‘We just have so much opportunity': Boston is one of the top areas for women-owned businesses
Women-owned businesses are helping to drive economic growth, employing millions of workers and generating billions of dollars. And one of the best places for women to start a business? Right here in Boston. It ranks among the top five best metro areas for women-owned businesses, making it a hub for female entrepreneurs.
'I think there's a huge network of really strong women leaders in the Boston area,' said Martha Sheridan, President and CEO of Meet Boston.
Those female leaders are everywhere. From the political landscape with the mayor, attorney general, governor, and lieutenant governor to major event planners for First Night and Sail Boston, and the tourism sector with the iconic Duck Boats.
'Bostonians and Massachusetts residents in general really respect strong women leaders,' said Sheridan. 'And I think business owners are no different. So they know that they have a place here, and there's a strong network among them where they can count on each other to, you know, bounce off ideas, get support.'
That support and compassion has helped Wendy Tatlock launch her business, Care Patrol.
Wendy left the corporate world after 20 years and now helps seniors and their families figure out their options when they can't live alone in their homes anymore.
'It's also been very rewarding personally to give back,' said Wendy Tatlock, owner of Care Patrol. 'I have helped so many families and they are so grateful every week.'
Care Patrol opened just before COVID hit, so Wendy admits it was hard to get going at first. But she's been able to lean on a whole network of small business owners virtually in the Boston area that are willing to help each other.
'I think women are so resourceful and so resilient, and I think corporate America can be so rigid and political,' said Tatlock. 'I think when women put their mind to something, they can get things done. And around here, we just have so much opportunity.'
With that opportunity also comes resources from the International Women's Forum to Meet Boston, which is also female-led.
'Women-owned businesses are incredibly important to our sector in general,' said Sheridan. 'And I think the ones that are really, really managed with strong, solid female leadership do generate a significant amount of revenue not only for themselves, but really for the entire region because their particular businesses attract people here.'
Whether it's the restaurant scene, tourism, or health care, these female leaders rely on their work ethic and a network of strong women to succeed.
'It's had its challenges, I'm not going to lie,' said Sheridan. 'Being a woman in this sector. But I can tell you that I love the fact that I can now mentor and grow other women to do what I'm doing in this, in this segment, and that it's not there's nothing more gratifying to me.'
'So when you combine the hard work with the research and believe in yourself, I think anything is possible,' said Tatlock.
A recent Wallet Hub study also found that Massachusetts is the best state for women in 2025, in part because it has one of the lowest unemployment rates for women. It also ranks as the best state to have a baby in and the best state for working moms.

‘That's prime time real estate': Bostonians react to potential skyline change of Fenway Park
Fenway Park views may never look the same. That's if a major development project is approved to build a 200-million-dollar, seven-story, 250-thousand-square-foot office space that would tower over the Green Monster, replacing the two-story parking garage. The proposed construction is a part of the 'Fenway Corners' project, which aims to redevelop and reimagine the area outside Fenway Park. So far, Bostonians seem receptive to the possible change, some say they wouldn't mind the change, while others say it'll benefit it. 'Oh wow!' Said Bostonian Colleen Kolodzie. 'That's prime time real estate, yeah.' 'It would bring more people and more businesses and shops and everything like that, so that's a great idea.' Said resident Brett Weaver. While it would mostly be office space, the plans include adding retail on parts of Lansdowne Street. 'I think it's a great idea," said Bostonian Tom Geyer. 'I think other states do it, and other ballparks do it, bring revenue to the area.' However, some people are against the potential change. Boston resident Chris Gonzalez says that it could alter the view of the Boston skyline, with the potential of the building blocking the iconic Citgo sign. 'Yeah, I don't think I really like that because then it's blocking a lot of things that people enjoy about this view and this avenue here and this street so I think it would prevent a lot of people from kind of seeing like the brightness and the wide side of the city itself.' If approved, construction of the building would take place next summer, and finish two years after that. This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available. Take a Peek Into Taylor Sheridan's Takeover of Cattlemen's Steakhouse in Fort Worth
Taylor Sheridan, the showrunner for Yellowstone and its universe of spin-offs, Landman , and Lioness , along with his partners David Glasser and Dan Schryer, finally announced that they have purchased Cattlemen's Steakhouse in the Fort Worth Stockyards. According to a press release, Marti Taylor and Larry Heppe will remain as part-owners, and the group plans to 'maintain the core essence of the menu' while preserving the experience that diners already know in place, including the cowboy decor. In a recent interview with Hurtado Barbecue owner Brandon Hurtado, Eater Dallas learned that Sheridan has already been serving steaks from cattle raised on his Weatherford-based Four Sixes Ranch at Cattlemen's Steakhouse, and that Sheridan is selling that beef to Hurtado Barbecue as well. 'We're the largest user of beef from the Four Sixes Ranch probably in the United States,' Hurtado says. 'Cattlemen's also uses beef from the Four Sixes, and it's honestly some of the best beef I've had in my life.' Rosewood Ranch owner Kenneth Braddock shared with D magazine that he has been working with Sheridan and annually sends 60 wagyu bulls to the Four Sixes to breed with its Black Angus first-calf heifers. The release also indicates that the restaurant has been undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation in recent months, which is still ongoing. The project will include the addition of new dining, bar, and event spaces, along with an outdoor patio and stage for live music, totaling over 20,000 square feet of new space. Additionally, Cattleman's will introduce Cattlemen's Club, a private members' club accessible from inside the steakhouse via a private elevator, with a limited number of memberships available for $3,000, accompanied by a one-time initiation fee of $1,000. There will also be an option for corporate memberships, which include up to four memberships, at $9,000 annually, with a one-time $1,000 initiation fee, and an additional $2,000 for each additional membership in the package. Members will have access to priority reservations at the restaurant, VIP access to live performances, exclusive spirits, a boardroom for meetings and events, and invitations to special events on- and off-site (we assume this means at the Four Sixes Ranch). No date was given for when the full renovation is expected to be complete or when memberships to Cattlemen's Club will become available. Sign up for our newsletter.
