Showmax celebrates Kabza De Small's Amapiano brilliance

The Citizen6 hours ago

Kabza said partnering with a local platform like Showmax helps ensure the story of Amapiano is told authentically.
Showmax is honouring Amapiano star Kabza De Small in a new tribute that highlights his role in turning a homegrown genre into a global sound.
The feature, narrated by Emmy-winning actress Thuso Mbedu, also spotlights other South African talents, including Grammy Award winner Tyla, visual artist Karabo Poppy, rising sprinter Bayanda Walaza, and designer Laduma Ngxokolo of MaXhosa Africa.
Widely regarded as one of the pioneers of Amapiano, Kabza began his journey in the townships with a laptop and a vision—producing beats that would go on to define a generation of South African music.
The Imithandazo hitmaker said international recognition has been humbling.
'Amapiano started as something raw and real, something we made in the heart of the kasi, not thinking it would one day be global.
'To now see people in different countries dancing, connecting, and even singing in our languages – it's emotional,' he said.
Kabza added that partnering with a local platform like Showmax helps ensure the story of Amapiano is told authentically.
'When we work with platforms that understand our culture, our slang, our vibes, the story becomes more authentic.
'Showmax is showcasing our stories and preserving the spirit of how it started and who it belongs to. That kind of support allows us to be real, to honour our people, and to make sure our legacy is told from our perspective – not filtered through a lens that doesn't know our streets.'

Kabza on staying original and grounded
Kabza said staying grounded in his South African identity is essential, even as his global success grows.
'No matter where I go, I carry Mzansi with me – in the beat, in the groove, in how I dress, even how I move on stage.'
He emphasised that Amapiano is more than just music, and if the world wants to embrace it, it must respect its origins and what it stands for.
'It's a story. A South African story. It's about our joy. If people just hear the music and don't understand the culture, they miss the heart of it. The soul of Amapiano is in the people who created it from nothing.'
Kabza and his longtime collaborator DJ Maphorisa are currently preparing for a major live show under their Scorpion Kings banner. The show will be held at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on Friday, 29 August.

How an American husband mastered making pap for his South African wife

Wife doesn't believe that her American husband made the pap. Image: Screenshot / TikTok Pap might be a staple in South African homes, but mastering the dish is no easy feat, especially for someone who's never made it before. One American man, married to a South African woman, decided to impress his wife by preparing pap for dinner. Admitting he had no clue how to make the beloved dish, he cleverly opted to use an automatic pap maker, which had just arrived that day. Using the device, which resembles a pressure cooker, he simply added the ingredients, and within 25 minutes, the pap was ready. When his wife came home from the gym, he eagerly presented his homemade meal. But instead of being immediately impressed, she was shocked. 'Who made pap?' she asked, clearly suspicious. Unable to believe her husband had pulled it off, she questioned him repeatedly. 'Be honest, who came here and made pap today?' she asked him and their young son, convinced there was another cook involved. Even after tasting the pap and noting that it wasn't even burnt, she kept pressing. 'Did you watch a tutorial?' she asked, shocked by how well it turned out. Eventually, he confessed that he used an automatic pap maker. Video Player is loading. The Logan Family, who share snippets of their multicultural life with over one million followers on TikTok, quickly went viral with the post, which racked up nearly three million views. While the high-tech pap maker intrigued some viewers, it was her hilarious reaction that stole the show. One fan joked, 'We're not eating another person's pap when we're the housewife. Who came here?' Another added, 'Bro had no idea he was having a near-death experience. 'Who made pap, who came here?'' Someone else chimed in saying: 'LOL. She thought you were cheating with someone who knows how to make pap!'

DJ Doowap to turn Paris Fashion Week into a South African soundstage

Renowned not just for her infectious beats but also as a champion of the South African sound, DJ Doowap's performance underlines her commitment to sharing her country's music with a global audience. Image: Supplied South African DJ and cultural tastemaker Khetsiwe Morgan, popularly known as DJ Doowap, is gearing up to make waves at this year's Paris Fashion Week on Thursday, June 26. Renowned not just for her infectious beats but also as a champion of the South African sound, Doowap's performance underlines her commitment to sharing her country's music with a global audience. This marks her seventh appearance at this prestigious event, and anticipation is palpable. Speaking to "Independent Media Lifestyle", Doowap reflected on her excitement for the upcoming event, stating, 'Every time it feels amazing. I love the energy around Fashion Week." "There are so many South Africans participating this year, doing pop-ups, and throwing events. It's a fantastic way to connect with individuals from all around the world who share my passion for fashion.' This year, Doowap will perform at the highly anticipated Jerk and Jollof event, a culinary and cultural experience renowned for showcasing Afro-Caribbean vibes across the globe. 'I think it's going to be insane. I've got a dope set ready for them - it's going to be a mix of Amapiano, Bacardi and some Gqom with a lot of dancing and high energy,' she added. 'Music and fashion are both great forms of expression. They share a kind of reflection of what individuals feel inside and how they want to present themselves to the world. The music definitely brings a designer's vision to life and deepens the audience's connection to the show,' she shared passionately. In terms of style, Doowap is pulling out all the stops. She has curated spectacular pieces from South African designer Nao Serati, which include eye-catching two-piece outfits. Alongside these, she plans to showcase her local flair with traditional pantsula vibes, bringing a mix of urban streetwear into the high-fashion context of Paris. 'I'm always searching for unique fashion pieces; I even work with my seamstress to create custom outfits because I'm not one for mall shopping,' she explained. For Doowap, this performance represents an essential milestone in her long career as a DJ. 'I've been DJing for over a decade, and every chance to perform internationally is a blessing. Each time I return to Paris, the excitement and the stages grow larger,' she remarked. Following her previous remarkable performances at global events like the Berlin Carnival and AfroPunk in New York, she is elated to witness the love and reception for South African music worldwide. Her enforced global presence comes on the heels of her latest single, 'Seroba Ke Seh' - a bold, high-energy song that encapsulates the royal spirit of Bacardi while tapping into the rhythm and slang of Pretoria. The track, co-produced by legendary producer Enny Man Da Guitar, has been met with exuberant responses both domestically and abroad, further signalling the international appetite for South African sounds. 'Everybody wants to see what South Africa is doing right now; they're loving our vibe. And when I play 'Seroba Ke Seh', it sets the mood for joy,' Doowap enthused about the track, which she eagerly anticipates will find further success as it travels the globe. Currently, on a whirlwind European tour, Doowap's upcoming performance at Paris Fashion Week is more than just a gig; it's a cultural moment that showcases the growing influence of African youth culture through both music and fashion. As she continues to immerse herself in this vibrant creative landscape, she remains a beacon of the high-energy genre she champions, solidifying her position as a true global ambassador of South African sound.

Hollywoodbets Durban July: Jockeys confirmed

The list of jockeys for the 130th renewal of the Hollywoodbets Durban July to be run on Saturday, 5 July has been confirmed. Image: Cape Racing The all-important list of jockeys for the 130th renewal of the Hollywoodbets Durban July to be run at Hollywoodbets Greyville on Saturday, 5 July has been confirmed. ADVERTISEMENT The Grade 1 race over 2 200m will go off at 16:00. JP van der Merwe will return to ride defending champion Oriental Charm for James Crawford. Meanwhile, champion South African jockey Richard Fourie will be aboard Eight On Eighteen for trainer Justin Snaith and owners Nick Jonsson and Johann Rupert. Fourie is gunning for a fourth Hollywoodbets Durban July title having previously won aboard Belgarion (2020), Do It Again (2019) and Legislate (2014). ADVERTISEMENT Other previous winners of the race who will ride in this year's race include Gavin Lerena (Madison Valley), S'manga Khumalo (On My Honour) and Kabelo Matsunyane (Purple Pitcher). RELATED | Every previous Hollywoodbets Durban July winner since 1897 Horse Jockey Eight on Eighteen (11) Richard Fourie Oriental Charm (1) JP van der Merwe Immediate Edge (10) Callan Murray See It Again (15) Raymond Danielson The Real Prince (5) Craig Zackey Gladatorian (16) Sean Veale Selukwe (6) Serino Moodley Royal Victory (17) Muzi Yeni Okavango (13) Andrew Fortune Atticus Finch (4) Calvin Habib Confederate (14) Warren Kennedy Native Ruler (18) Tristan Godden Madison Valley (2) Gavin Lerena My Best Shot (9) Chase Maujean On My Honour (3) S'manga Khumalo Purple Pitcher (12) Kableo Matsunyane Pomodoro's Jet (8) Athandiwe Mgudlwa Rainbow Lorikeet (7) Diego de Gouveia Reserve runners Litigation (19) Reserve 1 Son Of Raj (20) Reserve 2 NOTE: Barrier draw in brackets Final field revealed There was a collective sigh of relief within the gathered crowd in the Hollywoodbets Greyville parade ring when the name of Eight On Eighteen was read out by Graeme Hawkins as being among the 18 runners for the R5 million Hollywoodbets Durban July on Saturday, 5 July. Trainer Justin Snaith was always cagey about whether his star colt would take his place in the line-up, given that he would carry top weight for a three-year-old of 57kg – the highest since Abashiri lumped 59kg into 13th place behind The Conglomerate in 2016. But Snaith and owners Nick Jonsson and Johann Rupert have taken the plunge and Eight On Eighteen will make history should he win and become the first three-year-old in history to win the Grade 1 WSB Cape Town Met and the Grade 1 Hollywoodbets Durban July in the same year Eight On Eighteen is also likely to start one of the shortest priced favourites in the 129-year history of the race and his chances were further enhanced when he was drawn 11 in the 18-horse field. 'Would be an emotional win' James Crawford has two runners in the race, last year's winner Oriental Charm who drew pole position, and Pomodoro's Jet who drew eight. It would be an emotional win for James Crawford, who recently took over his father's string with Brett now plying his trade in Hong Kong. See It Again races in the same Nick Jonsson silks as Eight On Eighteen and has his third attempt after finishing second to Winchester Mansion two years back and an unlucky fifth last year behind Oriental Charm. He pulled a wide draw of 15. Stuart Ferrie sends out his first July runner in the hard-knocking Gladatorian. A fast-finishing third behind Dave The King and Oriental Charm in the Gold Challenge, he also drew a wide gate of 16. Dean Kannemeyer knows what it takes to train a July winner, successful with Dynasty, Eyeofthetiger and Power King, and The Real Prince drew gate five. Royal Victory will have his supporters but Nathan Kotzen's charge drew deep at 17. However, he is a winner of the Grade 1 Betway Summer Cup and the Grade 1 Champion Challenge at Turffontein and finished third in the July last year behind Oriental Charm. Fabian Habib has his first July runner in Confederate. Relatively lightly raced, the gelding has won four of his nine starts but has never finishing further back than second. He won the Grade 1 SA Classic, beating subsequent Grade 1 Champions Challenge winner Fire Attack, and will be ridden by two-time South African and current New Zealand champion jockey Warren Kennedy who has made the trip to ride in the race. He drew gate 14. 'Stellar record' Mike de Kock has a stellar record in this race and has joined forces with his son Mathew. They have their first July runner together in the three-year-old and recent Grade 3 Jubilee Stakes winner Immediate Edge. He carries bottom weight for a three-year-old male of 53kg and has won four of his six starts to date. He drew alongside Eight On Eighteen in gate 10. Snaith has two other runners in the race, namely Okavango and the one-time winner Native Ruler. Okavango will be ridden by Andrew Fortune and drew 13 while Tristan Godden will have to navigate Native Ruler from gate 18. Alec Laird and jockey Calvin Habib pin their hopes on Grade 1 Betway Summer Cup winner Atticus Finch who drew favourably in four. Andre Nel was first up to do the draw for Selukwe and came out with gate six. Serino Moodley will be doing the honours on Selukwe. Alan Greeff will fly the colours for the Eastern Cape with his star performer My Best Shot who has a midfield draw of nine. Local owner Sid Moodley has his first July runner in Madison Valley and he drew gate two for his trainer Frank Robinson. Rainbow Lorikeet is the only filly in the race and Candice Bass Robinson's runner drew well in seven and will have Diego de Gouveia aboard. Have you ever attended the Hollywoodbets Durban July?
