One killed and seven more hurt as box truck leading chase crashes, SC cops say
One person was killed and seven others were hospitalized Saturday after a U-Haul truck that was trying to escape from law enforcement crashed, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Four vehicles and two pedestrians were involved in the chain-reaction collision that happened at about 4:55 p.m. in Charleston County, said Lance Cpl. Brittany Glover.
The initial collision involved a 2014 U-Haul box truck whose driver was trying to get away from members of the North Charleston Police Department, according to Glover. Information about why the U-Haul was being chased was not available.
The U-Haul was driving north in a southbound lane on Meeting Street as it led the pursuit, Glover said. Near the intersection with Reid Street in downtown Charleston the U-Haul hit two pedestrians then veered into a northbound lane where it crashed into a 2022 Mercedes-Benz sedan, according to Glover.
The Mercedes-Benz then collided with a Honda motorcycle that then crashed into a 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe, Glover said.
There were two riders on the motorcycle, and one of them died at the scene, according to Glover.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office has not publicly identified the motorcycle rider who died.
The other motorcycle rider, along with one of the two people in the U-Haul, all three occupants in the Mercedes-Benz and both pedestrians were hurt and taken to area hospitals, Glover said. Further information on their conditions was not available.
Glover said neither of the people in the Chevy were hurt, and no other injuries were reported.
No arrests have been reported, and the incident that led to the chase is being investigated by police, according to Glover. The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
Through April 20, at least 234 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2025, according to the state Department of Public Safety. Last year, at least 948 people died in crashes in South Carolina, DPS reported.
At least 15 people have died in Charleston County crashes in 2025, according to DPS data. There were 50 deaths in the county in 2024, DPS reported.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department held a press conference at noon Tuesday to discuss Monday night's protest and its response. APD Police Chief Lisa Davis discussed 'results from the large gatherings' at the department's headquarters. David said APD worked collaboratively with the Texas Department of Public Safety to facilitate the peaceful protest. Previous: Anti-ICE march held in solidarity with LA protests; Arrests made, DPS uses tear gas The protest began around 7 p.m. Monday at the Texas Capitol. Anti-capitalist group Party for Socialism and Liberation organized the initial march and shared its route with APD ahead of time. APD said the protest moved through the downtown Austin area, where it escalated quickly. Around 8 p.m. Monday, the marchers returned to the Capitol. They broke off into smaller groups over the next hour. David said in the press conference that, through the use of drones, APD and DPS discovered individuals graffitiing the federal building. Two individuals were arrested for spray painting the building's windows, according to Davis. Davis said tensions climbed when large rocks began being thrown towards officers. 3 officers were injured from the rocks, and another suffered a shoulder injury and was spat on in the eye by a protester, according to Davis. The Texas Department of Public Safety was also involved in the law enforcement response to the protest. APD confirmed that it deployed pepper balls toward the ground, and DPS used tear gas to disperse the crowd. City policy implemented after protests in 2020 prohibits APD officers from using tear gas. DPS released the following statement on Tuesday in response. 'The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has a duty to protect the people and property of Texas. On Monday evening, DPS personnel responded to a planned and publicized protest at the Texas State Capitol Complex. While we do not discuss operational specifics, DPS collaborates with local, state and federal law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of our citizens and state property, as well as to protect individuals exercising their constitutional rights to assembly and free speech. As with any incident response, the department adjusts its operations, including personnel and resources, as needed to address potential and emerging threats. During Monday evening's response, DPS personnel deployed tear gas and pepper ball projectiles to ensure officer safety and maintain order. DPS personnel arrested four individuals on various charges, including felony criminal mischief and resisting arrest. Texas is a law-and-order state. DPS will continue monitoring future events and their impact on public safety across the state, and we stand ready to protect the people and property of the great state of Texas,' DPS said. According to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, 'more than a dozen' protesters were arrested Monday night. APD said it plans to have 100% staffing ready this weekend in anticipation of any protests. Shocking footage captures the moment a hired gunman fires at homes amid a bitter gangland feud. Kieran Morgan, 30, was caught on camera wielding a sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun opening fire in broad daylight and in the early hours in another appalling attack. He also fired a shotgun in a busy takeaway in a third shooting committed within the space of a few weeks. Zaki Shazad, 22, was the 'organiser' of the attacks, but was operating on behalf of unknown more senior underworld figures, Minshull Street Crown Court heard. A judge said the shootings had 'all the hallmarks of a dispute between serious organised criminals'. Miraculously, no one was hurt in any of the incidents, which happened in March and April 2023. Now Morgan has been sentenced to 18 years in jail, and Shazad to 16 years in prison. The first shooting happened on March 12 on Doric Avenue in Heald Green, Stockport. Morgan, with another man, was wearing a mask and dark clothing when he approached and fired a shotgun at the house. He then threw a homemade explosive device towards the property, but it bounced off a wall before Morgan picked it up and threw it at a higher trajectory where it 'went off like a firework'. Greater Manchester Police said that forensic testing later the device contained hydrochloric acid. Morgan then fled the scene in a Mercedes. The second shooting happened in broad daylight at a house on Wilmslow Road in Heald Green on April 21, when a family including a child were packing up their car for Eid celebrations. Morgan arrived at the scene in the afternoon with a hold-all bag, containing the shotgun. Wearing a face mask, he opened fire towards the property. No-one was hurt but there was damage caused to the house. The third shooting took place at the Drip burger bar on Kingsway nine days later, on April 30. Morgan entered the restaurant, immediately firing one shot before firing another soon after. One hit a wall next to a TV, and the other hit the counter. Staff were behind the counter at the time and customers were in the front of the restaurant. Prosecutor David Farley said those inside were 'clearly and understandably terrified'. Morgan fled on a bike. Shazad was the 'organiser' of the shootings. Messages sent between the pair on Snapchat show that Morgan was to be paid £1,000 by him for the 'jobs'. Shazad, of Ranford Road, Levenshulme, was found guilty of conspiring to possess a firearm with intent to endanger life. Morgan, of Petworth Avenue, Chadderton, pleaded guilty to the same offence. Police said that the three shootings were linked after officers received intelligence. They trawled through CCTV footage which helped to identify Morgan, who was seen wearing a Canada Goose jacket. He later posted a picture of himself on social media wearing the same jacket. His face was also seen on one CCTV clip after he had removed a balaclava. Shazad was also sentenced after he was caught trying to smuggle in cannabis to a relative who was in HMP Berwyn in North Wales. He pleaded guilty to conveying a list A article into prison and possessing cannabis. Defending Morgan, Keith Harrison said the defendant has suffered from 'recurring mental health problems'. For Shazad, David Bentley said that he was involved in assisting Morgan, but that he was not the 'Mr Big'. After the hearing, Detective Inspector Lee Newburn, of GMP, said: 'Violence, particularly this kind of revenge violence, will not be tolerated on the streets of Manchester. We have seen two dangerous individuals locked up for their parts in a number of firearms discharges targeting properties where innocent people were present. 'It is miraculous that no-one was seriously injured during these firearms discharges, but they could very easily have been. One of the victims of these shootings has described to me how scared she now is to go out in public and just how shaken she is about what happened. Nobody should be made to feel like this. 'We continue to work very closely with the communities in and around Greater Manchester to ensure that we protect them from this kind of violence, and we are grateful for the intelligence that we receive from them in relation to illegal activity on a daily basis. 'We also work closely with the Greater Manchester Violence Reduction Unit (VRU), which is a multi-agency team we are part of, and we seek to prevent violence from occurring by addressing underlying issues and educating those who may be at risk of re-offending. 'We do this by providing valuable input in prevention work that our partners are carrying out on an ongoing basis, working behind the scenes to manage serious incidents before they occur. That is why we are asking, if you know anyone who is using, or possesses, an illegal firearm, we urge you to get in touch with us as, for each firearm we recover, that's potentially a life saved."

Lafayette woman claims two pit bulls mauled her dog to death
LAFAYETTE, La. () — A Lafayette woman said she has lost her beloved pet in the worst way imaginable. Connie Cordova said her two-year-old dog Mercedes was mauled to death by two of her neighbor's dogs, both pit bulls, as she watched, helpless. Cordova says she let Mercedes outside around 6 p.m. on Saturday. Cordova says she was in her bathroom getting ready to go to a restaurant with family, when suddenly she heard screams and whimpers that sounded like her dog. 'By the time I made it outside, the black one would not let Mercedes go, he just kept shaking her like a rag doll and he wouldn't stop.' Cordova reported the incident to Lafayette Police on Saturday and Animal Control on Monday. She said officers with Animal Control arrived at her neighbor's residence early Monday morning and took custody of the pit bulls. 'I went out this morning and filled out a report for vicious animals, and showed them pictures of my dog, what they did with her,' Cordova said. 'Animal Control came out this morning to issue a citation and pick the pitbulls up.' She says her entire family is heartbroken over the loss of Mercedes. She describes her as a gentle dog, who brought joy, comfort and unconditional love to everyone she came across. 'She was their best friend, she'd kiss the kids, and she'd hug you, like a human being,' Cordova said. 'I always had good times with her, she traveled with us wherever she went and now I have nobody.'
