Double gold medal success for teenage Cumbrian boxer

Yahoo5 days ago
Teenage Cumbrian boxing prospect John Paul Miller has added two more gold medals to his growing collection of titles.
The Wigton Amateur Boxing Club star, 16, came out on top in the Teesside Box Cup and the Warehouse Box Cup in Swansea.
John Paul, from Carlisle, got the better of a series of strong opponents with some outstanding displays, according to his Wigton ABC coach Andi Crossman, who is tipping the 66kg teenager for a big future in the sport.
First John Paul defeated Southampton's Reuben James in the Teesside semi-final before outboxing Darlington's Darren Omar in the final.
Crossman told the News & Star: 'His opponent in the semi-final was a big strong kid who wanted to hold on a bit, but John Paul used his boxing knowledge and came out on top.
'Against the kid in the final, who'd received a bye, John Paul gave him a standing eight count in the second round and got through to a points decision, taking gold.

'With confidence really high, we entered him into the Warehouse Box Cup in Swansea, where John Paul fell lucky this time, getting a bye to the final.
'When we watched the semi-final, the lad who won, Freddie Norman, was huge. He dropped his opponent and was so, so strong.
'So we had to come up with a game plan to take his power away from him, and get John Paul moving on his toes all the time, just counter-punching.
'In the final, he boxed a punch-perfect performance. It was unbelievable – the kid couldn't do a thing with him.
'Massive respect to him [Freddie Norman] – he came over at the end and said John Paul was the trickiest lad that he's ever boxed. He was really experienced and had only lost a handful of fights out of 30.
'John Paul followed every single instruction to a T and came out with another gold. He was awesome.'
The young boxer, who in March won the under-63kg north west category of the England Boxing National Junior Championships, is showing all the signs of being a top prospect, according to his coach.
'He does as he's told, he works hard, he does his training – and he is going to be something special, I know that,' Crossman said.
'He's a credit to his parents, he's so well-mannered, well-polite. He's left school now and has got a job, and he still comes to his training with the same discipline.
'He always walks into the gym with a smile on his face. His mum and dad are brilliant people, who help out in the gym, and his sister comes down and trains too.

'They're a brilliant family, so supportive of John Paul.'
Crossman said John Paul is due to compete in another Box Cup in September as he aims to fuel his big ambitions in boxing.
'We want to get a couple of national titles into him, boxing in the open class championships. I definitely want to try and get him to a senior title,' the coach said.
'Then John Paul wants to turn professional, so I'm not going to stop him doing that. I've got my professional coaching license, so there's nothing to stop him doing that here.
'That's all in good time though – we're not going to rush him. When he's ready we'll talk about it after that.
'He's an inspiration to all the kids at our club. He's going out, he's winning and they aspire to be just like him. He's well-mannered, well-schooled and his attitude to boxing is also to be admired.'
Wigton ABC are also preparing for their home show at the Greenhill Hotel on September 30, which Crossman said sold out in under 12 hours.
'We've got some old boxers and we've got some new boxers,' he said. 'We've got people like Robbie Pattinson making a comeback, we've got Lewis Hand and Eddie Graham coming back.
'We've got new boxers coming through as well. My own son Dalton, who's just turned 12, is going for his first competitive bout. I'm excited about that as well.
'There's loads to look forward to.'
Wigton ABC also run a range of further sessions at the club, including a free health and wellbeing session on Saturday mornings, and a female-only class.

'Real quality' - coach hails Embleton's pre-season efforts for Blues

Elliot Embleton is showing plenty of his quality as he aims to make a positive fresh start for Carlisle United in 2025/26. That is the view of coach Gavin Skelton, who says the former Sunderland and Blackpool man's attributes have been clear this summer. Embleton, 26, has put himself firmly in the frame for a starting role in the Blues' opening game of the National League season at Woking on Saturday. The January signing scored his first goal for the club, from the penalty spot in the 2-0 win at Chester. That came at the end of a pre-season where Embleton has featured regularly for Mark Hughes' side in an attacking midfield role. First-team coach Skelton agreed that Embleton's ability was clear. 'Amongst a number, he's shown real quality,' said Skelton. 'Top players have that. It's not just on the ball, it's their understanding of the game.' Carlisle United announce sell-out for National League opener at Woking Signs of Embleton's prominence in pre-season are clear with the midfielder having played the fourth most minutes in United's friendlies in the full squad. Carlisle hope he can play an influential role in their bid to make a positive start to the new fifth-tier season. Embleton endured a difficult start to his Carlisle career after joining in Blackpool in last winter's transfer window, with the player coming in for stick from some fans as United crashed to relegation. Yet now he appears a strong contender to be in Hughes' opening-day XI at the Kingfield Stadium, in the number ten position behind an attack that looks set to include impressive summer signing Regan Linney. Arne Slot's SECRET weapon hints at Liverpool transfer plan

Throughout pre-season, teams are hoping to build players fitness and integrating new players. Liverpool's plan to achieve this has been playing two games in England and two in South East Asia. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas home range 🚨2025/26 LFC x adidas range🚨 LFC x adidas Shop the home range today! Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, Florian Wirtz, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Hugo Ekitike and Armin Pecsi have all been given minutes in the set-up and we've been given an early look at Arne Slot's plans. 🔴 Shop the LFC 2025/26 adidas away range But alongside getting them up to speed with Liverpool's style of play, the ambition is not for us to play exactly as we did last season to win the Premier League; in order to succeed we must evolve. So the games we've seen this summer have not just been about bringing new dynamics to the side in terms of different personnel, but also in terms of finding different tactical approaches to utilise. Secret weapon up Slot's sleeve One idea that seems to be rising in popularity is the long-throw as a way to pile pressure on teams. It was Mikel Arteta's initial thinking that gave them a new lease of life last season, although of course fans mocked them for it, claiming it was just another step in the evolution of them becoming Stoke. But there is a genuine reason why the Gunners added it to their set-up and Slot has recognised this. So long as it's accurate, the long-throw can be a little bit like a corner kick, creating a chance for the tall players in the opposition's box to create a threatening attack out of nowhere. It's quite genius. This pre-season, Liverpool have been trying it out from time to time and Darwin Nunez has been one player able to benefit from the move - towering over the defenders to get an effort at goal or pass to someone outside of the crowded pack to set-up a chance. But what might this all mean long-term? Before we signed Hugo Ekitike, the Frenchman was linked with Newcastle and if he had joined the Magpies then a 4-4-2 system alongside Alexander Isak could have been utilised by Eddie Howe. That specific style of play would likely use long-throws because you have two tall strikers waiting to get their head on the ball during the set-plays in the box. And now you might start to see what I'm trying to get at, since Ekitike is already a Red and Isak is heavily linked with a move to Merseyside. Of course a 4-4-2 would involve Liverpool abandoning their 4-2-3-1 set-up, with a midfielder losing out, which seems difficult to envisage given how important the engine room is to Slot's play style. But when the team is against an opposition that has a particularly threatening attack, then two strikers and a low block might be useful to occasionally deploy, with long-throws being used. If Isak is to join the Reds then the system does not necessarily have to change. Two strikers at in the attacking ranks feels like a pretty mundane thing for a team to have, although the transfer fees that Liverpool would have paid for them will have been significant. Nonetheless, it feels like Slot is willing to experiment with his players this season, after adjusting to Jurgen Klopp's side last season. And to say that it's exciting to have a multi-faceted team that is capable of delivering success beyond what the Reds achieved last season is a bit of an understatement. It's genuinely tantalising.

Florian Wirtz says pressure of Liverpool price tag ‘doesn't matter': ‘I just want to play football'

Florian Wirtz insists his price tag will not weigh him down at Liverpool as he prepares for a season of scrutiny. The 22-year-old attacker will become the most expensive player in the history of British football if the add-ons in his £116million transfer from Bayer Leverkusen are triggered. Wirtz knows the rest of the Premier League will be watching closely as expectations rise, but insists he's ready for the challenge. Advertisement 'I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter,' the German said to reporters in the mixed zone after the pre-season friendly with Athletic Club. 'I came because I thought I could fit in this team and I am enjoying to stay with these players. I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me. 'I will try to find the right places to be and the right spaces to get on the ball and to be dangerous and create chances.' Wirtz says he has settled in well and is enjoying the new environment after leaving Germany for the first time in his short career. His experienced team-mates have already warned him what to expect when the Premier League starts but he says that doesn't faze him. 'They tell me it's more intense and more physical and that every player is really strong, really fast,' he adds. 'I am really looking forward to play there and experience some differences to Germany but I think there is also something I can learn and make me better. 'It is good that we have a few players that arrive at the same time so we can connect and talk to each other about how we deal with things That helps when you come to a new team. 'The big challenge is to win the title again and it is the most difficult thing to do. 'I will just try to create chances and work hard off the ball and run a lot to help make the team better.' It's early days for the record signing but already he's beginning to show the impact he can have. Arne Slot has worked closely with him in training to show exactly where he wants him to fit in. For a player so gifted on the ball, it's striking how much effort he puts in off it. In Liverpool's win over Athletic Club in the final pre-season outing of the summer, Wirtz was both industrious and creative. What stood out most was his movement off the ball. He consistently found space in between the lines, allowing team-mates Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai the freedom to flourish close by. Advertisement As Wirtz told reporters ahead of the new season, he's committed to putting in the hard yards for the team and that will only strengthen the Premier League champions. His ball-carrying ability and talent in leading counter-attacks are well known, but it's the all-round nature of his game that makes him such and exciting prospect.
