Gold Coast Titans junior Joseph Pouniu returns to NRL club after 'catastrophic' spinal injuries - and now he wants to play wheelchair footy

Paralysed teenager Joseph Pouniu has returned to the Gold Coast Titans after suffering 'catastrophic' spinal injuries when representing the NRL club during a trial match in 2023. Pouniu, 19, has started a role with the football department as a video analyst - and wants to eventually play wheelchair rugby league. In February of 2023, his life was turned upside down aged 16 after crashing into a goal post mid-match. The youngster - considered an elite talent destined to play first grade - was rushed to Brisbane for emergency surgery to stabilise his neck and reattach the C4 and C5 discs to his spinal cord. The Titans have stood by Pouniu since the incident, raising more than $1.2million to assist the teenager going forward in his life. 'Before the injury, this is where I wanted to be and it's good to be a part of it again,' he told the Titans in an interview via the club's website. 'I've made so much progress. To be able to move my arms and do daily activities has been massive. 'Adjusting to this new lifestyle has been a big journey, but I've got to keep pushing forward. His life was turned upside down after crashing into a goal post mid-match leaving him a quadriplegic (pictured) '(Titans video analyst Chris Kulen) has been showing me the ropes. It's pretty interesting. 'It's given me an appreciation of what happens behind the scenes. It's pretty cool.' Titans chairman Dennis Watt labelled Pouniu an 'outstanding young man' and that the club are delighted he has come on board as an analyst. Diagnosed a quadriplegic, Pouniu is now inspired to play wheelchair rugby league. 'I've been itching to get back on,' he told News Corp.

Revealed: NRL agents learn their fate after alleged fight outside a PUB during 2024 Australian Schoolboys carnival

Two prominent NRL agents have been issued huge fines and massive suspensions following an alleged fight outside a NSW pub last year. NRL officials confirmed on Thursday they plan to ban Nash Dawson for nine months and Gavin Orr six months respectively over the alleged incident. The duo will also be fined $15,000 and $10,000, with the pair given five business days to respond to the breach notices. Combined, Dawson and Orr represent some of the game's best talent. Dawson manages the affairs of many NRL stars, namely Broncos stars Ezra Mam and Reece Walsh, Dolphins fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Roosters young gun Robert Toia. Orr is the owner and director of sport at Pacific Sport Management, whose talent list includes Eels pivot Dylan Brown, Broncos winger Selwyn Cobbo, Melbourne Storm halfback Jahrome Hughes and Dragons veteran Valentine Holmes. 'The notices allege that both agents have breached the NRL Accredited Agent Scheme Rules and the Accredited Agents' Code of Conduct following a physical altercation at the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships in 2024,' the NRL said in a statement. 'It is also alleged the agents failed to co-operate with the NRL integrity unit. 'Under the Accredited Agents' Code of Conduct, Accredited Agents are required to operate with high personal and professional standards.' The altercation is believed to have happened outside of a pub, while the pair were in Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of NSW last year during the Australian Secondary Schools Rugby League Championships. Realistically, the impact on either of the pair's clients is likely to be minimal, given Dawson and Orr's colleagues can handle matters in their absence. It comes after fellow agents Mario Tartak and Matthew Desira were also recently handed bans from the NRL for breaches of the accredited agent scheme. Tartak - who is the director of Crown Sports Management - has Damien Cook and Josh Addo-Carr on his books. He has been proposed a 12-month suspension and $25,000 fine while Desira is facing a six-month suspension and $10,000 fine. Desira is the director of Aria Management Group, with Jayden Campbell, Greg Marzhew and Bronson Xerri key clients.
