India's soyoil imports set for record high, palm oil at five-year low
India's soyoil imports are projected to surge by 60% in 2024/25, reaching a record high due to its competitive pricing compared to palm oil. This shift is expected to decrease palm oil imports to a five-year low and impact global vegetable oil markets. Refiners are capitalizing on cheaper soyoil, even sourcing from Nepal to leverage tax benefits.
India's soyoil imports are poised to surge 60% year-on-year to a record high in 2024/25, as refiners boost purchases due to cheaper prices compared with rival palm oil, shipments of which are set to hit a five-year low, six dealers told Reuters. Higher soyoil purchases by India, the world's biggest importer of vegetable oils, will support global soyoil prices , which have risen 31% so far this year, but weigh on benchmark Malaysian palm oil futures. In the 2024/25 marketing year ending in October, soyoil imports are likely to jump to 5.5 million metric tons, from 3.44 million tons a year ago, according to estimates from dealers. Palm oil imports in the year, meanwhile, are likely to fall 13.5% from a year ago to 7.8 million metric tons, the lowest since 2019/20, dealers said. Sunflower oil imports could fall 20% to 2.8 million tons, the lowest in three years, they said. Higher soyoil imports will lift India's total edible oil imports in the year by 1% to 16.1 million tons, dealers estimated.
Palm oil traded at a premium for many months this year, which prompted buyers to replace it with soyoil, said B.V. Mehta, executive director of the Solvent Extractors' Association of India. "Soyoil was cheap and plenty in stock, so it ended up grabbing palm oil's market share," he said. Crude palm oil was commanding a premium of as high as $150 per ton over crude soyoil earlier this year due to tight supplies of the tropical oil in producer countries Malaysia and Indonesia. Indian consumers are price-sensitive and had relied on palm oil because it was cheap. But its price rally prompted even large industrial buyers to look for alternatives, said Aashish Acharya, vice president at Patanjali Foods Ltd, a leading importer of edible oils. While soyoil was initially being bought as a substitute for palm oil, it is now also replacing rapeseed oil, which has become more expensive due to a price rally in the past two months, said a Mumbai-based dealer with a global trade house. India buys palm oil mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia, while it typically imports soyoil and sunflower oil from Argentina, Brazil, Russia and Ukraine. This year, however, India is likely to buy more than 600,000 tons of soyoil from Nepal, a New Delhi-based dealer said. Soyoil shipments from Nepal are tax-free under the South Asian Free Trade Agreement, which is encouraging buyers from eastern India to source soyoil from the Himalayan country, he added.

HC upholds higher compensation for farmers who lost land for Mumbai-Delhi freight corridor
MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court dismissed an appeal filed by the central government, challenging a substantial hike in compensation for acquired lands in Palghar for the Mumbai–Delhi dedicated freight corridor. Initially, in 2018, the compensation offered in exchange for land was ₹2,362 per square meter, which was challenged by the land owners in a lower court. In 2021, the court raised the compensation to ₹6,300 per square meter, an appeal against which was dismissed by the court on Wednesday. Bombay High Court (Anshuman Poyrekar/HT PHOTO) The dispute dates back to 2018 to the acquisition of land in Saphale, Palghar, for the construction of a dedicated freight corridor of 1483 km from JNPT (Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust) in Maharashtra to Dadri in Haryana. Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Ltd. (DFCCI), a corporation established by the Ministry of Railways, was appointed to undertake the planning and development, mobilisation of financial resources and construction, maintenance and operation of dedicated freight corridors (special railway projects). For the project, DFCCI acquired the land of five farmers in the village at a fixed compensation of ₹2,362 per square meter. Dissatisfied with the offered compensation, the five land owners invoked the provisions of the Railways Amendment Act, 2008, and approached the Thane Arbitral Tribunal in 2018, seeking a rise in the compensation amount. Following this, the tribunal on January 18, 2021, passed a judgement, raising the amount to ₹6,300 per square meter. DFCCI, in turn, challenged the award in the arbitral tribunal in 2021, which was dismissed in March 2024. Following this, DFCCI moved the Bombay High Court in 2025, requesting to set aside the arbitral tribunal's March 2024 order, claiming that the court grossly erred in fixing the market value at the rate of ₹6,300 per square meter by taking into account the rates of land in neighbouring villages. Noting that the facts and legal issues were 'squarely covered' by that earlier ruling by the lower court, the division bench of chief justice Alok Aradhe and justice Sandeep Marne dismissed the appeal. The high court stated that after the 2015 amendment to the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, under which the DFCCI appealed to set aside the raised compensation, the parliament incorporated the clarification to ensure that the phrase 'fundamental policy of Indian law' is narrowly construed so as not to entail a review on merits of a dispute, unless there is fraud, corruption, or a contravention of the fundamental policy of Indian law. The bench noted that DFCCI had not challenged the award on grounds of fraud or corruption or in contravention of the fundamental policy but the only contention which has been urged is that the tribunal erred in taking into account the rate of land in neighbouring villages for ascertaining the market value of the subject land.

Beyond Meat Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection: Why plant-based meat company is facing troubles
Beyond Meat is struggling to stay afloat. On August 10, reports confirmed that the company, known for making plant-based meat substitutes, has filed or is headed to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the law office of John T Orcutt, a North Carolina bankruptcy lawyer noted. Beyond Meat's products were meant to mimic the taste, texture, and cooking experience of animal-based meat.(Reuters) Beyond Meat's products were meant to mimic the taste, texture, and cooking experience of animal-based meat. Like Beyond Burger or Beyond Beef, their products too are made from proteins derives from plants, fats, and other ingredients that replicate the experience of having meat. The law office noted that the company's decline stems from fall in sales, mounting debt, and stiff competition, all the while having to deal with a reality that many still prefer eating meat. Why Beyond Meat is filing for bankruptcy protection Beyond Meat has reported a consistent decline in year-on-year revenue, due to a slowdown in the plant-based meat market, the lawyer's office noted. Its second quarter revenue fell by 20 percent, missing the Wall Street estimates by a wide margin. Meanwhile, for the quarter ending June 28, revenue dropped to around $75 million as compared to the anticipated $82 million. The offices of the lawyer further noted that refrigerated plant-based meat sales in the US are down 17.2 percent, while frozen alternatives have fallen 8.1 percent. The company also accrued over $1.2 billion in outstanding debt. Beyond Meat had only around $117 million in cash as of mid 2025. The bankruptcy lawyer noted that the bulk of this debt was from convertible bonds which were issued in 2021 and mature in 2027. Since the company's stock price has collapsed (down to less than 3 percent of its peak value), Beyond Meat is unable to convert its debt and needs to repay the principal in cash funds, which it does not have. This puts the company on the path to default. Notably, Beyond Meat has been in talks with bondholders to explore debt restructuring. Why Beyond Meat faced problems The lawyer's office posited that Beyond Meat faced issues due to the market getting crowded with competitors. Consumers are also shifting away from highly-processed plant-based alternatives to whole-food options like lentils or tofu. This shift in consumer preferences, combined with increased skepticism about processed foods, and scrutiny from nutritionists ended up hurting Beyond Meat's appeal, the lawyer's office stated. While Beyond Meat tried securing new financing and introducing reformulated products, the perfect storm of market conditions and consumer preferences led to a situation where even aggressive restructuring efforts were unable to bridge the widening gap.
