Hibs 1 Midtjylland 2 (agg 2-3 AET): Spectacular Brumado strike late in extra time ends Hibees' Europa League hopes
MIDTJYLLAND sub Junior Brumado spectacularly put Hibs out of the Europa League with a gut-wrenching last gasp extra time winner. Spot-kicks had looked certain until the Brazilian pounced with an overhead kick. 5 Stunning bicycle kick by Brumado Credit: Kenny Ramsay 5 Rocky had levelled things up for the hosts Credit: Getty 5 Visitors celebrate late winner Credit: Alamy Dario Osario had put the Danes ahead in the first half of extra time but Rocky Bushiri levelled before the visitors' stunning late joy moment. Now it's a Conference League qualifier for Hibs against Partizan Belgrade in Serbia next week. The Danes were smarting after the first leg, stunned by the quality and aggression of Hibs - but, then, they'd also clearly underestimated them. This time, though, there was never a chance of that. They were out to prove a point. Hibs, however, started well - Chris Cadden's superb ball down the line for a sprinting clear Martin Boyle seeing the winger fire in a great cross for no takers. The atmosphere was electric and a few minutes later Boyle had a goal-bound shot from point-blank range brilliantly blocked by Lee Han-beom. Then Warren O'Hora headed straight at Jonas Lossl from a great Jordan Obita cross. Midtjylland, though, started to play their way into this tie and dictate things. Most read in Europa League Hibs keeper Jordan Smith saved well from an Osorio shot from distance. He'd later be beaten by the same player. Legendary Mixu Paatelainen lifts lid on Jim McLean's brutal blast, infamous Walter Smith bust-up and his Hibs job regrets The hosts came right back with a Jamie McGrath 25-yarder which flew narrowly over. Strong-man striker Kieron Bowie was a problem for the Midtjylland defence but so was first leg goal-scorer and livewire winger Aral Simsir at the other end. Hibs fans erupted in the 16th minute believing Bowie had blasted them into the lead from a superb Obita cross. But a VAR check would rule it out for offside. It would be the last moment of joy for the Hibees in a half promptly controlled by the Danes. Osorio blasted over when he should've scored then Han-beom headed straight at Smith just six yards out. Josh Mulligan tried his luck from 25-yards but his shot was wildly over. Midtjylland regained control - and it needed the best defending of O'Hora to deny Simsir. Smith made decent stops in quick succession from Oliver Sorensen and then from Franculino Dju as Hibs fans got anxious. But it was goal-less at the break with everything still to play for. Hibs had competed well but Midtjylland were the better footballing side. Sharper, slicker. Eight minutes into the second half it looked like they'd scored - a straightforward Han-beom ball down the middle finding a totally unmarked Dju who controlled, turned and clinically finished inside the box. 5 Hibs striker Martin Boyle dejected Credit: PA 5 Rocky Bushiri levels for Hibs Credit: PA But this time VAR came to the rescue of Hibs with the striker ruled offside. Cadden forced a decent save from Lossl but it had become more about defending for Hibs. Dju was sent clean through by Osorio after 66 minutes but after dragging his heels tried to go round Smith before O'Hora got back to save the day. Hibs were hanging on going into the closing stages of regular time - and Smith saved well from a deflected Osorio shot, then a Mads Bech Sorensen header. Attacker Elie Youan came off the bench for his first appearance since March. Hibs thought they'd sensationally nicked it two minutes into added time - Boyle storming through to square for Nicky Cadden to tap in, but the Hibs captain was ruled offside by VAR. But it would be extra time and Midtjylland broke the dead-lock after four minutes with a fabulous left-foot blast from Osorio. Bushiri headed straight at Lossl but he'd make amends in added time of first half extra time by ramming home a superb Youan cut-back for 1-1 and 2-2 on aggregate. Hibs - roared on by their fans - came alive again. Frustrating start for Woad at Women's Open
Lottie Woad endured a frustrating start to the AIG Women's Open as Japan's Eri Okayama and Rio Takeda topped the first-round leaderboard at a sunny Royal Porthcawl on Thursday. An astonishing July, which culminated in Woad winning the Scottish Open in her first event as a professional, had made the 21-year-old favourite for the year's final major. But the former Florida State University player found the going tough on the south Wales coast as she ground out a level-par round of 72 thanks to a birdie at the last. Okayama's five-under 67 gave her the lead before she was joined by Takeda after she birdied the 18th. Japanese players dominated the opening day with Miyu Yamashita at four-under ahead of a large group on three-under that included Chevron Championship winner Mao Saigo, Shiho Kuwaki and Chisato Iwai. Reigning champion Lydia Ko of New Zealand and world number one Nelly Korda, like Woad, failed to take advantage of relatively calm conditions. Ko finished on one over, while American Korda was two-under par. World number 139 Okayama bogeyed her opening hole but birdied five of the next eight and was rock solid on the way back with another birdie at the 17th moving her ahead. Ireland's Leona Maguire and Lauren Walsh ended the day with level-par 72 but an error strewn back nine saw Anna Foster shoot a four-over-round of 76. Reuters

Ole Gunnar Solskjær's Besiktas next up for St Pat's on Conference journey
Uefa Conference League, second round, second leg: Nomme Kalju 2 (Patrikejevs 43', Mannilann 49') St Patrick's Athletic 2 (Redmond 90+1', Mulraney 93') (AET St Patrick's Athletic win 3-2 on aggregate). Ole Gunnar Solskjær's Besiktas visit St Patrick's Athletic in next Thursday's Conference League third round after Stephen Kenny's side escaped a late scare in Estonia to progress. Nõmme Kalju looked susceptible to being torpedoed when the Saints built on a slender first-leg by bossing early possession but they conceded either side of the break to stare elimination in the face. Captain Joe Redmond rescued their plight by pouncing in stoppage time to force extra-time before the returning Jake Mulraney embarrassed home goalkeeper Maksim Pavlov by lobbing him scored early to complete a 3-2 aggregate victory. Saints also recovered from the loss of star striker Mason Melia to injury at half-time and came through a biblical downpour to repeat last year's feat of reaching the third round. Replicating their march to the playoff round – where they lost to another Turkish outfit İstanbul Başakşehir - hinges on seeing off a Turkish outfit nowadays led by former Manchester United boss Solskjær. His side drop into Uefa's third competition by losing heavily over two legs against Shakhtar Donetsk. Trailing 4-2 from their Europa League home leg, Besiktas conceded another two without reply in the return, played at the Ukrainians' nominated venue of Kraków. They will be gracing Tallaght in the first leg due to Pat's' home ground of Richmond Park being unsuitable for this stage of the competition. Pat's might have been saying goodbye to Europe only for a lifeline at the death. While Kenny highlighted six clean sheets on the bounce as evidence of solidity, they were caught napping for two goals. Tallinn's sparsely populated Lilleküla Stadium were gifted an advantage they seldom hinted at in the first two hours of the tie. Beforehand, Mulraney fired straight at Pavlov after cutting in while Melia twice went with headers, the second of which left him nursing a rib injury. He made way for Aiden Keena but only after midfielder Barry Baggley was late tracking the run of Ivan Patrikejevs two minutes before the break. He probably expected his goalkeeper Joseph Anang to keep out the low shot which snuck inside the near post to level up the tie. Straight after the restart, the fixture swung the way of the Estonians after Mattias Männilaan was allowed to rise high eight yards out and thump his header beyond the Ghanaian custodian. Keena and Simon Power both fired wide as the clock ticked down but an enterprising run and shot by defender Tom Grivosti earned a corner on the cusp of stoppage time. Mulraney's dribble from the set-piece led to a free and took, from which the hapless goalkeeper could only parry. Redmond was on hand to scoop the rebound in. It would be Mulraney's night. Only three minutes into extra-time he dropped his shoulder on the right and floated a cross that morphed into a shot which beat the stranded stopper.
