India's first Asian Skating Trophy meet in Dehradun having country's lone Olympic-sized ice rink

Sharing the details, Amitabh Sharma, President ISAI informed that the Asian Open Short Track Speed Skating Trophy 2025, ever hosted in the country will be organised from August 20 to 23
here.
The international skating tournament will witness participation from 11 Asian nations China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, India, Japan, Singapore, Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines competing in nine distances ranging from 222 metre sprints to 5000 metres relays.
According to Sharma, the championship will be held in junior and senior categories.
Nearly 240 skaters and officials will take part in the event with a contingent size of 18 from China, 27 from Hong Kong, 11 Indonesia, 13 Japan, eight from Malaysia, two players from Philippines, five from Singapore, 25 from Thailand, 19 Chinese Taipei, 16 Vietnam and 95 members from India.
Sanctioned by the International Skating Union (ISU) and organized by the Ice Skating Association of India (ISAI), "This event signifies a bold leap for India's presence on the global ice sports map. All winter sports especially ice sports in India are still in a nascent stage of their growth. But with the revival of the Dehradun ice rink, it's like our tryst with destiny. This is the only international class ice rink to host a tournament like this,' said Amitabh Sharma, President ISAI.
He added 'We are building a future where India can host even larger events like the Junior World Cup by 2027. While it's India's Dream to host the 2036 Olympics, this event is a way to showcase our capabilities, experience and hospitality to the world' added Sharma, who is also a member of the Indian Olympic Association Executive Council.
It's notable that Dehradun based Himadri Ice Rink is India's only Olympic-sized ice rink to host Asian ice skating champion of international class ratified by ISU. The rink remained shut for several years due to high maintenance costs, and is now a symbol of resurgence, having recently hosted the 20th National Skating Championships.

CM unveils trophy, mascot for men's Hockey Asia Cup
1 2 Patna: CM Nitish Kumar on Sunday unveiled the trophy and authorised the 'Shubhankar Chand' (mascot) for the 10-day men's Hockey Asia Cup 2025, to be held at the Rajgir Sports Complex in Nalanda district from Aug 29 to Sept 9. National teams from eight Asian countries will compete in the event. The unveiling ceremony was organised at the Sankalp auditorium of the CM's official residence. While the Asia Cup 2025 marks the 12th edition of the men's hockey tournament, it is the first time the event will be hosted in Bihar at the Rajgir Sports Complex, which has facilities to stage international tournaments. The eight national teams participating are India, China, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, South Korea, Oman and Bangladesh. South Korea has lifted the trophy a record five times while India and Pakistan have each won it three times. The tournament carries added significance, as the champion team will automatically qualify for the Hockey World Cup. "It is a matter of pride for the people of the state that the tournament is being held here. This will not only establish the capacity of the state to host international tournaments, but also strengthen the global image of Bihar in the fields of tourism, sports and culture," Nitish said. He also highlighted the modern training infrastructure and amenities at the Rajgir Sports Complex. Former goalkeeper of Indian hockey team, P R Sreejesh, praised the keen interest of Bihar's people in hockey and observed that the state had been making notable progress under Nitish's leadership in sports as well. Dr. Vece Paes, an Olympic bronze medallist and pioneering sports medicine expert, was laid to rest on Sunday. Among the mourners at his funeral procession were former India cricket captain Sourav Ganguly and Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey. In a poignant moment, young players lined up on either side of the road and raised their sticks to pay their last respects as his hearse made its way to the Maidan tent. Officials from Hockey Bengal, the oldest association for the sport in the country, were also present. His son Leander Paes was inconsolable, with Ganguly and others comforting the tennis legend by placing their arms around him and offering words of support in his hour of grief. The mass was held at St Thomas' Church, Middleton Row. Among those present were former India cricketer Arun Lal and Trinamool Congress leader Derek O'Brien, who joined the bereaved family, friends, and members of the sporting fraternity in bidding farewell to the player who was part of the Indian team that won the bronze medal at the 1972 Olympics. The funeral services were followed by the interment at the Lower Circular Road Cemetery on AJC Bose Road. At the graveside, flowers were laid and candles lit, creating an atmosphere filled with emotion. His final journey began with a stop at the Hockey Bengal tent, where Tirkey was present to pay his last tributes. 'As far as I am concerned, personally I saw him from close quarters during the Athens Olympics in 2004," he recalled. Tirkey praised Paes' contribution to Indian sport and his pioneering role in bringing scientific methods into player management."Today we are talking about sports science, and how players can advance in sports through this.
