Josh Hart feels he ‘failed' the Knicks in Eastern Conference finals

Yahoo2 days ago

NEW YORK — Josh Hart didn't sugarcoat it.
Typically the Knicks' do-it-all glue guy, Hart was not satisfied with how he played in the Eastern Conference finals.
'I failed the team,' Hart said after the Knicks' season-ending Game 6 loss to the Indiana Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. 'I didn't bring it the way I should have, especially in this series, and if I played better, it could've been a different situation.'

Hart scored a series-low four points on 1-of-6 shooting in Game 6, while his six rebounds matched his lowest output of any game in the postseason. His 22 minutes were his fewest in any game this season.
He said he suffered a dislocated finger in the fourth quarter of Saturday's 125-108 defeat, and afterward, he shook hands in the locker room using his non-dominant left hand.
Hart finished the series with a plus/minus of -16, meaning the Knicks were outscored by 16 points with him on the court.
'I didn't play how I normally play,' Hart said. 'There were some games I had three or four turnovers and let that cause me to get out my game and make me passive, because you know how costly turnovers are.'

Hart committed five turnovers in the Knicks' Game 4 loss before he fouled out. He finished the series with 13 turnovers.
The 30-year-old guard did deliver some late-game heroics, particularly with his rebounding, in the Knicks' wins in Games 3 and 5.
But Hart averaged 8.3 points and 3.0 assists per game — both well below his season averages — to go with 9.3 rebounds per game.
'I felt like I was playing hard, trying to find it,' Hart said.
Hart started each of his 77 appearances in the regular season, as well as the Knicks' first 14 playoff games. His +38 in the Knicks' first-round series against the Detroit Pistons was the best on the team.

But after the Knicks' starting lineup was outplayed in the first two games of the conference finals — contributing to an 0-2 series hole — Hart volunteered to come off the bench.
Seven-foot center Mitchell Robinson started the final four games in Hart's place.
'I had some good games and then some bad games,' Hart said. 'Just trying to find it. I couldn't find it. Obviously, extremely disappointed. Could've and should've played better. That's gonna sting for a while.'

NBA trade rumors: The latest on Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kevin Durant, Cooper Flagg pick

The NBA Finals aren't even here yet, but that hasn't stopped the trade rumor mill from reaching a higher gear. Judging from what is being said around the league, multiple All-Stars could find themselves joining new teams this offseason. Here are all the latest rumors, whispers and inklings going around the NBA right now, starting with the former MVP and his several suitors. Who's going after Giannis Antetokounmpo? It's no secret the Milwaukee Bucks have good reason to trade Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason. After years of contending and the first championship in 50 years, the team's supporting cast behind Antetokounmpo has become a significant concern, from Damian Lillard's torn Achilles to Kyle Kuzma's existence. Advertisement So any team in need of an MVP-level, defensively dominant power forward is going to be on the phone, even if the price is likely to start with a young player or two and end with every first-round pick that isn't nailed down. Antetokounmpo himself is going into the offseason "open-minded" about a possible new home, per ESPN's Shams Charania. One of those teams is the Toronto Raptors, as the Toronto Star's Doug Smith reports there is mutual interest in a deal there. That's couched with the odds of a deal being "long," but Toronto is looking for a new way forward after the slow break-up of their 2019 championship team, which beat Antetokounmpo and the Bucks in the Eastern Conference finals. Giannis Antetkounmpo could be a popular man on the NBA trade market. (Photo by) (John Fisher via Getty Images) Another possibility is the Houston Rockets, whom The Athletic's Kelly Iko reports are targeting Antetokounmpo. However, the team has reportedly experienced recent uncertainty over whether the Bucks will actually part with their star, to say nothing of the price he is likely to command. Advertisement The Brooklyn Nets could also get involved, per the New York Post, and then there's the haunting idea of an Antetokounmpo-Stephen Curry team-up. We don't know how seriously the Golden State Warriors are there, but you can't ignore one of their players talking about the possibility on television. Suns reportedly lowering asking price for Kevin Durant Kevin Durant's Phoenix Suns were an expensive disaster this season, and all parties are reportedly ready to call it a day. We've known this for months. Iko also reported the Suns have been "aggressive" in moving the 36-year-old, with the Rockets in communication there and Phoenix gradually lowering its asking price. Few teams would be a better fit for Durant than Houston, which features a core of young players, a proven coach in Ime Udoka and one of the best defenses in basketball last season. Advertisement In addition to the Rockets, Charania recently reported the New York Knicks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs were all interested in Durant when he was being dangled at the trade deadline, and he expects them to be similarly interested this offseason. Stein also mentioned Minnesota to have "significant interest" in teaming Durant up with Anthony Edwards. Nothing on the Mavericks moving the Cooper Flagg pick yet The Dallas Mavericks got the most unearned fortune of the offseason by winning the NBA Draft Lottery, but the question remains if they will A) stick with the pick and draft generational prospect Cooper Flagg or B) trade the pick for what would be one of the biggest hauls in the offseason. Advertisement Right now, there has been very little indication the team is considering Option B. Veteran reporter Marc Stein reported weeks ago there's "no chance" Dallas moves off the Flagg pick and head coach Jason Kidd was talking Tuesday about focusing on Flagg, though with the caveat "we all understand that things change." Flagg represents a significant fork in the road, as the Mavericks quite loudly committed to an older core of Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving when they traded away Luka Dončić at only 25 years old. Expecting Flagg to be instantly ready as a member of a championship Big 3 would be a heck of a bet, but this front office has shown itself to be nothing if not bold. Is the Cavaliers' Core 4 really a Core 2? The Cleveland Cavaliers won 64 games this season and looked like an emerging power in the East, right up until the Indiana Pacers ripped their hearts out. That begs the question: is this a team that should be just running it back? Advertisement The answer appears to be "Yes, unless they get a particularly good offer on a couple guys." Chris Fedor said on the "Wine and Gold Talk" podcast that while the Cavaliers consider stars Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley to be "untouchables," he has gotten the sense that the team could consider deals for Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland. Detroit Pistons looking into Naz Reid, Myles Turner The Detroit Pistons took a nice leap this season and want to take the next step with a big man who can help space the floor. Per Stein, they have an eye on both the Timberwolves' Naz Reid and the Pacers' Myles Turner. Advertisement Turner is a pending free agent and could be available, but he looked pretty happy after the Pacers' Eastern Conference title and seems a decent bet to re-sign with Indiana, which certainly has cap space for him. Reid, meanwhile, has a $15 million player option for next season that he is almost certain to opt out of. Minnesota had one of the highest payrolls in the NBA last offseason, so this would likely be the center to chase.

How Jordan Ott's Suns deal shifts the Knicks coaching search toward Johnnie Bryant

How Jordan Ott's Suns deal shifts the Knicks coaching search toward Johnnie Bryant Show Caption Hide Caption Six names to replace Tom Thibodeau for the Knicks new head coach Who should replace Tom Thibodeau now that the Knicks have decided to move away from their head coach? The For The Hoops crew picks six names here. The Phoenix Suns made a coaching hire, and former Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Jordan Ott will lead their franchise. This matters to the Knicks, too. Ott was one of 15 candidates to earn consideration for the gig, per ESPN's Shams Charania. Earlier this week, Charania reported that Ott was one of two finalists for the position. The other finalist was Johnnie Bryant, who also worked on Cleveland's staff as an associate head coach last season. Shortly after Charania reported that Ott and Bryant were finalists for the Phoenix job, NBA fans were shocked to learn that the New York Knicks fired Tom Thibodeau. Perhaps one reason why New York made the move when they did is because they wanted to make their pitch to Bryant, too. More: 7 Knicks coach options after Tom Thibodeau's firing (Michael Malone!) As noted by SNY's Ian Begley, while the two events were probably not connected, it's "easy" to connect the dots (via SNY): "If you connect the dots, it's easy to wonder if the Knicks timed the firing of Thibodeau in a way that would allow them to hire Bryant. In talking to people in touch with the team on Tuesday, I don't think the two events were tied together." Either way, though, Bryant and former Denver Nuggets head coach Mike Malone are currently the two heavy favorites to replace Thibodeau. Some local reporters, however, already casting doubt on the legitimacy of Malone's actual odds. There are plenty of other candidates, like Jay Wright, we also shouldn't consider as likely. More: 5 coaches who won't take the Knicks job (so stop asking!) One similarity between the two candidates is that both coaches have previously served as assistant coaches for the Knicks. It is worth noting that Bryant worked there far more recently and has the "approval" of the front office (via The Athletic): "Bryant has the stamp of approval from the current front office. When he first joined the Knicks five years ago, it was executive vice president William Wesley who pushed for Bryant's hire." Bryant was on staff from 2020 until 2024, eventually serving as associate head coach, before he was later hired by the Cavaliers. Before the Suns hired Ott, per DraftKings, oddsmakers had Bryant as the second-most likely candidate (+400) to become the next head coach in New York. After the hire in Phoenix, however, the line shifted (+300) to make it even more like for Bryant. That marks an improved implied probability from 20.0 percent to 25.0 percent. NBA insider Marc Stein also noted that Bryant is a "likely candidate" for the vacancy, and it makes all the sense in the world. Bryant still has strong connections to players New York's roster from when he was on their staff, which we saw whenever the team played against the Cavaliers. He is also represented by CAA, which has long-standing ties to the Knicks and front office executive Leon Rose. Here is a reminder about that unique bond (via Yahoo Sports): "From the front office to the floor, the Knicks' CAA ties now run throughout Madison Square Garden. Tom Thibodeau? CAA client. OG Anunoby, whom the Knicks acquired and signed to a max deal? CAA. Jalen Brunson, whom the Knicks recruited and persuaded to sign a below-market deal? CAA. Even Rose's son, Sam, is a CAA agent who reps Brunson. And Towns? You guessed it: CAA. The family ties go further: Brunson's father, Rick, was Rose's very first NBA client as a scrappy young agent out of New Jersey. And now Rick Brunson is one of Thibodeau's top assistant coaches on the Knicks' sidelines." Now that Ott is headed to the Suns, don't be surprised if there is more and more smoke surrounding the rumors about Bryant going back to New York. For what it is worth: Bryant has a particularly strong connection to Cleveland's Donovan Mitchell, who was nearly traded to the Knicks in 2022. It is too early to speculate, but should the Knicks decide to hire Bryant, rumors about a reunion with Mitchell in the city where the NBA star grew up are going to get louder as well.
