Pune tourists continue Kashmir expedition unfazed after narrowly missing Pahalgam attack

Indian Express25-04-2025

Amid the rush to leave Kashmir following the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, many tourists have defied fear and decided to stay back and continue their planned tour, which also includes several families from Pune. The presence of the Indian Armed Forces across Jammu and Kashmir, cooperation from local residents, and administrative efforts to maintain the law and order situation have helped tourist activities thrive again and tourists to feel protected.
'We arrived in Srinagar on April 21, and the Pahalgam visit was scheduled the next day. Fortunately, while enjoying a Shikara ride on Dal Lake, we got late and reached the Baisaran meadows at around 3 pm, when the terror attack had just happened. We saw people rushing and decided to leave the site while we were about to book the pony ride,' said Yashwant Ranaware, a resident of Aundh.
Ranaware and his wife were accompanied by the Awasare family, who returned to Srinagar the next day when private vehicle movement was allowed. After the attack, security personnel from various forces such as the Indian Army, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and others were commissioned to carry out combing operations to track down the terrorists.
While staying for two days in Srinagar, both families decided to let the situation get under control and then continue with the trip. 'We thought, why panic if the Armed Forces have launched their operations. And on Thursday, we headed to Gulmarg and enjoyed the Gondola ride and later went to Sonmarg. The same is the case with many other tourists as they have started enjoying again without fear,' added Ranaware.
Satish Awasare, a resident a Pune, told The Indian Express that the decision to continue with the tourism activities was possible because of the safe environment created by the Indian Armed Forces, prompt action by the local administration to get life back to normal while maintaining law and order despite the Red Alert in Kashmir, and the courteous residents who had helped us with accomodation, food and other essentials.
Currently, the situation is completely normal, and many tourists have been seen flocking to the tourist spots. 'I believe if we panic and avoid visiting Jammu and Kashmir, keeping in mind the threat, then we are losing the opportunity to enjoy the scenic locations, and this has a direct impact on the valley's economy, which is mostly dependent on tourism. After enjoying the remaining locations, we will be back in Pune next week,' added Awasare.

Multi-tier security set up in J&K ahead of PM Modi's visit on June 6

A multi-tier security setup has been put in place for Prme Minister Naredra Modi's visit to Jammu and Kashmir on Friday to inaugurate the much-awaited Kashmir rail link and also dedicate to the nation multiple development projects worth over Rs 46,000 crore in Katra, officials said. This will be the first visit of Modi to the Union Territory post Operation Sindoor launched by the Indian Armed Forces in retaliation to the Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 persons, mostly tourists, dead on April 22. Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Chenab bridge and India's first cable-stayed Anji bridge, the symbol of India's engineering excellence before flagging off Vande Bharat trains to mark the completion of the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link (USBRL) that will provide direct train connectivity to the valley. Modi will also lay the foundation stone, inaugurate and dedicate to the nation multiple development projects worth over Rs 46,000 crore at Katra, the base camp for pilgrims visiting the Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta hills in Reasi district. The 272 km long USBRL project, constructed at a cost of around Rs 43,780 crore includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of the country aiming to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration. Prime Minister Modi will also flag off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra to Srinagar and back. They will offer a swift, comfortable, and reliable travel option for residents, tourists, pilgrims among others. In a major boost to last mile connectivity especially in border areas, Modi will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various road projects. He will lay the foundation stone of road widening project from Rafiabad to Kupwara on National Highway-701 and the construction of Shopian bypass road on NH-444 worth over Rs 1,952 crore. He will also inaugurate two flyover projects at Sangrama Junction on National Highway-1 in Srinagar and at Bemina Junction on National Highway-44. These projects will ease traffic congestion and enhance traffic flow for the commuters. Prime Minister Modi will also lay the foundation stone of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra worth over Rs 350 crore. It will be the first medical college in Reasi district contributing substantially to the healthcare infrastructure in the region. Out of the total 272 km USBRL project, 209 km was commissioned in phases with the first phase of the 118 km Qazigund-Baramulla section commissioned in October 2009 followed by 18 km Banihal-Qazigund in June 2013, 25 km Udhampur-Katra in July 2014 and 48.1 km long Banihal-Sangaldan stretch in February, last year. The work on the 46-km Sangaldan-Reasi section was also completed in June last year, leaving a total 17 km stretch between Reasi and Katra and this section was finally completed in December 2024. Officials said a high security alert has been sounded across Jammu and Kashmir in view of the Prime Minister's visit with senior police, paramilitary officers, army and intelligence officers personally monitoring the situation. Heavy security deployments have been made in and around the venues with latest gadgets, including drones deployed to keep a close vigil, the officials said, adding the security grid on the borders and the hinterland has been further beefed up to check infiltration and movement of anti-national and subversive elements. The area domination and raids on the houses of suspected persons including Over Ground Workers and relatives of terrorists operating from across the border have also been intensified as part of the security arrangements, the officials said. During a visit to border areas on Wednesday, Deputy Inspector General of Police, Jammu-Kathua-Samba range, Shiv Kumar directed the officers on the ground to remain vigilant. The officials said several roads heading towards Katra Stadium, the venue of Modi's public rally, may be shut or there may be traffic diversions on Friday. 34 tourists, family members of army personnel airlifted from Sikkim's landslide hit Chaten

Altogether 34 people – 27 tourists and seven family members of the army personnel - were evacuated from landslide-affected Chaten area in north Sikkim on Tuesday, officials said. This was the first successful aerial evacuation carried out under the current emergency response plan in the state where inclement weather condition continues. "Two MI-17 V5 helicopters successfully airlifted 34 stranded individuals from Chaten to Pakyong Greenfield Airport. Among those rescued were seven family members of Army personnel and 27 tourists. The injured personnel were also onboard and are currently receiving necessary medical treatment," an official said. Three army personnel were killed and six soldiers went missing after a landslide hit a military camp at Chaten. Several others were also injured. The landslide, which occurred at 7 pm on Sunday near Lachen town in Mangan district, was triggered by heavy rainfall in the area. Search and rescue operations to find out six missing army personnel are continuing on Tuesday as a team of 23 NDRF personnel, equipped with satellite phones and essential relief equipment, reached Chaten, officials added. The NDRF has begun reconnaissance of alternate transhipment routes and is coordinating with the Indian Army for sustained support. The Army's 112nd Brigade has established a vital foot route between Lachen and Chaten enabling the possibility of phased ground movement in areas currently inaccessible by road. The state government has outlined a strategic evacuation plan whereby tourists from Lachen will be moved to Chaten via the foot route and subsequently airlifted, depending on weather conditions, officials said. However, persistent inclement weather, including heavy rainfall in Chaten, prevented any further helicopter sorties. Due to this, teams from the state administration, which were scheduled to be airlifted to Chaten during the day, will now be deployed on Wednesday to bolster relief operations on the ground. Senior officials are monitoring the evolving situation, coordinating inter-agency operations and facilitating the rapid deployment of personnel, aid, and communication infrastructure to the impacted region. Meanwhile, the state government has officially declared the situation a natural disaster, prompting an urgent and coordinated multi-agency response. Chief Secretary R Telang is leading a team which is working in close coordination with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA) and Indian Army to help stranded civilians and restore critical access to the affected areas of Chaten and Lachen in Mangan district.
