Lewis Hamilton hit with penalty after Max Verstappen clash in Monaco GP qualifying
Lewis Hamilton has been handed a three-place grid penalty for the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday.
The seven-time F1 world champion recorded his best grand prix qualifying result for Ferrari and was set to start fourth on the grid on Sunday.
Yet in Q1, Hamilton was involved in an impeding incident with Max Verstappen. The Brit's race engineer, Riccardo Adami, originally told his driver that Verstappen was on a fast lap, before stating he was on a slow lap.
Hamilton veered slightly on the racing line, but Verstappen was indeed on a push lap. Hamilton said: 'You said he was slowing down, f*** sake man!'
The stewards investigated the incident after the session, with the 40-year-old now dropping from fourth to seventh. Hamilton was pictured apologising to Verstappen after qualifying.
The penalty also means Verstappen, who qualified fifth, will now start alongside Oscar Piastri on the grid in fourth spot. Isack Hadjar moves up to fifth, with Fernando Alonso now starting sixth.
Hamilton said afterwards: 'It is very difficult to keep out of the way of everybody, I was doing a good job.
'But then the team said Max was on a fast lap, then they said he wasn't. I was about to get back on power, accelerated for 10m, I was off the line, but did have an impact on him.'
Verstappen, speaking after qualifying, did acknowledge it the scenario wasn't Hamilton's fault but did believe the Ferrari driver should be penalised.
'It's not nice, the team told him I was driving slow when I was clearly driving fast,' he said.
'It's not Lewis' fault. I already spoke to him about it. It's the team's mistake.'
Asked if he believes Hamilton should get a penalty, he replied: 'If you look at the history of things, yes. Normally in qualifying, they're quite strict on these things.'
Lando Norris took pole position with a terrific final lap, with home hero Charles Leclerc in second.
The 78-lap race has added intrigue this year, with each car required to run three different set of tyres - which is likely to make two pit-stops a mandatory requirement.

Napoli will compete in next summer's Champions League, having won Serie A. But Tottenham Hotspur, who will be one of England's representatives in the competition, are not expected to enter the race to sign Grealish.

WSL to expand to 14 teams in league overhaul - but women's top flight WILL keep relegation amid concern it could be scrapped
The Women's Super League (WSL) will expand to 14 teams starting from the 2026/27 season, with relegation retained following widespread concern over initial reports it might be scrapped. The WSL has featured 12 teams since the 2019/20 season, but clubs have now voted to admit two additional sides at the end of the 2025/26 campaign – subject to approval by the FA board. The top two teams from WSL2 (formerly the Women's Championship) will earn automatic promotion next season. The team finishing bottom of the WSL will face a play-off against the third-placed WSL2 side for a place in the top-flight. And then from the 2027/28 season onwards, the 14th-placed WSL team will be automatically relegated and replaced by the WSL2 champions. A promotion/relegation play-off will also be introduced between the 13th-placed WSL team and the WSL2 runners-up to determine the final spot in the top division. The top three WSL teams will continue to qualify for the Women's Champions League while there are no other changes to the format of the leagues – with a double round-robin also being retained. The second tier will continue as a 12-team league with additional promotion opportunities to fill the extra vacancies yet to be decided by the FA, who runs the rest of the women's pyramid. Nikki Doucet, CEO of WSL Football – the governing body overseeing the top two tiers of the women's game in England – said: 'Over the past few months, WSL Football has led a thorough and robust, consultative process backed by research and analysis which explored multiple options that could drive the game forward and help it reach its potential. 'Our priority was to find a route that would benefit the whole women's game pyramid, and we believe this next evolution of women's professional football will raise minimum standards, create distinction and incentivise investment across the board. 'Subject to the approval from The FA Board, expanding the BWSL to 14 teams will stimulate movement between leagues and through the pyramid which increases opportunities. The introduction of a promotion/relegation playoff creates distinction for the women's game and introduces a high-profile, high stakes match.'

Isle of Man TT crash 'wasn't my fault'
Peter Hickman has revealed that his high-speed crash at the Isle of Man TT, in which he suffered multiple fractures, was caused by a component 14-time TT winner crashed at the Kerrowmoar section of the Mountain Course while taking part in a qualifying session for the event, held on closed public roads, on the evening of Friday, 30 38-year-old was flown to Noble's Hospital on the island by Airmed helicopter after the incident, where he was treated for his injuries, before being who holds the absolute lap record for the 37.73-mile circuit, sustained chest, back, shoulder and facial injuries in the crash."I've broken my left collarbone, my left scapula and my shoulder blade down the back is in three pieces. I broke three ribs and four vertebrae in my back so not ideal," explained Hickman in a video posted on his Facebook page."Unfortunately, it was a component failure [which caused the crash] so it wasn't actually my fault."It was some bracketry that holds the exhaust in place. It didn't come loose, it broke in theory, and pushed the exhaust into the rear wheel and popped the rear tyre. That was why I crashed."Hickman was riding his Superstock BMW machine for the 8TEN Racing team he recently formed with fellow racer Davey Todd when he crashed."I'm pretty battered and bruised all over the place but I just want to say a massive thanks to the medics and the marshals that looked after me at the time. They did a fantastic job."I don't remember much about it because I was knocked out."I don't remember the lap leading up to it and the first time I properly woke up, I woke up in hospital, so that was a bit of a new experience for me in my 25-year career. I've never been knocked out before."Hickman has been a regular competitor at the TT since making his debut at the races in 2014."I've been going to the Isle of Man TT for 10 years and this is the first major problem that I've had," he said.
