Mountain lion attacks child on popular trail in Olympic National Park

Yahoo6 days ago
A 4-year-old child was attacked and injured over the weekend by a mountain lion while walking with family on a popular trail in Olympic National Park, park officials said Monday.
Park rangers were notified of the attack at around 3:15 p.m. Sunday, with initial reports saying that a collared mountain lion bit the child near the park's Victoria Overlook area on Hurricane Ridge, according to a park news release.
Clallam County Fire District 2 paramedics and park staff responded, and the victim was flown to a trauma center, the news release said. The child was undergoing treatment as of Monday. The park, which said it was withholding identifying information to protect the child's privacy, did not provide details of the child's condition.
With assistance from a canine team, park rangers located the mountain lion shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday and 'dispatched the animal' — a term commonly used to describe killing — on Monday morning, the news release said.
Park officials said there were no current threats to the public and that the incident remained under investigation. Anyone who witnessed the attack is encouraged to call 888-653-0009 or email nps_isb@nps.gov.

Dozens Are Killed by ISIS-Linked Rebels at a Church in Congo

Dozens of people were killed on Sunday in an attack on a church in eastern Congo by a rebel group linked to the Islamic State. The rebels, armed with guns and machetes, attacked the church in the city of Komanda around 1 a.m. while more than 100 people were holding a nighttime prayer vigil, according to local residents. More bodies were found in burned houses nearby. The U.N. peacekeeping mission in the country, citing official reports, said that 43 people had died, including nine children. The Congolese Army said about 40 had been killed. Children, mostly between the ages of 12 and 14, were taken hostage, according to the priest at the church, Sainte Anuarite. The parish was holding a celebration for its 25th anniversary when it was attacked. Missionaries from Italy serve in the church, and the country's deputy prime minister condemned the assault, saying that places of worship must be protected. In a letter shared with The New York Times, the church had in June requested security from the local authorities ahead of the events. 'Unfortunately, no intervention took place during the attack,' said Father Aimé Lokana Dhego, the priest at the church. He said the army and U.N. forces arrived only afterward 'to count and assess the dead and damages.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Ukraine drone attack disrupts Volgograd railway power, Russia says

(Reuters) -Falling debris from destroyed Ukrainian drones disrupted railway power supply and train operations in part of the Volgograd region, the administration of the region in Russia's south said on Sunday. There were no injuries as a result of the attacks, the administration said on the Telegram messaging app, citing Governor Andrei Bocharov. Russia's defence ministry said on Telegram that its air defence units had destroyed nine Ukrainian drones over the region. In total Russia downed 99 drones overnight over 12 Russian regions, the Crimean Peninsula and the Black Sea, the ministry said. Russia's civil aviation authority Rosaviatsia said on Telegram that it had suspended flights soon after midnight at the airport in the city of Volgograd, the administrative centre of the Volgograd region. The flights had not resumed on Sunday morning. Because of the attack, trains were delayed in parts of the region, RIA state news agency reported. The extent of the damage inflicted by the Ukrainian drone attack was not clear. The Russian defence ministry reports only how many drones its units destroy, not how many Ukraine launches. There was no comment from Ukraine. Kyiv has often said that its attacks are in response to Moscow's relentless strikes on Ukraine since Moscow invaded in 2022 and are aimed at destroying infrastructure key to Russia's war efforts.

DR Congo church attack kills more than 30 worshippers

An attack on a church in Komanda in northeastern DR Congo killed more than 30 worshippers, local officials said Sunday. Local sources said rebels from the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a group that has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group, stormed the church during a Saturday night service and killed 31 worshippers. Seven other bodies were discovered in the town. At least 35 people were killed Sunday in an attack by Allied Democratic Forces rebels in northeastern DR Congo, ending a months-long period of regional calm, local sources told AFP. The ADF, originally formed from former Ugandan rebels and which pledged allegiance to Islamic State in 2019, raided a Catholic church in the town of Komanda where worshippers were gathered for prayer, residents told AFP by telephone from Bunia, capital of Ituri province. "Last night around 9 pm (1900 GMT), we heard gunfire near the parish church... so far we have seen 35 bodies," Dieudonne Katanabo, an Umoja neighbourhood elder, told AFP. "We have at least 31 dead members of the Eucharistic Crusade movement, with six seriously injured... some young people were kidnapped, we have no news of them," Father Aime Lokana Dhego, parish priest of the Blessed Anuarite parish of Komanda, told AFP. The priest added that seven other bodies had been discovered in the town. Lieutenant Jules Ngongo, army spokesman in Ituri, did not comment on the toll but confirmed the attack to AFP, stating that "the enemy is believed to have been identified among ADF" rebels. The bloodshed comes after months of calm in the region of Ituri, bordering Uganda. The last major attack by the ADF was in February, leaving 23 dead in Mambasa territory. The town of Komanda in Irumu territory is a commercial hub linking three other provinces -- Tshopo, North Kivu, and Maniema. The ADF, originally Ugandan rebels who are predominantly Muslim, has killed thousands of civilians and ramped up looting and killing in northeastern DRC despite the deployment both of the Ugandan army alongside Congolese armed forces in the area. At the end of 2021, Kampala and Kinshasa launched a joint military operation against the ADF, dubbed "Shujaa", which has so far been unable to dislodge the group. (FRANCE 24 with AFP)
