
Matrix NI focuses on the future
Robert Hill, Chair of Matrix NI, has highlighted the crucial role the Northern Ireland Science Industry Panel plays in advising government, and informing academia and industry, to realise the potential of Northern Ireland as a global science and technology leader.
Robert Hill states: 'My role is to convene those who have expertise and a passion for their sector but also to bring these elements together with a coherent voice for the Northern Ireland Science & Technology community'.
Matrix panel members have wide sectoral representation including Advanced Manufacturing, Health and Life Sciences, Digital Technology. Wireless Networks and Cybersecurity. Matrix has just launched the 'Future Focus' video series featuring 16 of its panel members, profiling their sector of business activity and expertise, with a view to the future, informed by Matrix report findings.
A key output of Matrix is the research reports in the form of foresight studies, which provide analysis and recommendations, to assist the Department for the Economy (DfE) to build the evidence base for future science and Research & Development policies within a wider innovation policy framework.
Mr Hill commented: 'The foresight studies produced through the panel of our industry experts, explore the emerging technologies and market growth, assessing the potential across sectors for investment and policy support. We need to share and learn from the successes of our local companies and take forward the recommendations from Matrix sectoral reports, to have the agility to garner these evolving opportunities.'
Mr Hill added: 'The wide-ranging reports have recently covered areas including AI, Regulatory Technology, Advanced Wireless Networks, Life and Health Sciences and the Space Sector. The next report is due to launch June 18th on the theme of a 'sustainable built NI environment'. It will explore how to address the challenges of the decarbonisation of our homes, workplaces, and the infrastructure that binds our communities'.
Robert Hill is also the manager for the Northern Ireland Space Cluster and Director of the Northern Ireland Space Office, and Mr Hill commented further: 'Northern Ireland has a rich heritage when it comes to science, industry and technology, from the linen trade, shipbuilding and then into aerospace. If we fast forward to 2025, as an example, there is a family-owned business located in Portadown known for precision springs, called Springco which has supplied its components to reach Mars aboard space missions—just one example of how local companies can make a global impact'.
Mr Hill added as an example of technology application: 'One standout initiative using technology to address an environmental issue includes using satellite data to monitor Lough Neagh, a critical water source for 40% of Northern Ireland's population. In partnership with the UK Space Agency, local companies are working on early detection, monitoring and the prediction of harmful algal blooms—showcasing how space technology can directly benefit communities'.
Mr Hill concluded "Our region's size enables deep collaboration across industry, academia, and government. Matrix is proud to help channel this collaboration into clear strategic priorities for growth and leveraging through links with the City Growth Deals (DfE). I look forward to the innovation and improved commercialisation potential as our key sectors continue to adapt, grow and rise to the challenge."

Welsh Talent Selected for Specialist London Design Exhibition
George & Jane Johns Directors of Audrey Johns Inspect Fabric With Alice Smith Sgrin House Designer – Neyland Pembrokeshire Dale-based Sgrinhouse has been selected to bring maritime-inspired fabric designs to its first major exhibition this autumn. Sgrinhouse, headed up by Alice Smith, will be bringing her own coastal-inspired, hand designed and hand printed work to the design exhibition Focus/25 On Design at Design Centre in Chelsea between 15 September and 16 October 2025. Alice gained a first class degree in Textile Design from Central Saint Martins in 2020. Alice said: 'The opportunity and platform to showcase my flair and skill to the world's top interior designers at 'Focus/25 On Design' feels well-deserved and exciting. It is Sgrinhouse's first major showcase and I know that my Welsh, marine-inspired showcase will be well received by the visiting interior designers who are seeking out new talent and unique designs for their clients. Visitors will see my avant-garde art combined with functionality on chairs, curtains, blinds and lampshades showcasing the fabrics' flexibility and useability.' Selected as one of 20+ pop-up House Guests, Alice's display features a fishing net structure – reflecting her coastal upbringing and inspiration – with her geometric patterns which are hand designed and printed in her own textile studio in coastal Dale. Neyland-based luxury soft furnishings manufacturer, Audrey Johns Ltd, is supporting Alice. Director George Johns said: 'We aim to nurture young, local talent by developing Alice's skills in our bespoke soft furnishings business. We are proudly bringing a touch of West Wales to Chelsea by incorporating Sgrinhouse's unique designs and luxury fabrics on our soft furnishings hand made in Neyland. Currently working as our fabric cutter, Alice has the potential to evolve into a fabric designer, and our support will help her advance her passion and skills.' Using only high quality, sustainable 100% linen woven in Ireland for her work, as well as using less toxic chemicals, Alice is very aware of what she puts down the drains in her seaside studio. 'Sgrinhouse aims to bring craft and modernity together in order to create beautiful, durable and timeless fabrics that do not put a burden on the environment or on people', she said. A pop up exhibition of Sgrinhouse's display will be available for all to visit at Audrey Johns Showroom in Neyland from Saturday 1 – Friday 14 November 2025.

Samourai Wallet founders face prison after guilty plea

Keonne Rodriguez and William, co-founders of the Samourai Wallet coin mixing platform, have pleaded guilty in a United States federal court to charges of operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. They did not plead guilty to several other charges against them, including money laundering. In April 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) accused Samourai Wallet of facilitating over $2 billion in illegal transactions and laundering more than $100 million in criminal proceeds through its mixing services. At the time, Samourai's co-developers, Rodriguez and Hill, pleaded not guilty to charges of money laundering, conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business, wire fraud, and computer fraud. However, court documents filed Tuesday in the Southern District of New York indicated that CEO Rodriguez and Chief Technology Officer Hill intended to change their pleas. Sure enough, during a Wednesday morning hearing before Judge Denise Cote, the pair pleaded guilty to the second charge in their indictment, conspiracy to operate an unlicensed money transmitting business. Rodriguez and Hill will be sentenced in November and face a maximum prison sentence of five years and a $250,000 fine each. They will also still have to contest the other charges, and if convicted on all counts, could be looking at up to 25 years in prison. Samourai Wallet case On April 24, 2024, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York announced the arrests of Rodriguez and Hill over their involvement in the development and operation of the Samourai Wallet mixer. The indictment alleged Samourai 'executed over $2 billion in unlawful transactions' due to its lack of a money transmitting license as well as its founders' 'deliberate failure to implement' anti-money laundering (AML) and know your customer (KYC) protocols. Samourai was also accused of facilitating 'more than $100 million in money laundering transactions from illegal dark web markets, such as Silk Road and Hydra Market.' Rodriguez was arrested in the U.S., while Hill was detained in Portugal and later extradited stateside. This was followed by the platform's dot-com domains being seized and Google Play halting downloads of the Samourai app for U.S. users. Meanwhile, with the help of law enforcement agencies in Iceland, Samourai's servers were also seized. Unlike many coin mixers based on the Ethereum blockchain, Samourai was set up to obfuscate the digital trail of BTC tokens and to keep users' 'identity masked.' Samourai also offered a feature called Ricochet, which added 'extra hops of history to your transaction' and allowed customers to '[s]tump the blacklists and help guard against unjust 3rd party account closures.' The DOJ claimed such features were actively marketed to criminals and, in one of Rodriguez's court hearings, Judge Cote noted a tweet from Samourai's X account that read 'Welcome new Russian oligarch Samourai Wallet users.' Other than their ill-advised flaunting of the platforms' legal grey areas, along with seemingly leaning in to the mixer's appeal to questionable groups and individuals—on which a judge and jury is unlikely to look favorably—Rodriguez and Hill's chances of a positive outcome in their federal case took a further hit in March 2024, with the conviction of Roman Sterlingov. Sterlingov, the Swedish-Russian operator of the Bitcoin Fog mixer, was convicted in a U.S. court on similar charges to those leveled against the Samourai duo, namely money laundering, operating an unlicensed money transmitting business, and violating the District of Columbia Money Transmitters Act. At the time, U.S. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco said Sterlingov 'thought he could use the shadows of the internet to launder hundreds of millions of dollars in [BTC] without getting caught. But he was wrong… no matter where you operate, if your cryptocurrency service reaches the United States, you must abide by U.S. law.' Parallels with the Samourai case can also be found in the trial of the Tornado Cash mixer co-founder, Roman Storm, which wrapped up this week. The 34-year-old Russian expat is currently awaiting a verdict on charges of money laundering and facilitating sanctions violations. With Sterlingov's conviction and guilty pleas now lodged for Rodriguez and Hill for unlicensed money transmitting, if Storm is also found guilty, these cases together will establish a pattern and significant precedent for how privacy-preserving platforms and the open-source developers behind non-custodial software are treated under U.S. law.
