remained under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the attack is encouraged to call 888-653-0009 or email nps_isb@nps.gov.

10-year-old boy ditched at airport by parents who realized his passport was expired upon arrival at airport

An unnamed mother and father allegedly abandoned a 10-year-old boy at an airport in Spain and boarded without him after realizing his passport was expired In a scene one airport staffer described as "utterly surreal,' a couple allegedly abandoned their 10‑year‑old son at a Spanish airport after discovering his travel documents were invalid. With the boy's Spanish passport expired and no visa in hand, the parents reportedly opted to board their flight anyway—arranging for a relative to meet and collect him at the terminal while they departed. An airport staffer claims to have witnessed the incident According to Lilian—a staff coordinator who shared the incident in a TikTok video now viewed by hundreds of thousands—the child told authorities his parents were already on board and en route to their home country for vacation. When airport and police personnel located the boy alone, they immediately informed the plane's pilot, who then asked passengers if anyone had left a child behind. No one came forward. Eventually, officers identified the parents, who were traveling with another younger child. They were taken to the airport's police station—along with the boy—after authorities removed their six suitcases from the flight. Lilian questioned how someone could calmly board a plane and leave a 10‑year‑old unattended, even with assurances a relative would arrive within an hour or more. The fate of the parents is still unknown It's not yet known whether the parents have been formally charged or faced any legal consequences. Their nationality hasn't been disclosed, and the claims remain unverified beyond the coordinator's TikTok account. Not the 1st case of children left behind or unattended at airports Back in 2018, a couple in Germany forgot their five-year-old daughter at Berlin's Stuttgart Airport, claiming they'd each thought the other parent had taken charge of her. More recently, an unattended two-year-old was swept away on a luggage conveyor belt and dropped down a chute at New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport in late May. Driver injured after falling tree crushes car in Holliston

A man is hospitalized after the car he was driving was hit by a falling tree in Holliston, Massachusetts. The fire department said it happened on Prentice Street just before 2:30 on Friday afternoon. Video from SkyEye showed the van had severe damage to the windshield and the driver's side front door. One woman who lives on that street told WBZ-TV she heard the crash from her bathroom and ran out to find the car was on top of tree branches. "It had a big branch underneath it. I thought maybe the guy ran over the tree and I went up to the vehicle and part of the tree fell into the car and I called 911 right away," said the woman who did not want to be identified. When paramedics arrived, the woman said they pulled the man out of the passenger side of the car. Holliston fire officials said the driver was ultimately flown to a hospital in Worcester. His condition is unknown. Back on Prentice Street, the woman we spoke with said she and her sister had been complaining about dead trees along the road for weeks. Their concern was that they would ultimately fall into the road or onto their house. "We have noticed that these trees are dead, and we have been calling the town asking if they can remove them and then this happened," said the woman. WBZ-TV reached out to the Holliston Town Manager for this report but have not heard back.

Minneapolis police impressed by Lotus worker who used jiu-jitsu to fight off attacker

The downtown Minneapolis worker attacked while taking out the garbage has been given an opportunity to serve and protect his community. Jezarius Sheldon got the attention of the Minneapolis Police Department, which is looking for recruits. Sheldon, 19, is counting his blessings that no one was seriously hurt when a verbal assault outside Lotus turned violent, and he was forced to defend himself. He says that while talking to the police, he was presented with an incredible opportunity. "He said I was very impressed the way that I held my own, and the way that I performed, considering the circumstances, I was very controlled, I was very disciplined in my actions, and he was like, 'You would do well as a police officer,'" said Sheldon. Sheldon says he was flattered, but he has plans to serve the public in a different way. He is a nursing student at the University of Minnesota. "I do want to be a nurse, that's the goal," said Sheldon. On scholarship for his good grades, he wants to continue a family health care legacy. "The fact that I get to go and pursue my education somewhere like the U of M, it's a blessing, and I'm very grateful," said Sheldon. What he does want is safety for his coworkers and others who work in this corner of Loring Park. "We see people who are physically violent outside our store, people urinate on our sidewalk, defecate on our sidewalk, call us names. I've been spit on, I've been hit," said Jim Connelly, who works at a neighboring business, Rainbow Road. Five weeks ago, Connelly's store was robbed. "A young man came in, masked, body totally covered, put a knife by my back, put a knife up my throat, put me down on my knees and then opened the till and took the money out," said Connelly. He hopes people contact Minneapolis City Hall to ask for more police and protection for areas plagued by crime. "We have no response from police; the police are too busy. The response from City Hall is, 'We're going to look into it. We're going to form a committee. We're going to think about how we're going to get this resolved.' But after 29 years, it's only gotten worse because it's never gotten better," said Connelly. Jezarius says he does not hate his attacker. Police have stepped up patrols by Lotus. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the attack.
