MMA Junkie's Fight of the Month for July: No snub for a UFC 318 banger
With another action-packed month of MMA in the books, MMA Junkie looks at the best fights from July 2025: Here are the five nominees, listed in chronological order, and winner of MMA Junkie's Fight of the Month award for July. At the bottom of the post, let us know if we got it right by voting on your choice. Nominee: Morgan Charriere def. Nate Landwehr at UFC on ESPN 70 Morgan Charriere spoiled Nate Landwehr's homecoming with a big knockout of Nate Landwehr in their featherweight bout. Charriere (21-11-1 MMA, 3-2 UFC) stunned the Nashville crowd with a finishing barrage of the hometown fighter Landwehr (18-7 MMA, 5-5 UFC). When the third round, it didn't take long for him to unload a barrage of strikes that led to the finish. Nominee: Costello van Steenis def. Johnny Eblen at PFL Africa If he does nothing else, Costello van Steenis will always be remembered for his insane comeback against Johnny Eblen to claim the PFL middleweight title. Not only did he claim the belt, van Steenis (17-3) did so in improbable fashion when he rallied and submitted Eblen (16-1) with nine seconds left in their five-round bout. The stoppage came at 4:51 of Round 5 for arguably the most stunning result in PFL history. Nominee: Max Holloway def. Dustin Poirier at UFC 318 Max Holloway finally got his get-back against Dustin Poirier when he emerged victorious from their trilogy bout and sent "The Diamond" into retirement on an L. After losing to Poirier (30-10 MMA, 22-9 UFC) by submission in 2012 and decision in 2019, Holloway (27-8 MMA, 23-8 UFC) made the most of his last chance in New Orleans when he scored a unanimous decision win to successfully defend the BMF title and split the retirement moment of Poirier. Nominee: Steven Nguyen def. Mohammad Yahya at UFC on ABC 9 Steven Nguyen made history – at the expense of Mohammad Yahya's face – in their featherweight bout Nguyen (10-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) dropped Yahya (12-5 MMA, 0-2 UFC) a record-breaking six times. The fight was stopped between Round 2 and Round 3 due to Yahya's grotesquely swollen eye. The winner: Daniel Rodriguez def. Kevin Holland at UFC 318 It was a fight UFC matchmakers had tried to make multiple times prior and when it finally came to fruition, it proved worth the wait. Daniel Rodriguez and Kevin Holland came to blows at UFC 318 and fans were treated to an all-time-wild brawl. When the dust settled, Rodriguez (20-5 MMA, 10-4 UFC) was named winner by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28). As the fight progressed, the craziness increased. Rodriguez had a strong first round, but peaked in Round 2 when he froze and dropped Holland (28-14 MMA, 15-11 UFC) with a combination. Holland somehow survived and scored a beautifully-timed takedown midway through the round. In Round 3, Holland stunned Rodriguez multiple times. Uppercuts were his biggest weapons, which totally flashed Rodriguez twice. Although the referee he was close to intervening, he did not. Rodriguez was allowed to fight on and for good reason. He scored a takedown on Holland and entered mount. Rodriguez, 38, has won three fights in a row. He entered UFC 318 off back-to-back wins over Alex Morono and Santiago Ponzinibbio. Cast Your Vote! Sad encounter on empty beach highlights growing threat: 'I thought it was dead'
A woman's 'chance' encounter on a remote beach has highlighted a deadly issue plaguing Australia's coastlines. Genevieve Bale was enjoying a day off from work on Monday when she decided to take her dog for a walk along a virtually empty beach in Peterborough, roughly three hours west of Melbourne, and collect any rubbish or marine debris she spotted along the way. After wandering along the sand, the Beach Patrol volunteer was preparing to leave when she 'got the shock of her life'. 'I'd walked the stretch of the beach and it had no one on it… just as I was leaving the beach I happened to look in that direction and saw the seal,' she told Yahoo News, noting the creature had nestled itself far away from the water, near the sand dunes. 'At first I thought it was dead, but then I realised it was alive and noticed the fishing rope around it.' Shocking photos show an abandoned trawler net — otherwise referred to as a ghost net — wrapped tightly around the juvenile fur seal's neck, with 'metres of heavy line trailing behind'. While the animal appears to be larger in images, it was only the size of a 'biggish Jack Russell dog', Genevieve said. 'It cried as I approached it. It was definitely distressed because it kept moving its back flipper like it was trying to just get this thing off,' she continued, adding that the seal also looked 'quite thin'. Concerned for its welfare, the volunteer tied her dog to a tree several metres away and contacted another Beach Patrol leader, who then reached out to Zoos Victoria's Marine Response Unit for help. As they embarked on the long drive west, members of the Eastern Maar Aboriginal Corporation arrived to keep an eye on the seal and make sure it didn't head back into the water. Thankfully, zoo staff were able to untangle the animal, which didn't appear to have any serious injuries. Tangled seal a 'stark reminder', volunteer says Genevieve said it was 'lucky' that she spotted the seal as she only visits the remote beach about once a year. 'It was a stark reminder of why beach cleaners do what they do,' she told Yahoo. Since she started volunteering about eight years ago, the Victorian said she has noticed an abundance of discarded rope and marine debris washing up on our shores. 'We collect ropes and nets off beaches every week to prevent this kind of thing — but seeing it happen right in front of you hits hard.' Since 2018, volunteers for Beach Patrol's regional offshoot in Warrnambool have collected a total of 72,682 ropes and nets. So far this year, they have recorded 9,055 fishing items — mainly rope and dumped line — and just over 2,000kg of rubbish. 'There is so much rope out there. It's so harmful… this little guy, how many do you not find that are ending up like this?' Genevieve said. 📸 Detail in beach photo proves $17 billion Aussie issue is 'getting worse' 🚮 Aussie state rolls out new bins to help tackle deadly issue 🏝️ Never before seen photos of six-tonne find on coast exposes growing crisis Ghost nets wreak havoc on Aussie coastline Ghost fishing nets — abandoned, lost or discarded fishing nets that can drift for years — and marine debris are a big issue across Australia. They wreak havoc on marine life, trapping and killing turtles, dolphins and other creatures, as well as silently destroying fragile ecosystems. Scientists working to help curb the problem in the Northern Territory previously told Yahoo they've discovered ghost nets roughly every kilometre in the region, tangled in rocks, buried in sand or lodged in mangroves. Lynx hang on to beat Liberty in WNBA Finals rematch as star Breanna Stewart is ruled out indefinitely
New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart will be sidelined indefinitely due to a bone bruise in her right knee, coach Sandy Brondello confirmed Wednesday. While the specifics of her injury are now known, it's unclear how long she'll be sidelined. Brondello did not have a timeline for Stewart's return, and the Liberty star was not available for the team's matchup with the Minnesota Lynx on Wednesday. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] "We want to be smart with it," Brondello said before the game, via ESPN. "If we can get her back at the end of August, I think that's great. It's big-picture ... so when she's ready. But keep it fresh for the playoffs. I know she'll be back before then. How early she gets back before the end of the [regular] season, I don't know.' Stewart went down in the opening minutes of the Liberty's matchup with the Los Angeles Sparks on Saturday. She awkwardly pulled up and started walking around with the apparent non-contact injury. She made an immediate call to come out of the game and was ruled out at halftime. She hasn't played since. For a long time, the nature of Stewart's injury was unclear. Initial imaging revealed the absence of a significant injury, which was a good sign. But Brondello said Monday that the team didn't actually know what part of Stewart's leg was hurt. While there still isn't a timetable for her return, knowing the nature of the injury is a step in the right direction. Stewart is averaging 18.3 points and 6.5 rebounds this season. The two-time league MVP hadn't missed a game all year before this injury. Lynx win WNBA Finals rematch Without Stewart available, the Liberty simply couldn't keep up with the Lynx on Wednesday night in Minneapolis. The Lynx held on late to grab a 100-93 win to keep their lead in the league standings and improve to an incredible 15-1 on their home floor. They are now a perfect 5-0 following a loss this season, too. After ending the first quarter all tied up, the Lynx closed the first half on a quick 7-0 burst to take a nine-point lead into the break. Star Napheesa Collier put up 19 points in the first 20 minutes alone, too, after shooting 7-of-10 from the field. Though the Liberty kept it within single digits entering the final period, the Lynx opened the fourth quarter on an 8-3 burst to take control of the game right back. While the Liberty rattled off a huge 11-0 run of their own over a nearly two-minute span late in the quarter, which cut the game back to just four points, Collier sealed the win and responded perfectly. She drove straight to the rim and converted a tough and-one layup to end their dry spell and seal the seven-point win. Sabrina Ionescu led the Liberty with 31 points, 12 of which came in the fourth quarter, and four rebounds in the loss. Isabelle Harrison added 15 points off the bench, and Marine Johannes finished with 14 points. The Liberty still hold the second best record in the league behind the Lynx, though they sit at 17-9 on the year and have now lost three straight — which is their longest losing skid of the season and their first such losing streak since the 2022 season. Collier finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Lynx. It was her fifth 30-point night of the season, which is tied for the most in the league, and her second-straight. Kayla McBride added 24 points, and Alanna Smith finished with 12 points. They shot 15-of-31 from behind the arc as a group, too. The win pushed the Lynx to 23-5 on the season. While Stewart missed this contest, the two teams will square off in three straight games in mid-August. As long as she's able to make it back on the court by then, starting with the first matchup on Aug. 10, the mini series between last year's two WNBA Finals teams should be incredibly entertaining.
