WATCH: City council holds special meeting on Birmingham Water Works

Yahoo08-05-2025

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — The Birmingham City Council is holding a special called meeting Thursday morning to 'take action related to the Birmingham Water Works Board.'
Control of the board and who gets to appoint members has become hotly contested following the drafting and passage of SB 330. The law, which Gov. Ivey signed Wednesday afternoon, takes the Birmingham Water Works Board mostly out of the city's hands and restructures it to include regional members appointed by both the state and surrounding counties. Additionally, the previous board would be dissolved and new members are to be appointed.
Hours after Ivey signed the bill, the Birmingham Water Works Board voted to sell the utility company to the city of Birmingham for $1 by a vote of 5-2.
In response to the water works board voting to sell, Phillip Wiedmeyer, a member of the newly formed Regional Water Works Board, filed a federal lawsuit against the city of Birmingham. Weidmeyer is asking for judge to invalidate all action taken by the Birmingham Water Works Board after SB 330 was signed and affirm that the new board is in full control.

Households issued date for arrival of new £200 cost of living payments

READ MORE: Nationwide issues alert over £200 payments going out to customers Get breaking news on BirminghamLive WhatsApp, click the link to join That means households living in the city will be able to make an application to receive the funding. It comes as the latest round of the government's Household Support Fund (HSF) opened on April 1. The pot of cash, which is delivered via the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), funds such schemes as the one by Birmingham City Council. The council previously had applications running for its hardship grants. But this closed in March, in line with the ending of the previous round of HSF funding. Birmingham City Council has three sets of criteria in order for households to be eligible for the payments. These are that applicants are a permanent resident, be able to demonstrate you're experiencing financial hardship and not have received a £200 payment in the past 12 months - see more here. Advising households on when applications will reopen, a spokesperson for the council scheme said: "Please be advised that enquiries will reopen in late June 2025. "If you are not currently on the waiting list, and it has now been 12 months since your household last received a grant payment, you will be able to submit a new enquiry once the scheme reopens in late June 2025."

Leaders in Alabama react to President Donald Trump's ‘Big, Beautiful Bill'

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — Leaders in Alabama have a lot to say on what President Donald Trump's 'Big, Beautiful Bill' could mean for the state. The bill features a tax cut on overtime and a cut in funding to Medicaid and SNAP programs. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) said he supports the bill, but he said it needs some changes in the Senate. 'The way to grow this country is to get the tax cuts done,' Tuberville said. 'And the tax cuts are in this bill. And we need to make them permanent, and there are a lot of things in there that are really, really good, and there's some things in there that are very questionable.' State Rep. Sam Jones (D-Mobile) said the whole bill is questionable. He said changes to Medicaid will have implications for healthcare in the state. 'There are people with intellectual disabilities, there are people who are- have serious, serious issues,' said Rep. Jones. 'And when they're not on Medicaid, they have no medical services at all.' The Cover Alabama Campaign advocates for those medical services. Debbie Smith, director of the campaign with Alabama Arise, said 170,000 Alabamians could lose healthcare with Medicaid changes. 2 additional suspects arrested, charged in Graysville fatal house fire 'It doesn't matter if you have Blue Cross Blue Shield, or some type of private insurance coverage,' Smith said of premiums. 'You aren't insulated from this bill. Everybody's gonna be impacted if this bill goes through.' That bill also influences education, allowing Pell Grants to be used for short-term workforce training programs, according to the White House. Gordon Stone, executive director of the Higher Education Partnership, said they are watching the bill closely. 'We're watching the Pell Grant. We're watching what it does to our graduate school programs and others, other student access points through the loan rewrite,' Stone said. 'There's a lot of things happening right now at the federal level that are important for all of our institutions.' The bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives and is now moving through the Senate. President Trump has said on social media that he wants to sign the bill into law as soon as possible.
