RCMP arrest Edmonton teen allegedly connected to online terrorism network

Toronto Star29-05-2025
EDMONTON - RCMP say they have arrested an Alberta teen because investigators believe the youth will commit terrorism offences.
Mounties allege a 15-year-old from Edmonton was planning to commit offences related to the COM/764.
They say it is a violent online network that lures youth and encourages them to commit sexual acts, self-harm and animal torture.

Investigators say they have commenced proceedings against the youth by way of a terrorism peace bond.
A peace bond allows investigators to monitor people who appear likely to commit a crime when there's no evidence of an actual offence.
The teen can't be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act and is set to appear in court next week.

Vigil to take place tonight for 8-year-old Toronto boy killed by stray bullet

TORONTO – A candlelight vigil will be held this evening for an eight-year-old Toronto boy killed by a stray bullet while he was in bed with his family last weekend. JahVai Roy, who has been described by friends and family as a curious boy and a fearless anti-bullying advocate, was killed in his North York home early Saturday morning. Toronto police said a stray bullet from a shooting outside entered the residence at around 12:30 a.m. Bullets also entered two other units, but no one else was injured. The vigil is set to take place at 5 p.m. near the apartment building where JahVai died, with several city officials, police inspectors and hundreds of community members expected to attend. A social media post promoting the vigil also asks attendees to wear blue, described as JahVai's favourite colour. The boy was laid to rest yesterday at a funeral held on Wikwemikong First Nation on Manitoulin Island. Marcell Wilson, a friend of the family, described JahVai as a 'genuinely good, happy, compassionate, kind, curious child,' who always made sure to look after his mom and his two siblings. 'He was the type of boy that wanted to climb a tree, or if there was a bird or something, he'd want to pick it up and touch it,' Wilson said in an interview Tuesday. 'He was fearless.' A GoFundMe page launched in response to the boy's death has also raised almost $75,000 to help the family with funeral expenses, relocation costs and trauma counselling. Coun. Frances Nunziata, who represents the neighbourhood where JahVai was killed, said she has been in touch with the family several times, and will be at the vigil alongside Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow. 'It's just crazy what's happening,' Nunziata said earlier this week. 'We're not even safe in our own homes.' Community advocates have said they hope the deadly shooting acts as a wake-up call to spark community and government action against gun violence. 'We don't want to see another JahVai Roy, ever. So let this be the last. And the only way this can be the last is that we all work together,' Wilson said. A rally against gun violence is also expected to take place tomorrow in front of Toronto City Hall. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 21, 2025.

Montreal teenager facing terrorism charges also accused of assaulting police officer

RCMP personnel remove items from an apartment during an active investigation, in Montreal on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. (Christopher Katsarov/The Canadian Press) A Montreal teenager accused of planning a terrorist attack on behalf of the Islamic State is facing new charges after the RCMP allege he assaulted a police officer following his arrest. The 17-year-old boy was in court Thursday morning to face three terrorism-related charges after he was arrested at his apartment in the city's Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood at about 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. About 40 police officers showed up at the home to oversee the arrest. The national police force alleges that the teen had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and had planned to acquire AK-47-style guns with the intention of carrying out a mass casualty attack in Montreal on behalf of the terrorist group. He appeared in youth court to face charges of providing, making available property or services for terrorist purposes, participation in activity of a terrorist group, and facilitating terrorist activity. Since he is a minor, his identity cannot be published under provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act. Federal Crown prosecutor Marc Cigana objected to his release on Thursday, and his case was adjourned to Monday, when the court is expected to set a date for a bail hearing. After the court appearance, Cigana told CTV News that if the accused is found guilty or pleads guilty, he intends to request a hearing to determine whether the youth should be subject to an adult sentence. Teen expected to face additional charges On Thursday, the RCMP confirmed to CTV News that it intends to lay new charges against the accused. Cpl. Erique Gasse, a spokesperson for the RCMP, said the teen allegedly assaulted an RCMP officer while putting handcuffs on him at headquarters in Westmount on Wednesday. Gasse did not have information about the extent of the officer's injuries. The proposed charges are assault with a weapon causing bodily harm, and assaulting a peace officer. As of noon, the charges had not been laid.
