England's Bashir out of remainder of India series
But he returned to dismiss Mohammed Siraj after tea on Monday's final day when India's last man played a defensive shot only for the ball to trickle back onto his leg stump as England won a thrilling encounter by 22 runs.
Victory left England 2-1 up in this five-match series but they are now set to call-up a new specialist spinner for the fourth Test at Old Trafford starting on July 23, with the likes of Liam Dawson and Jack Leach vying to take Bashir's place.
"England spinner Shoaib Bashir has sustained a fracture to his left finger and has been ruled out of the remainder of the Rothesay Test series against India," said an England and Wales Cricket Board statement. "He is scheduled to undergo surgery later this week.

Root has no interest in Tendulkar run-record hype
Root leapfrogged three greats of the game during his magnificent 150 in the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford on Friday, overtaking Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis before going past former Australia captain Ricky Ponting. Now only Tendulkar, with a mammoth 15,921 Test runs, is ahead of Root, although Ponting is among those who believe the 34-year-old former England captain has time on his side to close the 2,512-run gap to the India great. But Root, who has compiled 21 hundreds since turning 30, is wary of the hype and wants attention turned to the fact England are pressing for a series-clinching win in Manchester at 2-1 up in the five-Test contest "It is easy to get caught up in this stuff but at the end of the day, you're playing against India in one of the biggest series there is," Root told Sky Sports. "It's not about you, it's about winning the game and getting your team in a position where you can follow through on that." Nevertheless, he added: "When you look at the names there on that list, they are all people that, as a kid, growing up, that's who I would try and be in the garden, on the street, on the driveway, at my local club. "Even just to be mentioned in the (same) sentence as these guys is a bit of a pinch-yourself moment." Root said a period of reflection during Covid, when he was still England captain, prompted changes to his game that have helped the Yorkshireman amass 5,586 runs at a high average of 56.42 since the start of 2021. "I actually went away during that period and asked can I get some footage off Sky and just look at modes of dismissal (to see) if there were any trends," he explained. "One thing that I've done within that period is actually try and look at the game slightly differently. "At the start of my career, a lot of it was based on my technique. Whereas in this second phase of things, it's been more about managing risk and thinking how can I eliminate as many modes of dismissal as possible with the highest output? © 2025 AFP

Too early to judge Gill and his young India team, says Dev
Gill, 25, took over a team in transition after the retirements of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ahead of the five-Test tour of England. The visitors, who trail the series 2-1, lost the opener before they bounced back to level the series. They then went down in a closely-fought third Test at Lord's. Ben Stokes' England are in the box seat in the fourth Test and in sight of clinching the series. "The team came close to winning (at Lord's) and then lost," said Dev, who is the president of Professional Golf Tour of India (PGTI), on the sidelines of the announcement of the second half of the national golf calender. "It's a new team and it is getting an opportunity. In the coming days, these boys will come back with tournament victories. "Any new team needs time to adjust. The new captain has to learn a lot and this series will be a learning step (for him)." Gill, a top-order batter, leads the series batting with over 600 runs including three centuries and a career-best of 269 in the second Test in Birmingham. Pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah has been India's best bowler with 14 wickets in five innings despite the collective decision that he play just three Tests to manage his workload. Bumrah, a yorker specialist who bowls with an unusual slingshot action has more than 200 Test wickets in his injury-prone career of 48 Tests. But Dev, who never missed a Test due to injury in his 16-year-old career that ended in 1994 with 434 wickets, defended Bumrah's decision to skip matches. "I think everybody is different," the 1983 World Cup-winning captain told reporters. "Times have changed, bodies are different and they are working differently. "He is one of the finest bowlers we have. His action is so awkward, and to sustain it this far, I think it's fabulous. "We never thought that someone would play so long (with this action) because he puts so much stress on his body. He is still delivering for the Indian team, hats off to him." Dev said Indian golf is ready to take a leaf out of cricket's set up in India and expand with the PGTI securing new sponsors and increased prize money for tournaments. © 2025 AFP

Lions stage stunning comeback to beat Wallabies and win series
In a rousing performance before 90,307 fans at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, the tourists responded spectacularly after slumping 23-5 down with Hugo Keenan's 79th-minute try claiming a famous win. It was a sensational reply after being stunned by three tries in eight first-half minutes from Australia's James Slipper, Jake Gordon and Tom Wright. The wounded Lions clawed back to be 23-17 behind at the break then dealt Australia a crushing blow with Keenan's match-winning heroics. It is the first time since 1997 that the Lions have wrapped up a Test series with a game to spare after winning in Brisbane 27-19, and not since 1966 have they managed the feat against Australia. They remain unbeaten after eight tour games in Australia with only the final dead rubber Test in Sydney next weekend standing between them and a whitewash. Coach Andy Farrell touted the showdown as the biggest of his players' lives and they rose to the occasion, but it was a titanic battle against a vastly improved Australia. The hosts beefed up with marauding powerhouse forwards Will Skelton, Rob Valetini and Dave Porecki all back from injury and their presence was huge -- helping combat the brutality that helped the Lions win in Brisbane. In Australia's past two series against the Lions, in 2001 and 2013, the Wallabies lost the first Test then levelled both in Melbourne. And they started well when Tom Lynagh nailed a penalty on three minutes to settle their nerves, then made it 6-0 soon after when he slotted another from 40 metres. The Lions, though, grew in confidence and began laying siege to the Wallabies line, with Ireland hooker Dan Sheehan diving over two tackles to dot down and open their account. Undeterred, the hosts kept coming and veteran prop Slipper powered over for a converted try with the Lions problems compounded with Tommy Freeman sent to the sin bin after repeated infringements at the breakdown. It proved costly, with the Wallabies grabbing two tries in his absence, the first to scrum-half Gordon who sniped through a gap then fullback Wright after a sizzling run from Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii. With Freeman back on the field, the Lions regrouped and clawed back with two tries of their own in quick succession. England flanker Tom Curry snared the first after being fed by Jamison Gibson-Park on the wing, with centre Huw Jones forcing his way over for the second. In a setback, Valetini failed to return for the second-half and Skelton went off soon after the restart. Tate McDermott converted a penalty to increase the hosts' buffer but the loss of their two big forwards was felt and the Lions began gaining ascendancy. Ireland lock Tadhg Beirne crossed in the corner and with Finn Russell adding the extras, the Lions were only two points adrift with 20 minutes to play. In a frantic finish, the Lions kept pressing with Keenan scrambling over at the death to send the visiting fans into raptures. © 2025 AFP
