Microsoft Teases Multiple Gaming Devices And Next-Gen Xbox As It Doubles Down On Windows
What is an Xbox? The answer to that has never been more confusing, but a new promo video from Microsoft teasing the future of its next-gen gaming hardware lineup gives an important clue: Windows. The company said it wants the OS to be the number one platform for gaming as it doubles down on a new multiplatform strategy that supports a variety of devices rather than being locked to a single console or storefront.
'I am thrilled to share we've established a strategic multi-year partnership with AMD to co-engineer silicon across a portfolio of devices including our next-generation Xbox consoles, in your living room and in your hands,' Xbox president Sarah Bond said in a new video touting the partnership. 'Together with AMD we're advancing the state of art in gaming silicon to deliver the next generation of graphics innovation to unlock a deeper level of visual quality and immersive gameplay and player experiences enhanced with the power of AI, all while maintaining compatibility with your existing library of Xbox games.'
The announcement comes after Microsoft recently revealed the Xbox Ally handhelds, variants of Asus' next iteration of portable PC gaming devices that run a special version of Windows optimized to recreate the Xbox UI experience on the go. It's part of a 'Play Anywhere' promise that includes PC, existing Series X/S consoles, Game Pass on TVs, cloud gaming, and first-party exclusives ported to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. It all sounds like a promising pivot away from the company's shrinking console business, but it also raises lots of questions about what the future of Xbox will actually look like.
A new generation of Xbox consoles is coming, but will they be traditional consoles or mini-PC devices running an evolving version of Windows? Bond stresses compatibility with existing players' current libraries of Xbox games, but most Xbox games haven't been ported to PC and would need specialty solutions to maintain access at the hardware level rather than just making them playable with cloud gaming like Sony does with the PS3 generation. Will it even have a disc drive? Increasingly, the vibe appears to be no.
Bond also emphasizes that the future of Xbox isn't tied to a single store or device, once again opening the door to new hardware potentially supporting things like Steam, which has traditionally been a competitor to Windows gaming. Then there's the bit about working to 'ensure that Windows is the number one platform for gaming.' Unless that's simply a nod to the fact that most PCs people play games on also run Windows, it sounds like a hint that the foundation of Xbox's future will be Microsoft's current cash cow OS with an Xbox layer overtop, rather than a bespoke platform built from the ground up for gaming as Xbox has previously been. The Verge's Tom Warren suggested as much in his breakdown of the Xbox Ally last week.
'Everything, everywhere, whenever you want' is a compelling marketing pitch that could easily become bedeviled by the details. As it stands, no single company controls as many pieces of the puzzle as Microsoft—software, hardware, and a massive publishing apparatus—but that doesn't mean they will magically all start fitting together in a way that makes sense or doesn't require tons of extra investment. And the other truth about Xbox at the moment is it seems burdened more than ever by they need to justify its P&L to the larger company, which is otherwise all but obsessed with cloud computing and AI.

Why Advanced Micro Devices Rallied Today
AMD got a price target bump from a Wall Street analyst today. The move comes on the heels of last week's big artificial intelligence (AI) GPU introduction event for the new MI350 accelerators and upcoming Helios racks. The analyst also sees green shoots in the client business. 10 stocks we like better than Advanced Micro Devices › Shares of artificial intelligence (AI) chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) rallied 9.8% on Monday, as of 12:43 p.m. ET AMD made some big product announcements last week, especially around AI. Today, a Wall Street analyst wrote his positive conclusion on the event, and revealed some positive industry data in the PC space, too. Last week's big event centered on AMD's new Instinct MI350 accelerators, and upcoming MI400 "Helios" racks, which will be available next year. But one sell-side analyst also sees some optimistic signs in AMD's client business, which led to a price target bump today. On Monday, Piper Sandler semiconductor analyst Harsh Kumar noted he is seeing some "pull-ins" in the client space, which used to be AMD's largest, but is now its second largest after data centers. The PC has been mired in somewhat of a downturn for a few years now, but a combination of aging pandemic-era PCs, new AI PC capabilities, pull-ins ahead of potential further tariffs, and the coming phaseout of the Windows 10 operating system may be spurring a nice refresh cycle. In addition, some investors were worried about the sequential decrease in AMD's data center and GPU revenue last quarter, where AMD hopes to compete more effectively against Nvidia. However, in the note today, Kumar also noted he sees a "snap-back" in that area, in the second half of the year, based on the new Instinct MI350 chips, which will be available in the second half of 2025, and "Helios" rack-scale systems, which will become available in the latter part of 2025. As a result, Kumar raised his price target on AMD to $140, up from $125. There are a lot of questions surrounding AMD at this moment, namely whether there is a place for its Instinct AI accelerators in the AI world where Nvidia currently dominates, and large cloud companies are all now building more custom AI silicon themselves. However, it appears as though last week's product even was encouraging on that front, and that AMD's AI design progress and acquisitions are beginning to garner enthusiasm among the analyst community. PlayStation and Xbox are starting to tease their next-gen consoles
If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, BGR may receive an affiliate commission. You've probably already heard that the Nintendo Switch 2 is the fastest-selling game console in history with over 3.5 million sold after four days on the market. I am going to make an educated guess that PlayStation and Xbox saw Nintendo's announcement, because both companies are suddenly rather chatty about their next consoles. Last week, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino was asked about PlayStation's hardware plans (via VGC). He didn't share any details, but did say that 'the future of the platform is top of mind.' He added that the company is 'committed to exploring a new and enhanced way for players to engage with our content and services.' Documents published in 2022 as part of an investigation into Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard claimed that a new generation of consoles wasn't expected until fall 2028 at the earliest. That would put the PlayStation 6 over three years away. Considering how quiet Sony has been about the PS6 (until now), I'm willing to bet that's still the plan. That said, with Nintendo likely to dominate the conversation from now through the holiday season, it's possible those plans could change. Not to be left out, Xbox joined in on the fun with its own announcement. As revealed by Xbox president Sarah Bond on Tuesday, Xbox has entered into strategic partnership with AMD to co-engineer chips that will power a range of upcoming devices, including the next-generation Xbox consoles. Xbox has been more direct than PlayStation when it comes to its successor(s) to the Xbox Series X/S, but this is the company's biggest push to date. 'The collaboration aims to uplevel the player experience by delivering advanced graphics with enhanced visual quality, more immersive gameplay using the power of AI, and compatibility with player's existing Xbox games library,' Xbox told us on Tuesday. 'Together, Xbox and AMD hope to enable play across devices in entirely new ways, delivering an Xbox experience designed for players – without being confined to a single store or tied to one device.' While initial reports suggested the next generation wouldn't begin until 2028, the latest rumors have pointed to fall 2026 as a potential release window for the next Xbox. What form that future console will take is a mystery, but as Brad Sams pointed out on X, Microsoft announced 'Project Scarlett' (aka Xbox Series X) in June 2019. The Xbox Series X would then launch in fall 2020. If it follows a similar timeline, we could see a new console next fall.
