Laos tourism hotspot Luang Prabang steps up preparations for Green Destination certification

VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/ANN): Luang Prabang, a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1995, is stepping up efforts to secure the prestigious Tourism Destination Award from the Green Destination Organisation by finalising key documentation and ensuring compliance with evaluation criteria.
On May 15, a consultation meeting was held at the provincial Department of Information, Culture and Tourism, bringing together key stakeholders, including Deputy Director General of the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration of Thailand, Dr Chuwit Mitrchob; Head of the Luang Prabang provincial Department of Information, Culture and Tourism, Soudaphone Khomthavong; and representatives from various departments in Luang Prabang city and province.
Soudaphone highlighted Luang Prabang's recent recognition as one of the 100 best tourism destinations in the world, announced at ITB Berlin 2025, the world's leading travel trade show.
She noted that this accolade reflects the collaborative efforts of local authorities and tourism stakeholders to improve the quality of tourism in line with the province's development vision.
'Our aim is that by 2029, Luang Prabang will become a quality, modern, and regionally and internationally connected tourism destination,' she said.
The meeting addressed areas highlighted by evaluators from the Green Destination Organisation, particularly regarding the criteria, conditions and indicators required for certification as a sustainable tourist destination.
Soudaphone called on all participants to provide in-depth comments and data to enhance the submission and ensure Luang Prabang's success in achieving full certification.
Dr Chuwit also spoke at the meeting, clarifying specific points in the evaluation form and encouraging participants to align their feedback with the requirements outlined by the Green Destination Organisation.
He stressed the importance of providing accurate and coordinated input to meet the necessary standards.
Luang Prabang continues to attract a high number of visitors. According to the provincial Department of Information, Culture and Tourism, more than 2.3 million Lao and foreign tourists visited the province in 2024, generating over US$1.2 billion in revenue.
Among the province's renowned attractions are the Kuangsi waterfall, Mount Phousi, Xieng Thong temple, the Royal Palace Museum, and the night market.
Visitors also enjoy sampling traditional Lao foods such as sticky rice, laap (minced meat salad), and jaew bong (chilli paste). Favourite souvenirs include handwoven textiles, handmade crafts, and local snacks, widely available in markets such as Talad Phosy.
By securing Green Destination certification, Luang Prabang hopes to further elevate its profile as a culturally rich tourist destination, in line with its long-term development goals. - Vientiane Times/ANN

Inflation dropped to 8.3 per cent in May, marking the first single-digit rate since May 2022. This reflects a steady decline over 11 consecutive months since June last year, easing the price hikes that had affected the country for years. Improved revenue collection also supported fiscal operations, with government earnings reaching 93 percent of the first half-year target, amounting to 31,773 billion kip (US$1.476 billion). However, expenditure reached only 56.26 per cent, or 21,682 billion kip, of the planned budget. 'The government will strive to meet or exceed its revenue targets,' the government spokesperson Sonexay Sitphaxay told local media on Friday (May 30) following the two-day cabinet meeting for May. Exports (excluding electricity) rose 16.2 per cent from the previous month to over US$662 million (14,284 billion kip), resulting in a trade surplus of over US$14 million (302 billion kip). Increased exports have strengthened foreign reserves, now sufficient to cover at least five months of imports. 'Debt servicing for both domestic and external obligations is proceeding as planned,' added Sonexay, who also serves as Minister to the Prime Minister's Office. Chaired by Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, the monthly cabinet meeting reviewed implementation of the socio-economic development plan and expected performance for the first half of 2025 and preparations for the second half. The government has set a growth target of 4.8 per cent this year, up from 4.6 per cent in 2024. The cabinet noted that efforts to ramp up domestic production and reduce imports are gaining momentum, as Laos is becoming largely self-sufficient in producing staple foods to meet domestic consumption needs. Meanwhile, tourism continues to rebound, thanks to improved transport networks and promotional campaigns under the Visit Laos Year 2024 initiative. Foreign tourist arrivals rose by 21 per cent year-on-year to 4.12 million, generating US$1.13 billion in revenue. The cabinet also discussed measures to further develop transport infrastructure. Key projects include the nearly completed bridge across the Mekong River linking Lao Xayaboury and Bokeo provinces, and the Fifth Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge connecting Borikhamxay province with Thailand's Bueng Kan province, set to open by year-end. These projects are expected to boost trade and regional connectivity. Efforts are underway to enhance passenger and freight transport, leveraging the Laos-China and Laos-Thailand railways and the Thanaleng Dry Port - Laos integrated logistics hub. Investment promotion remains a priority with effort being accelerated to improve the business environment. In May alone, seven new projects were approved, worth more than 9,244 billion kip and US$3 million (more than 64 billion kip). Looking ahead, the cabinet outlined key actions for the coming months, including strengthening foreign reserves, centralising foreign currency exchange, prioritising essential imports, monitoring goods price in local markets and enhancing revenue collection mechanisms. Other priorities include regulating movement of and certifying concentration of minerals, repairing disaster-hit infrastructure, expanding vocational training, and creating jobs. To support long-term growth and stability, the cabinet approved in principle seven strategic documents. These include draft strategies on state finance through 2035 and a vision for 2040, as well as draft decrees on direct borrowing, One District One Product, startup promotion, and tourism attraction management. AirAsia MOVE faces economic sabotage case for alleged overcharging in the Philippines
MANILA: The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is preparing an economic sabotage case against the online travel agent platform of aviation group AirAsia for allegedly selling plane tickets to Tacloban at 'unreasonably' high prices. In a press briefing on Monday (June 2), Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon (pic) said they were finalising the complaints against AirAsia MOVE with the target of filing the case this week. Prior to this, the government agency issued a cease and desist order against the company headquartered in Malaysia on May 26. Dizon said the case stemmed from the complaint by Leyte 4th District Rep. Richard Gomez and Ormoc Mayor Lucy Torres-Gomez, who booked Philippine Airlines (PAL) flights from Tacloban to Manila via AirAsia MOVE that cost them about P77,704 (US$1392) – or almost P40,000 each. Had they booked through the PAL website, the plane tickets would have only cost them P49,507, Dizon noted. 'I have asked them (Philippine National Police – Anti-Cybercrime Group) to take this website down today, so this AirAsia MOVE can no longer scam others. I'm sure Congressman Richard Gomez is not the only victim here,' Dizon announced in a press conference on Monday. 'I also asked the CAB (Civil Aeronautics Board) and DOTr aviation group to immediately file a criminal economic sabotage case against AirAsia MOVE because this is really economic sabotage,' Dizon added. Dizon stressed that AirAsia MOVE's one-way plane tickets are three times higher compared to the tickets sold by other airlines at around P12,000. Aside from Gomez, Dizon said he had also received a letter from the Office of the Civil Defence executive director, Undersecretary Ariel Nepomuceno, detailing similar complaints about the selling of unreasonably high-priced plane tickets to Tacloban. Dizon also said that the overcharging might have stemmed from the limited access to the 53-year-old San Juanico Bridge, whose load limit has been limited to three tonnes starting May 15, barring trucks and buses from crossing the 2.16-km. bridge. 'Clearly there is a crisis there because the movements of goods and people were affected by the partial closure of the San Juanico Bridge to heavy vehicles, such as buses and trucks. They are taking advantage of the situation,' he lamented. The DOTr chief also instructed CAB to investigate other online platforms suspected of overcharging plane tickets not only in Tacloban but also in other destinations. Bad weather and heavy rain impacts thousands of people in China's Yunnan
KUNMING, China (Bernama-Xinhua): Rain-triggered floods and geological disasters have struck Gongshan County in southwest China's Yunnan Province, affecting 4,857 people as of 9 pm Saturday, local authorities have said. According to the county flood control and drought relief headquarters, 1,342 people have been evacuated and no casualties have been reported so far. At least 27 houses have been damaged, and 16 bridges have been impacted or brought down. Road disruptions have been reported at 97 locations, 54 of which have already been resolved. Preliminary estimates put economic losses at approximately 87.54 million yuan (about US$12.18 million). Two tourist destinations in the county have been closed temporarily, stranding 638 tourists. More than 500 of those tourists were located in Bingzhongluo Township and have already begun returning home. Damage assessments and follow-up relief efforts are still underway. - Bernama-Xinhua
